Whole new car after Xede tune.

  Top of Page

Hey Guys,

Sorry its a long one....

Just thought i'd give an update on my car.  I figured it'd be a hell of a summer this year and the car definately needed a tune due to pinging.  As some of you Melb crew may know (and heard), i've been having issues with my boost (or lack thereof) fluctuating b/w 0.5-0.8bar when it starts to boost; in conjunction with a leaking-type sound.   It was a B1tch of a car to drive.

I brought my car to STI to have an Xede put in.  Car felt better to drive; but the fluctuating boost was still there. Vin from STI said  the sound appeared to be due to the EBC solenoid; which in turn may be due to my EBC not being able to cope with the TT setup....he said he could get more out of the car if the EBC was taken out.

So, i took his advise and off went the EBC.  His diagnosis was spot on and first impressions thus far is (as mentioned numerous times before), THIS IS HOW SUBARU SHOULD HAVE RELEASED IT!  The car is completely different.  It now has smooth acceleration, VOD is virtually gone (only a slight pause before it boosts again) and the 2nd turbo gives it a real punch.  Boost gauge reads it running at 1.0-1.2bar which is what i wanted it tuned to.

Drivability and responsiveness has increased 10 fold, even for an auto!  Took her for a quick spin thru the twisties last night and was very impressed over stock.  I can actually punch it in-gear now at 2500rpm and not dread the VOD coming in play.  Most importantly, NO PINGING! (yet...)  Today would be a good test being mid 30's.

Thanks to Vin at STI for his help/tuning efforts.  Compared to stock where the car punched out 110kws, My last dyno (with the boost issues) topped out at 150kws.  I'm very happy with the results.  Mods are the std; TBE, CAI and Xede over stock.  I wasn't given a dyno graph for the lastest retune but emailed Vin to see if i can get me hands on one; will post up if i can get it.

To any B4 owners out there driving around stock, i highly recommend a retune, you won't be dissapointed.  Bring on the next meet n greet/twisties runs! smile

Cheers,

Kev.

Yeah loving the car again mate.  Mines a 03 model.  Xede + dyno tune set me back $1600 (+BS GST).  Better option than a Tek........plus i can sleep easier knowing its less likely of going bang one day...

B4Cruiser is a moccasin wearing bogan who drinks VB all day and has no access to OzLiberty so he has offered to mow my lawn for a month if i upload his dyno chart for him. Note this is when he still had the EBC hence the lower power output.

hey Kev,

great stuff dude, especially in summer, Im yet to hear my car ping yet, and thats with a home made Kosti tune!! (well done fat head)..

but for some reason my boost has dropped from the 20's down to 17 psi.. maybe the hot weather trips the ECU to lower boost??

but all the same, enjoy the car dude, tune is the best thing ever!, along with Kosti's ass.

Well done getting it tuned,  I was looking into this option when i bought our B4, but ended up gong the Kosti method instead and tuning it myself.....with some outside help to get me started as I had no idea how to tune a car........  As a matter of fact,  i still dont have much of an idea about tuning the car... lol

XXB4XX.......  the intake temperature will affect the wastegate duty causing it to open less under higher temperatures..... its to reduce boost in hotter temperatures without having to do a whole retune.   Kosti would be able to change it so it doesnt drop so much boost,  but your better off running a little less at higher temps anyway arent you??

yeah, your right.. the last thing I want is for it to attempt 20psi in 35 degree heat.. thats a recipe for disaster..

but this morning alone I only got 17psi out of it at 22 degrees.. I guess i'll wait till winter again and see how we go.. it better go back up to 20+psi!!

would the ecu teach itself average temperatures and reduce boost, meaning that I'll have to drive it a bit in winter for it to learn to boost higher again?

These are some 2D maps for wastegate duty and air temperature.   this may help you understand a little better,   these are my maps and will probably be different to yours,  but it will give you an idea of why it may be dropping boost at 22 degrees, if Kosti has it set to,  it all depends on when he was tuning it aswell.  as it was prolly a cooler day/night I'm guessing and he may not have touched these maps as they did not come into play at the time.

Hope I made sense,  and I'm sure Kosti could answer your question alot better than i could.   Sorry B4Cruiser for hijacking your thread too

Edit*  to answer your question about it learning average temps,  it shouldnt....  I'm pretty sure that it only "learns"  timming and IAM (Advanced multiplier).  Just give it a reset and it'll be back to when you drove it the first time after kosti tuned it.

AFAIK there is no boost compensation table for intake temps on the B4.

There is coolant temp compensation however. Looking at some of the ROMs i have here these are zero'd out. I woudl be more inclined to just putting t down as heatsoak and relative humidty that is causing your reduced performance.

What's your IAM say?

I know there is no boost compensation tables,  but there is waste gate duty compensation tables......   like i said in a previous post,  I know little about tunning. But  doesnt the wastegate controll the boost??

dont apologise for jacking a thread when its not whoring, but actual useful ecu info..

thanks heaps for this, it does make ALOT of sense...

we tuned the car and completed the mapping when we were having 12 degree nights..

the maps wouldnt come in to play at all at those temps!, ... but is it intake temp or intake and water temp?

even on 16-18 degree nights I was hitting the big boost in winter.. now on the same temps im getting ghey boost.. but by reading your post and your maps, I  guess I have to wait for the thermometer to drop below 18 degrees to get the maps and boost back!

once again,

thanks heaps!

It controls how quickly it attains the target boost, yes. they higher the duty cylce the quicker you reach target boost but the more likely you are to overboosting and then it will pull boost out, the result is this wavering boost curve.

MAybe your AM has dropped,  as the higher temps have kiscked in,  your ECU has dropped the IAM from 16 (assuming kosti set it at 16 as the start point) to somewhere like 9 or 10....

I'll just pinch Kosti's one on the poker night..

Better yet, I will let him do his map recording rubbish he does, and post up some pics..

at first I didnt really worry.. but now its kinda getting to me..

the car still has great pull on the primary, but the 20 psi used to shine on the secondary turbo.. now at 16psi.. its kinda not right!, I never really got the 20psi on the primary cause it only boosted at lower rpm's till the changeover happened for the secondary
