Why Subaru?

  Top of Page

As the title suggests, what prompted your decision to purchase a Subaru.
I've owned Mitsubishi's, Nissans, Toyota's, Honda's and Ford's. I will never ever spend money on a Holden or even take it if it was free.
My decision was based on value/build quality for the money. I've driven many very expensive Euro marques and couldn't justify the price over the Subaru's I have owned.
What's your say?

Did this decision based on value include the $$$ u/we/us have spent on mods? lol

Subaru for AWD, build (when left stock), comfort and driveability...pricewise i am still a bit sketchy about some of their cars' values.

I dont know why I got mine... I think I just enjoyed the way they drived, the prospect of owning a twin turbo that was not just some cheap crappy hard riding go cart full of cheap plastic like in silvias and such cars. As for Mitsubishi I wouldn't spit on them, we have so many come through dads shop with stupid problems that shouldnt happen, kind of like hyundai's, problems such as windows winding mechanisms falling to peices and the window falls down into the door... very common, or electrical issues is another we find, look at the TS Magna, those things were a complete bucket, the Lifters get soo noisy in the things it sounds like the engine is going to fall to peices anyway I should stop bitching about Mitsu.

Re: Why Subaru?

I bought my first subaru, an '88 L series Touring Wagon at a caryard my ex-girlfriend's father owned, after he gave me a 1988 Nissan Pulsar SSS, and the gearbox died after a day's use...(I wasn't even fanging it!!)  He went on holidays, and I ran his caryard. I only ever sold one car wink

It was on his yard for $5500. I managed to haggle myself down to $2000! When he returned, he wasn't impressed big_smile

I only intended to buy it as a parts runabout for the BMW I had. Also, the odd fishing trip and fang around.

I must honestly say, it was the most fun car I have owned besides my current ride. Although I spent an additional $8000+ on modifications alone, it was my daily ride, and survived even the most ridiculous stunts I had thrown at it.

Then, due to personal reasons, I decided to sell up and I was ready to move overseas for a few years. I then started to date my current fiance, and I decided to buy a car again. I wanted to buy an RS Liberty wagon, but out of frustration after looking at a few horrible examples, I decided to up the ante, and started to look at import Legacy wagons.

Then I bought my current one. One year later, I'm loving it more and more. The mods list, despite my swearing to my fiance, that it would never happened, it has. :blush2:

Re: Why Subaru?

For me, it started with my parents buying an Outback in 1999 after looking for a new car - they were oh so close to getting a Commodore station wagon until they test drove the Outback.

I then bought a 2001 Liberty as my first car, my Mum then got a 2003 WRX and my Dad has recently upgraded to an MY07 Outback.

So for us, we just seem to keep getting Subaru's.. I think after owning the first Outback, nothing else really seems to compare in terms of drivability,  ride, comfort, build quality and value for money when you look at that price bracket.

I've said this to a few people before, but when my Dad decided to get a newer car, he didn't even look at any other make, it was simply a case of what Subaru had out at the moment.. Whether that's good orbad, I don't know - But I've got nothing bad to say about their cars!

Re: Why Subaru?

Well I always love the looks of Subaru wagons.
And then a good mate got himself a nice G1 S1 legacy GT wagon, I grew to love them.
Although due to age and lack of money buying a turbo subaru wasn't going to work out well, so I got myself a 00 RX wagon, which I loved, look so much better then the GT and went well.
But I always wanted a turbo/twin turbo wagon.
I then learned about the GT-B's and I wanted one BAD!!

But alas I could never find a manual GTB for the right price.
So I built one smile

I haven't look back since, although I am tempted with an R34 GTR

Re: Why Subaru?

Fell in love with a 98 Subaru Impreza GX when I was looking for my second car (First was an XE falcon my dad bought for me. Which I would honestly take back any day!). Hammered the absolute crap out of the Impreza and it never missed a beat.

Sold it due to DUI. Bought an Imported 1989 Toyota Corsa which I promptly blew up (boost controller fell off:) ) but I had the taste for boost!.

