You'll Laugh at my stupidity... but don't worry so am I!!

  Top of Page

Ok so Wednesday night I managed to humiliate myself, look like an idiot, require a tow truck and have my first RBT since obtaining my license (Y).

Quite simply. I put my car into a ditch.

Ok so the story goes as follows. Had just gone down to buy a packet of cigarettes with my mate and his brother in the car. I was driving obviously. Anyways's we'd just about arrived back at his house when they mentioned to me this little side alley-way type thing that was basically a dirt road leading down to a little opening near a creek. A scenic spot I guess you'd say it was.

So basically I parked my car, we all jumped out and had a couple of Benson's. Stood around, spoke some **** for a bit and then decided to leave cos it was getting close to midnight.

As I was going to reverse out, I realized I had no **** show in hell of being able to pull it off due to the lack of light. So I rather foolishly attempted to do a multi-point turn and face the way we drove in so I'd have my headlights to guide me. So I reversed, carefully creeped up to the edge til my mates brother told me to stop, whacked it in first and turned and went forwards.

However, due to the recent rain, the ground was rather muddy and crumbly, and my tyres went a bit too close to the edge and then before I knew it, was stuck down on a 45 degree angle in a ditch swearing repeatedly.

So yeah I tried sticking it in low-range all wheel drive and reversing my way out. I reckon the car had the torque necessary to do it, the failing factor was the grass/reeds/sand that the front wheels were slipping on.

So to cut an already long-winded story short. We called the RACQ, a tow truck came and after about an hours worth of attempts, decided he couldn't do it. So he buggered off (it was about 1:30am by this stage). Cops rocked up also, put me on the bag and quite cruelly tried to make out as if I'd blown over the limit (hadn't had a drink in days). So yeah got my mum to come pick me up and went home. Tried again this morning, called RACQ again, they sent a different type of truck to try. He got there, saw it and realised they'd need a second truck. So it took two tow trucks to get my car out of the ditch. And despite having RACQ membership, it cost me $165 - which I had to borrow from my friends mum who lived up the road because they wanted it on the spot.

To add insult to injury, once he'd got it up onto the tray, he got in his truck and drove, without realising that my car wasn't secured yet... so back it rolled crashing into the back of the truck and cracking my JDM tail lights and making a big dent into what was an otherwise perfect panel. NOT HAPPY with that bit :***:.

But good news was it was driveable and I managed to limp it home (only a 10 minute drive away). There's no obvious damage and it was still driving rather smoothly with only the nuisance value of the tail lights and the front rego plate gettting really bent up and coming off.

So in conclusion. I'd say it's definitely an interesting way to have my first proper accident and lucky that theres no major damage to my car (I don't have comprehensive insurance). That being said though, I really need to get off my arse and get a job now :ninja:.

Hope you found some humour in my mis-fortune. At least I (and every single one of my friends, family, neighbours and relatives) can.

Nick.

This is the part that concerns me. Three guys at a scenic spot, late at night? :friends: lol

Id hope that the towie is paying for the repairs to the light and panel though?

They didn't wanna risk getting caught smoking by their mum or something. I'm not quite sure their reasoning, I was just going with the flow for the hell of it. The coppers picked up on that too and were making jokes. Coolest cops I've dealt with in quite some time.

As for the towie paying for repairs.... I pointed it out to him and he just shrugged... Just because my car's old and already has a few ding's doesn't make it right to add a few more. My dad's livid cos we spent ages in this wreckers yard trying to get them in the first place.

I know the name of the company, and the towie's name. I reckon I'd need some good luck getting them to cough up for it though.

At the time I was just sorta glad that it was just out of the ditch and only really now that I'm sat at home thinking about does it annoy me more.

Ok so heres the ultra devastating bad news.

As per the damage by the tow truck drivers, went down to two local smash repairers to get some quotes... both around about the $2000..... Quite rich considering I'd probably struggle to get much more than double that for the entire car....

So yeah tried ringing the Towing company, explained my story only to get told "Oh no the manager isn't here at the moment".

