WIKI thread.

What do people think about having a wiki component attached to the Ozliberty site?

Basically, it'll be a mini encyclopedia that could be used to archive good information and be used as a reference point for the "new people" that log on and ask the usual questions, can use.

Personally, I think the sticky'd thread approach to be quite confusing, outdated, unorganised, and inconclusive (as some threads are locked).

Also, the wiki pages would naturally be free from spamming.

discuss.

I think its a great idea.

Although we would have to make a very conscious effort to avoid spam.
And we need to have some verification of the information within, to avoid people being misguided.

Basicly, i think if one wishes to post information in such a thread, they need to list the source's of the information as well.

What I was thinking was to sift through the tech section of the forums, find the good threads, and leave the other ones.

Tech threads can remain to discuss points and aspects. But the wiki could be held as a reference point.

This would of course be a forum wide effort in regards to accuracy of information.

Well yes. I have actually been doing this, and saving down information on notepad, so that i could put it in a more reader friendly form.

If we were to do it this way, would we lock the WIKI forum, and assign some members to be WIKI mods, who would take contributions from other members and add them as they saw fit?

Currently i'm splitting it into Gen/Component/information.

I.E, Gen2 - Exhaust - GT/RS
Recomended exhaust diameter for "X' is commonly agreed apon as being a 3.0' form the catalyc converter back.
yada yada yada.

A Wiki Thread would be a good Idea, as a relatively new user. when I joined I saw people asking questions and some where not getting much help. Others where linking to old threads. Which to me seemed outdated and were not really that much help.

If you had some mods who knew each model ie Gen1-Gen4, and knew specifics, on the right mods to add. You would posibly even need someone from each state/area ie Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney, Newcastle etc. Who know the right places and where to find good deals.

Along with alowing the users to post requests. If you could implement this sort of idea, making it easier for a new user to visit, maybe in the welcome pm, send the wiki link to the user, get them to read through when they want to modify their car.

Will you want to include the cold hard facts about these cars? eg.
Weights, Dimensions, Factory power outputs etc?
or will this be more of a tuners guide to different model Legacy/Liberty models?

That would sell it to 99% of the people on here alone.

Get to it, anymore 'discussions' and it will remind me of work.

Seeing that you're more, how can I put it more eloquently..... SAVVY with the administration here, perhaps you could put in a good word for me with this.

Basically, I think it requires the installation of a wiki software component onto the forum software, so the two ties into each other.

As you can see, especially after a few refreshing WA ales, my computerising skills are of somewhat lacking. So I have no understanding about this.

But rest assured, I have been googling. Not entirely about wiki's however big_smile

I always though Googling yourself meant the other thing...
I will look into the WiKi over the next few days. Between us, we can make it happen. It WILL be a real feature over here at OzLib. If we put in the ground work, I'm sure admin will be more than happy to implement the app.

IIRC to have certain levels of access you need media wiki (but im not 100% on that) otherwise anyone can edit the pages.

You can add tags to the articles such {{construction}} which adds (at my work anyway)

"Under Construction - The information contained within this article may be incomplete, incorrect or outdated."

or {{moderation}}

"Pending Moderation - This article, or a recent change within it, has not yet been approved by a moderator"

These tag are classed as a category which will generate a page of all articles tag with the above. A mod can then approve/delete etc.

Good idea. We need to have a minimum amount of information required which a few guys have already mentioned. I'm only thinking along the lines of DIYs so here's a few things which I reckon should be mandatory for all DIYs:

Car model / year / transmission
Tools used
Parts used including part numbers
Cost
Time Taken
Difficulty rating (1-10)
Suitable for (Beginner / Backyard Mech / Pro) - Can extend that to 5 levels perhaps

Before modification - some blurb about the car before the mod
Results - results after mods

Vendor / Parts supplier information

Thats a starting point anyway

Out of interest has anyone come across this site before?: subiwiki.com

Maybe bigger than what Ozlib wants to create - but surely it would make sense to develop what they already have, even if you want it to be AUDM specific.

Continuing in this vein, if possible it would be useful if one of the things that could be added to the wiki would be a page dedicated to stores and online stores for parts (both performance and replacement), so basically you could just have the store name, link and short description of what they sell.
Not sure if this would defeat the point of having vendors on the site and i hope it wouldnt because id have no wish to take any business off them, but its just something i thought could be helpful.
