When Do You Speed?

  Top of Page

Hey i have had this thought running through my mind for ages...
During which time would you estimate most speeders are caught by police? During the day or night?
If you have been done for speeding before...what time were you caught (generally speaking ie day or night)?
Oh yeah and if anyone on here is a serving member of the police force (*ahem* police service) give everyone some feedback on when most people tend to decide to speed.

Poll attatched.

There are multiple questions to this poll.

I would think that most speeders get caught at night and this is why, at night you can not see a radar gun or cop car until the last minute where that can see your light from miles away, at night there is not as many cars on the road so police can identify someone speeding quicker, at night drivers think they can get away with more as there are less cars on the road.

for the other question i have been done for speeding 3 times, sorry 4 and they all have been during the day, why because I was in a rush and at night I am just cruising and have no reason to speed, plus I know that I could be caught much easily at night.

Generally speaking more people get done speeding at night.

It is quieter, not as many cars and people around, and a lot easier to spot.

LIDAR Radar can get a lock on your speed at 1600 metres, well well before you have even spotted the police, but generally will get a fix about 400 metres away, which is still a fair way.

Spotting radar is easier at night, because you can see the red laser beam easier than during the day.

Speeding is naughty, Don't do it.
Skooby, I didn't know there was a visible laser coming out of those things, pretty cool, where abouts on the car do you generally get a lock? and how long does it take to get one? How accurate is LIDAR? I'm assuming its more accurate then what is on the HW Patrol cars.

Re: When Do You Speed?

To be honest, I only speed now when some asshat is right up my arse giving me **** about doing the speed limit. This usually involves me speeding up, to get around the other cars and move over to let them past.

I find myself shying away from speeding as I drive more, as I am too paranoid about being done for it and just do not see the point.

Occasionally I do a bit of spirited driving, and remember how fun it feels to give the car a squirt - but with risk factors involved and more importantly the damn petrol prices these days, I find it much easier to take it easy.

There is one particular spot, which I absolutely loathe driving through - St Marys on the M4, through the roadwork zone (drops from 110km/h down to 80km/h). Every prick seems to just sail on through at 110km/h without slowing down, I've seen ONE person pulled over there by an unmarked car in god knows how many months it's been there. I have actually been honked, and high beamed when driving at the posted speed through there, GRRR.

I would laugh if one day there were a few un-marked cars sitting there and collected them all as they went through.

thats exactly what i do. tap the brakes a bit and it usually scares them off, but if they persist, then its down to 40kms/hr for me big_smile

the downside is it then produces road rage. the other day i had four blokes in a hilux ute telling me to pull over so they could belt me. there was no gutter, so they were driving up on my left hand side and mouthing off. that was all because they were sitting right up my arse so i slowed down

All the radars are VERY accurate, and calibrated regularly and have certificates to prove, so people can't go to court and say it was faulty.

There is no visible red beam from the unit to your car, but you can see the red dot coming from the handpiece itself.

Yeah i know there are very strict regulations in place with regards to the implimentation and use of hand held radar guns, as when they were coming into use a decade or so ago ( in aus) there was a bit of controversy because people were (read the police) were using them incorrectly, ie, instead of holding the gun in a stationary position at a certain angle they would move them along the length of the vehicle, adding to the apparent clocked speed of the vehicle, you can move a radar gun along a wall and get a pretty substantial speed reading, my four year old brother's hot wheels radar gun is testament to this.

What about the Speedo's of the actual Highway Patrol Cars, as far as I know they are standard units which means they are not dead accurate, but infact out by upto 10% (most wouldn't be that far out) but still this would be enough to negate any accuracy claimed by a HP cars, unless they were stationary, or are these speedo's different to what is found in the standard commodore and falcons? :scout:

Yeah the govt and police can pretty much anal rape you in any which way they care to, as most people have neither the money (sometimes they dont but go to court anyway) nor the time to contest small claims in court (i got another letter from the OFFICE OF STATE REVENUE, telling me that the offence i commited in Meadowbank stoping in a no stopping area to read a fking map whilst doing my job warrants a $200 fine) Im 18 and thats more than half of what i earn in a week. Personally i think they are a load of money grubbing blood sucking sh!tbags, that lack any form of reasoning power or rationality, as well as any sign of a moral centre. My 2c. I would have thought most speeders would get done during the daytime, but i guess that the general concensus points towards driving attitude at night being a key factor in influencing people to push the loud pedal.

Oh yeah...is it true that only 1 in 3 fixed speed cameras in australia actually work? Or is that just a myth. How many people here know whata speed trap is? (i do, but i think it would be interesting to discuss them as im not sure wether they have them here in aus, in the uk they certainly do)

Yeah mate that is quite a scary thing when that occurs.

I had some taxi do it to me through that work zone I talked about in my last post... He had 2 passengers as well. I took delight in flipping them the bird as they drove past smile

After, I caught up and did it again and then the passengers joined in, so I gave them a wave and slowed down (the taxi was doing 30+ over the speed limit with passengers!). I did take a photo of the Taxi first, number plate included.

If i DO speed its a quick foot down and then slow down. Never a long period of speeding as thats when you get caught.

Ive been caught (first few years of driving) at all times of the day/night.

dunno if there any different to stock. the 10% is within ADR so if you were done for 66 in a 60 could you not argue that it was your speedo that was out, and you were unawares that you were speeding at all...
on a side note. don't they have to  tail you for a set period? 3-400meters i think. anyone who speeds for that long with out realizing there is a HP car following deserves the ticket IMO!
as for my own driving habits. i like crusin never have more then a quick spirt to overtake or whatever then slow down on main roads, and rarly at night... as it is damn near impossible to spot an unmarked car parked 1km away with a laser pointing at you!

can we all please agree and acknowledge that the RIGHT lane is for cars that want to overtake... the amount of Volvos picking the left lane is insane at the moment!:***:

not to mention people who flog it to get infront overtake and then slow right down...

I speed 90 percent of the time when driving, but its safe speeding, usually only 5 ks over.

Edited: because apparently I don't know my right from my left!

for those that know the area, i normally give the pedal a bit of a kick going down the Bangor Bypass (sutherland to menai) in southern sydney, mainly at night after dropping friends home early in the morning, the speed limit is 80 down there, and i think the worst i've done is 110 in my commodore

(Taken from http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety/speedandspeedcameras/campaigns/speeding.html)

Research has shown that people make false distinctions about categories of speeding.

Many people define speeding  by 5-10 km/h as merely 'driving over the limit' and even view speeding by 10-20 km/h as 'acceptable speeding'. Many people consider 'real speeding' to be only speeding by more than 20 km/h.

These are dangerous attitudes because there is no such thing as safe speeding.