Saw a Liberty B4 for sale in Kal (very rare things here) and decided just to look. Fell in love when I hopped in. Then the guy throws me the keys and says "go for a spin" and that was it. Without any cash or even knowing if I would get loaned the money, I told him I'd buy it. Luckily I got the loan! Who knows what I would have done to get the money.

And I've never looked back. Every car from now on will be a Subaru. Im hooked!

Liked the B4 since it was announced to be released here in Aus and tried to convince my parents to buy one but they didn't. Fast forward a few years I wanted something that still had warranty, was sleeper, was quick and cheap insurance. B4 ticked all the boxes.

Re: Why Subaru?

I drove a mates WRX a few times (I'd been driving a Landcruiser for 6 yrs) I'd had V8's & fast 4's but nothing like this, so 3 yrs ago I bought a damaged Impreza to do a conversion on but it was too good a car (10yo GX with 47k on the clock) so after fixing it I made a 6g profit, decided I'd do a Liberty instead after learning i bit more about Subi's (the car I have now which is my keeper) & since then I've bought & sold a few & have 3 more in my driveway waiting to be finished, it can be quite profitable.
So in3 yrs I've had
94 Impreza, fixed & sold
98 Liberty, Keeper.
91 Legacy wagon, spare & loan car for 2 yrs, fixed & sold
96 Liberty LX sedan, fixed & sold, ex g/f's
98 Impreza hatch, fixed & sold
97 STI hatch for parts
98 WRX for parts (bent in half)
95 WRX Hatch, the two above were for fixing this, unfinished project (haven't touched it in 2 yrs) prolly jack it up & use as an offroader, it will look like a JDM MY00 STI.
99 WRX bought for ex g/f, fixed & sold
96 Impreza GX hatch, should be finished within 2 weeks, let my son use it for a while then sell it.
01 WRX Bug Eye, undecided but should be back on the road within 3 weeks.
My son has had 2 Leone's & two RS's
My daughter has had a Leone & just bought a 00 Ltd edition WRX with leather etc, she was actually the first in the family to have a Subi....7yrs ago.

I was actually buying a VX-SS commodore, I had my heart set on it, I seen a B4 as a bit of a joke and enjoyed the test-drive..

The bloke at the dealership gave me the s**ts that much by harrassing me over the phone, that I bought the B4 in spite of him.

Now im stuck with this s**t box and want another commodore.

Always been a fan of the boxer motor (mad porsche head).
When looking for a new car, decided on the MY00 wrx hatch which i ordered brand spankers in late 99, back then it was a 3 months+ wait.

That was a journey of mild upgrades to extreme modifications.

I know them backwards now and besides spending 3 times as much on a euro marque they are fantastic value for money.  Safe, reliable and easy to enjoy, and the only pillarless 4 door on the market.

I love the Boxer engine even though I have dramas.... I like subaru's probably always will... but everytime an SS drives past that has a decent exhaust system on it OMG...not much can compare, its ear pornography. Plus I love the fact that there is mountain moving torque available from idle, I cant say the same for the B4...its hopeless for torque.. all that said I still love my B4

So if that's how you feel why do you still have it?:Dntknw:  And seem to be an enthusiast.

Anyway i bought my B4 cos i wanted something quick, but to most people on the road looks slow.
Was looking at a rex but saw the B4 from the outside and then the inside and went for that instead. Plus it sounds better to say you have twin turbos then just one. The sensation is awsome in my opinion, quick and then much quicker when most cars are finished. :bye:
Oh yeah and of course there is the handling and AWD and you can not beat the sound.
And as many have said they are excellent value for money for the car you get.

Re: Why Subaru?

The Subaru was the best pick i had:

5 speed V6 VS Comodore
98 WRX (yeah.... insurance would love me long time.......)
98 GX Liberty, it goes alright. Cant complain about a 4 cylinder that can get about like the Ej's.
But i sooo wish i had a HQ 308 Monaro right about now!

MMM Couldnt Afford an audi or a porsche smile.
Sat in a few rexy's and although loved the go and sound, it was a gen 3 rx liberty (even tho it was a wags haha), made me love them. Just comfortable , sounded great with an exhaust system. honestly tho what is not love about a subaru, other then gen1's with there hydraulic lifters :suicide2: , whats not to love , sound good go good and the libertys are comfortable.
