why do cars steer a certain way???

  Top of Page

hi, just after some insight as to why cars (in Australia at least) seem to mostly track to the left.
It must have something to do with being driven constantly on road that are generally banked to the left for water runoff, right?
When i bought my Lib it always tracked dead straight (on a flat straight road), but since i put new wheels and tyres (with wheel alignment and balance) it turns left slightly...    :suicide2:
is it the steering mechanism?
is it old shocks?
is it something else?
:help:

normal....the camber of most roads is to allow water runoff.

Sounds like whoever did your alignment doesn't really know what they are doing.

Mind you, its almost impossible to find a person that can wheel align a car properly.

I had new tyres + align a while ago and the car would pull left when you let go of the wheel. Took it back to the shop and they said "You shouldnt be letting go of the wheel while you drive".

Maybe see if your local subaru mechanic can recommend a good wheel aligner that knows the suspension setup of these cars.

bigger wheels/tyres tend to track more on the road

Yep, try to find some one who can do good alignments!
Sounds like it's a bit out.
I had a customer destroy a set of new front tyres in less than 2000k because the alignment was out.

in sydney we have a very good steering shop (hiesman's suspension) i asked the same question why does my car sometimes pull to the left when braking and i have to steer very slightly to the right. he said next time it happens take a look at th road ahead. i did and noticed the road had a lot of camber or slope from centre to gutter.

actually more sounds like you don't know what you are talking about, I don't mean to sound rude but Shane (RSK) is right, most roads are built with camber to allow water run-off, the degree obviously varies so the person who does the alignment isn't able to put the alignment out to counter this, safest bet is to set it how the factory did and let the driver worry about the minute amount of pull to the left if the wheel is let go.

Better to pull to the left... than right (oncoming traffic)

It depends too on the amount of effort you are using to keep the car straight... if you are constantly yanking right then you should worry but if its just... holding the wheel... don't waste your time...

thanks for the comments guys

I'm actually talking about the car turning left on the occasional FLAT road i come across

I wouldn't surprise me if the Bob Jane i went to was dodgy, they didn't convince me of their competance with much else...

anyone here have actual knowledge of what parts are actually out of wack?

Its not that parts are actually faulty, its just likely that the wheels just aren't aligned properly. Your suspension is slightly adjustable so that it can be tuned to suit your conditions, and more likely than not the guys at the shop have pointed the one wheel slightly off. Doesn't take much, you'll notice 1mm of misalignment between the centre of a wheel and the outer edge.

Most wheel alignments are just alterations to the nuts on the tie rod.

Thanks captain obvious. I have always had my cars setup so you dont need to hold the wheel one way or another. Even on cambered roads it goes straight ahead. If you are driving a car (long distance) and you have to use effort to keep it straight then its a shyte setup.

So you are saying that... regardless of the camber of the road your car will still steer straight when the wheel is let go?
on 100% level road, and on road with a  few degrees camber heading down towards the gutter?

And obviously if you have to use effort to hold the steering wheel in one direction to stop it from pulling off the road its a **** set-up.. but the type we are talking about you wont notice unless you let go of the wheel.

also air pressure - differing tyre pressure will cause that problem too

Here's another one for ya.

Just the 08 Wrx wheel aligned. He has actually put 1/2 a degree of negative camber more on the passenger side front. He says that this is australian standard........ i think its bull actually. I took it back to ask some q's and he said to me
" If i put the same camber on the front wheels, no only will it pull HARDER to the left but it will actually make the car a bit nervous"

Go figure that one out!!! Im taking it back into subaru for some warrenty stuff and gunna ask them.

Re: why do cars steer a certain way???

that is odd :S generally you would have matching camber and toe adjustments.... and if your car is that way inclined caster and SAI.

sounds true as the guy at heismen suspension told me the same thing, these guys have a very good reputation when it comes to suspension and steering in cars

While this could be a few things, i would say its probably either wheel alignment out or your steering wheel has been put back on crooked.

You could check your tyres are the same pressure too!

How hard is it pulling? Hit a gutter/hole recently? Could be a bent control arm.

I was actualy told not that long ago that the steering HAD to pull to the left slightly to conform with the ADR. reasoning being in the event of a microsleep/passing out/Heart attack etc were the car can no longer be effectively controled by the driver the car would pull to the left and hopefully into a barrier rather then into oncomming traffic.

Reminds me of my old falcon. Gave the alignment mob my own specs (heaps of neg camber and pos caster) and when I picked it up the pr1ck$ had aligned it standard. They argued it would scrub tyres, I argued I dont give a stuff about the tryres and why didnt you do what I paid for.

Sounds to me like the OP has an alignment problem.
