Whay dont people use the SEARCH function?

  Top of Page

All these new threads popping up, if you do a search, u will find similar threads already posted!! just read those and not waste space posting new threads

for example.....if you want to ask about tyres or rims or where to service your car, DO A SEARCH

there are countless threads on those topics already....

/end rant:crazy:

Ripped from ocau:

Before you post something, do the following three things:

1. Ensure you have the correct forum
2. Check whether your question has been recently answered
3. Try searching

I don't really believe in it, if it was covered and is on the same page of the forum fair enough. But people like to get answers for their own personal scenario. And plus this forum isn't large enough to be whinging about things like this already.

I don't see it being a major problem.

Remember this forum is still young.
For the time being I say let it go.

When the site is older, then we will become a little more tight on that type of thing.

I tried it, nothing happened....

:help:

You also need to mention that in most cases the forum will pull out threads which are similar and tac them on the bottom of the page labelled similar threads..

i'm not fussed, if you don't want to answer a question thats already been answered - don't.

if someone gets no response then politely tell them that there is already a thread covering the topic. no biggie.

i think theres 2 reasons.

1. the search button/link is very small and often goes unnoticed.
2. i dont think there is enough topics to completely cover every little detail. therefore i dont see a problem for new threads to be created to cover new material... all in good time.

As an admin of a forum with 7000+ members and 350,000+ posts I can safely say that the general internet community doesn’t know how to adapt search words.... Things like using alternat words, dropping common words, grouping words with talking marks...  basic stuff to obtain search results that are relevant...

Doing a search for a common word will simply return thousands of results (which you would think is logical, but many don’t understand)... and when you start to combine these, you get even more results... not less as people desire....

An informative thread on how to search correctly helps heaps.... new users get frustrated when everyone tells them to search and they don’t know how to really use the function... so if you say please search for the answer and point the user to somewhere where they can read about searching correctly, you may find the number of requests for duplicate information drops significantly (we did this and there has been a massive drop in duplicate and stupid requests)

But as has been mentioned, this site is still small and growing, so its not too much of an issue , a general search will most likely return what u want....

Some food for thought anyway

Sometimes we just need to remember what the rules of life really are:
You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape
If it doesn't move and should, use WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use Duct Tape.

Yep, take it as a feature of Generation Y.  They want to be spoonfed.

It's a fact of life that forum users will not search.

Now come on, not ALL of us are completely helpless. Some of us Y generationers can string a few search terms together...

Did you run a search for this topic or simply post another thread?smile

I've tried to do a search on topics before and it can be hard if you don't have a clue how to narrow it down.

I'm in the coffee machine business and people ring us up first without reading the quick set up guide instructions first. We want answers quick, not fumble and sort out through stuff, that's too hard.
