What's with Webber?

  Top of Page

What is it that's keeping Mark Webber consistantly outside the top 5 when qualifying - and to a lesser extent, his finishing positions?

He always seems so promising when qualifying, but just doesnt have the pace of the McLaren's, Ferrari's and BMW's? He finally has a reliable car this year, could it have been his lack of consistancy in the car that's thrown him off possibly.

Is it his car/team, or his driving ability? OR are the other guy's just too good?

Im inclined to agree with this, while im happy he is doing alot better this year I just dont think he is on the same level as a driver compared to the top tier guys.

Seriously guys - the main reason he isn't on the pace of the top guys is down to the fact he isn't driving a Ferrari, Maclaren or a BMW. He has never had a top draw car to drive - when he went to Williams they were a team on the way down while the other teams were on the way up. And the other teams - especially Minardi and Jaguar - just didn't have the money or engineering to compete any better than mid field, when the car lasted that is. Red Bull is a team on the way up - they have been impressing this season, showing genuine pace and much improved reliability over last season.

While for those that don't follow F1 closely, it may seem he's not doing much - but trust me, this season he is doing just about as good as can be possible given he's not driving for the top teams.

I am inclined to agree, Webber drives just fine, just needs to have the machinery to back his skills.
They do say a good tradesman never blames his tools, but in this case I would be doing just that, to an extent.
If he sticks it out and the team gets a little more testing time etc up their sleeve he will be in it with a lot more of a chance.

Webber is in the top 5 drivers imo....he has never had the machinery to show his skill. Put him in a ferrari or mclaren and he would be fighting for the championship.
You only have to look at a race which has rain and it equlalises the cars somewhat, he's always at the pointy end of the field.

Have to say he is the unluckiest driver ever. The amount of bad luck he has in races is shocking.

Last year - yes I would have agreed with you he had terrible luck.

However this year I dont think luck has played that big of a part in his average performance.

I find it amusing that you should point how poorly he is performing, while he is having his best, most consistent season ever...

Perhaps it might put things into perspective to point out that he is equal 7th in the driver's championship, ahead of Fernando Alonso and consistently making the top 10 in qualifying.

Would be amusing to put him into Kimmi's Ferrari for a race, and see how he performs. I have a feeling... he would do quite well.

Cheers Nik - but she definately has much better credentials! big_smile lol

Webber is having his best season to date - the championship table perfectly illustrates what I mean by him doing as best as can possibly be expected driving a car that isn't a Ferrari, Maclaren or BMW - he is equal 7th with Jarno Trulli. And the other 6 drivers ahead of him drive either a Ferrari, Maclaren, or BMW... roll

Unfortunately in Formula 1, the car you drive is the biggest deciding factor in how a driver goes. He is definately rated up there as a driver - lots of people would love to see what he could do in Kimi's car thats for sure. Personally I think he would be absolutely blinding quick! :neo:

As for being a tool - well, he does say what he thinks - which is actually a refreshing change for a modern F1 driver.

He is consistant, I agree...he's consistantly just outside the top 5.

Yep, you are right about that...

But as I am trying to point out, if you don't drive for the top 3 teams at the moment (Ferrari, Maclaren, BMW) and all their drivers finish - which will usually mean positions 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th - then where does everyone else finish?

The midfield battle is also extremely tight and intense this year - Red Bull, Renault and Toyota have 6 drivers generally trying to get the last 2 points postions (7 & 8) - sometime 8 drivers if Williams is included. Occassionally, the big teams stumble and then occassionally one of the midfield teams has a really good weekend (such as toyota/trulli this weekend) but on the whole its the rest of the field scrambling for scraps.

It is one of the great frustrations with F1 - but considering this Webber is doing pretty good IMHO.

Dude just isn't in a fast car.

Cheers,
Nik
Jeez, why didn't I just say that?! lol

i love F1, even more than MOTOGP. F1 is not for webber. if he concentrated as much on his driving skills, as he does scrutinising every one elses job he might be better at it.
just talking to the bloke does your head in. stop talking and DRIVE FFS.

p.s hot chicks do not distract webber, his missus is about 16years his senior and the oposite to HOT.

edit, i hope to god he proves me wrong as i thought he was going to be great, some how i doubt it.

That's a bit harsh Cracka - people ask him questions and he gives them answers. Damned if he do and damned if he don't - at least it isn't the same PR s**t most of the other drivers spew forth.

I do agree though that for a Formula 1 driver his missus isn't the usual stunning looker - though I am sure she is a lovely lady...

I hate when people say "machinery is what cost him" blah blah "he doesn't have the right car " blah blah , i remember a certain man with the initial A S who came runner up in the championship in 1993 with the then inferior Mclaren team. Some people have that talent, some people don't , i don't so i keep my a** in a Subaru road car seat smile.

Reminds me of the Top Gear episode in season 10 (not on TV out here yet I don't think) where the hosts compete in a 24 hour event in a diesel 5 series beemer. They stick the Stig behind the wheel and he takes them from last to 1/2 way up the pack, catching up to Vipers... Although I imagine the competition would be a bit stiffer in F1... :ninja:

i am harsh on him , can't help it. had such high hopes watching him overseas b4 f1. thought he was going to be the one. he aint no STONER of the f1 world that's for sure. if he does get up front COUGH COUGH CHOKE. can't see another aussie on the horizon either to be honest. all gone a different path. ryan briscoe had his chance , he chose not to take it and went to the states. ya never know , might get there yet . same as will power.

Hi,

You don't get to drive a Formula 1 car if you don't have talent.

You just don't.
