Wrote Off My Wagon :(.

  Top of Page

Saturday night on my way to work - was about 11:30pm I accidentally ended the life of my Liberty.

Literally outside my work is where I had the crash. I'll give you a bit of a rundown.

I was stopped on Russell St waiting at lights to turn right into Merivale St - which is literally then a 100m drive to the entrance to my works car park (Convention Centre). I'd kinda zoned out being so close to work and didn't really notice exactly how wet the road was. I took off - just normally, not really giving it any stick. Accelerated up to about 30 when the rear end of the car just went.... The car started fish-tailing a few times - and on wet road with 205 series tyres with minimal amounts of tread, I could tell it wasn't going to end well.

I tried to correct but it all happened so quickly - eventually it just locked left and headed straight for the kerb. Mounted the kerb onto a whole heap of shrubs and hedges and was a passenger from there. Couldn't stop, couldn't steer, so all I could do was brace myself for the Street Light pole coming up.

I hit that - it hurt a bit, but I was ok. It collapsed down blocking off the exit to the car park. Which caused a bit of chaos - as a 1000 person dinner function was just finishing, so there was lots of taxi's and people everywhere. None of whom came over to me to check if I was alright or say anything. They all stood on with stupid guffaws on their faces not knowing what to do.

I yelled out to a couple of the guys standing close by if they could head into the building and let building security know what had just happened. After about 10 minutes and no-one rocking up I figured I'd better go in and tell them myself. When I got in there it was the first they'd heard of it - so those other two blokes that I'd asked to go in and tell security had just buggered off. To be quite frank I was apalled at the sheer lack of help I got from the surrounding people - there was easily 50 people around - none of whom helped or anything. So much for living in a friendly city ay.

The police that came to the scene were pretty cool - they were from the station which adjoins the Convention Centre - and seeing as I work there they weren't being total c&*ts about it. He said that it'll be reviewed and I might end up with a court summons or just a fine. However the fact that they didn't fine me on the spot was a good thing I felt.

So long story short I'm now without a car - I only had 3rd party insurance (not worth paying 2 grand a year insurance for a car that's worth little more than that) - but at least that will cover the cost of the street light I took out.

Now that it's all said and done however I have some new plans. The car's coming back to my place tomorrow and I will be parting out anything that's worth some money. I'll start a forsale thread etc etc (Gen1 S1 btw).

I must say I was extremely impressed with how the car held up in the accident. The crumple zone truly did crumple and absorbed heaps of the impact. It's a true testament to Subaru's safety - even for a 19 year old car.

As such my next car is definitely going to be another Liberty. Under the advisement of my parents it's looking like I'll be getting a nice 2.5 Gen 4.

At first I considered a Gen 3 RX - but so far the one's I've seen on the internet have been for sale for idiotic prices like $15-17000 - frankly too much for what it is.

So I've decided to spend around about the 15-20 mark and get a Gen 4. If anyone's browsing around and see's a Gen 4 that they think is a good buy - I'd definitely appreciate it if you'd let me know.

Anyways - thanks for reading my post. Depressing as it may be - I'm trying to look at the positive side. I've definitely learnt a good hard few lessons about car control - and also on being stingy about replacing tyres. But hey, I'm young and in to cars; a crash is more or less inevitable. Oh and if you're just going to reply with insults or flames or anything else - don't bother. I don't want to read it and it adds nothing to the site - so please, spare us.

Nick.
(PS. Anyone wanna sell me their Gen 4?)

The car should be back at my house within a few hours.... so I'll have some pics up soon.

Cheers for the kind words people. Here's hoping that I'll be driving a newer nicer Liberty very soon - pending what Mr Bank Manager says.

Part Out begins tonight... I'll start a for sale thread later on.

Ouch, sorry to hear your pride and joy is gone.
I have to say though, that sounds like quite a lot of sliding for 30km/hr...

Funds for the next ride are already sorted.... It's just finding one that I'm happy with and for a good price that's the hard part.

Perhaps a 2.5l Manual Gen 4 2004 + with 120,000 or less for 16 is too much to ask for.

Time will tell I suppose.

Thats not really viewing pleasure, its more of cringe worthy. Shame to see.

I also had you mistaken for someone else with the "CS9" comment.

P for "Police Target" Plates..... Otherwise I'd definitely be going a turbo.

For now I'm happy to settle for something sensible until I'm a bit older and more experienced behind the wheel. As such I want a nice comfortable cruiser that'll hold it's value somewhat for the time that I own it. That and I want something 2003+ with preferably under 100k on the clock.

Fussy I know.... I'm probably as bad with cars as I am with woman... It's a terrible curse lol.

Sounds like you've learnt a valuable lesson from your low speed slide!

Nothing wrong with being fussy when its your coin you're dropping. Good luck with the search.

i had a pretty similer thing happen to me, only i got out of it really lucky

it happened out front of my school. running late, being tired, music up too loud, was raining aswell, felt like i was on ice though, but i wasnt dirving aggresivly.
I put my front left wheel back into the chassie and gave the rear a prettty crazy cambar.
new control arms hubs sway bar links, rear cross member is bent giving me a bit of toe in/out but it'll be fixed soon smile

Goodluck in finding a replacement