The screwed thing is, I'm with the RACQ and still got charged for the towing service.... Someone mentioned to me to take up the claim through the RACQ cos they're likely to have more sway than myself or my parents trying to cold call the company.

Let this just be a reminder to anyone who ever requires towing service. Don't Use "Hervey's Towing".

I'll get some photo's of the damage tomorrow when it's light again.

:***::***::***::***::***::***::nono::glare:.

Yeah, well the Towie SHOULD pay for the damage he did.. there was witnesses right?

Most Towies are arrogant pr!cks, EG: when we got the b4 dropped off to mick's.. he  just dumped the car in Micks driveway to his workshop blocking the road and just asked for the money and pissed off. No help offered at all.

the car couldnt roll at all.. so we had to use the rally car to drag it down the back.

Feel your pain Nick.

Before the Lib, I had a Galant. I hit a pot hole and popped the front control arm out. Because I'd said I'd hit something, they (Hervey's) claimed it was an accident so they were legally able to charge the $240 or what ever it was to take it around the block to their yard. This was back when I was still on my P's, Luckily the old man came to my rescue and tore strips off the manager there.

yes tilt trays can be a hassle and a half, thank god my old man has his own. Lol. And yes that particular mob r knowin to be cheap, but bloody rough. Ya better off taking it to racq as the job would have been subied off them, and like u said it's all about pull with these sorta ppl. If u don't do it fast though, it will take time to get it outta them. They may try show u legal docs that say things aren't thier responsibility, but witnesses will make that hard if he did wat u said. Wat a fkn moron though lol. I had a phone call from their manager this afternoon. I have to drive it out to Park Ridge on Tuesday for them to assess it and take photo's and whatnot. The manager mentioned they owned their own panel shop so any work would be done by them... Not too sure I trust them to do the work though. Bit of a bastard as well, cos my parents will be at work, so I'll be having to go it alone. It's hard enough to be taken seriously as a 17 year old anyways, but when they'll be trying to defend myself, I can see myself getting seriously frustrated at them.

Though it'd be pretty hard for them to prove that it wasn't them who did it. The car went in forwards, so there was absolutely no damage to the back. It's plain and clear to see that the damage was caused once it was on the truck.

I'm still scratching my head as to why exactly I had to pay... What's the point of RACQ membership exactly? At least I didn't have to pay the extra $251 to drop my car 2 suburbs over.

Also, there was a witness. A friend of mine was there waiting to follow me home in her car to make sure I could limp it home without any issues.

Mate, yeah being 17 yrs old sucks, but hey i deal with it.

Just be very informative and basically tell them that you want it fixed as they caused the damage due to the car not being tied down properly..

if they say or the damage was done before.. just laugh and say you have witness's.

two words against one.

Depends on how you mean member. As in roadside assistance???? Or insured through RACQ???? Roadside assistance won't cover accidents. Insurance covers that matey. If your car is insured, let these pricks know that and then your insurance company will deal with them.

Yeah I have roadside assistance... but technically it wasn't an accident, it was a bogging. They attempted it the night it happened, and I didn't have to pay that guy. But had to pay the guys when they got it out the next morning.

Maybe the roadside assistance only covered the first truck? Either way, it was an RACQ certified service that eventually got it out, so maybe I should phone the RACQ and get them to help me out with my claim for the damage the towies caused?

Contact RACQ for sure, and get them to do the leg work. I would assume any automotive business in QLD would cringe at losing it's association with RACQ. As ye' ol' automobile club doesn't hand out those contracts to anyone.

And being an automotive business they should have huge insurance cover for any damage caused to vehicles in their care, just like a dealership does. Don't give up, RACQ should straighten the stingey tools out. And I'll remember to stay clear of said towing company.

Mate as much as I'd like to help you out with ya project car and see my old car transformed into something pretty awesome, just have to say it's not for sale.

For the measly sum of money I'd be likely to get for it, theres no way I could get another car that is even half as good. So at this point in time, it's not for sale, but good luck with ya search mate!

We'll all be keen to see what eventuates I'm sure.

Nick.
