What are my options?

  Top of Page

Hey,

The mechanic did a TK test on the radiator and discovered that my head gasket is on its way. Probably more almost totally stuffed. What are my options?

I figure i can pay the $2000 - $3000 to get it fixed;
Sell the car to a wrecker;
Buy a new engine and have it installed;
Try sell the car as is.

I dont believe that my 1998 RX Bilstein edition that has done 200000km's is really worth spending that much money repairing as it is probably only worth about $5000 nowadays anyway.

Thoughts?

Andy

Wouldn't I need another ej25? I was told the ej20 wouldn't work as the computer is set up for a 2.5L

You'd need another EJ25. They come pretty cheap from places like Ichiban, but as others have pointed out in the past, who knows how long that one would last.
One option would be to pop a second hand EJ25 in and just sell it before it breaks again tongue

I'm thinking about putting some of that Head Gasket fix stuff into the radiator, patching it up and taking it to a car yard to sell. So far i've been quoted $4400 to fix the thing and i cant find another EJ25 anywhere in perth sad

first question.
are you competent/ able/ willing to pull out/ replace the motor yourself?
THIS is the deciding factor.
'cause if you are then it's a lot cheaper either way.

Right.
Either way it's going to cost you about $3K to get done and keep the car.

if you just want to cut your losses, you might get 2-3k for it if it has rego and is otherwise in good nick
someone else may be willing to do the engine swap or convert it to turbo.

otherweise you could dump a whole heap of cash into it if you really want te keep the car and drop in a H6 or turbo transplant

Honestly, id be worried about the shockies or something else going next. I think i'm probably better off upgrading.

Also, looks like most quotes have come in at around $4000 to repair it.

$4k is very expensive.
shocks can be rebuilt for about $600 all up, or source some from a GTB legacy from import monster for $500

I bought an STi motor, wiring and ECU and full exhaust for only a little more than that...

Am going through a similar issue - big end bearing gone, needs new motor etc etc. Have managed to find one for $1300 and the guys will put it in for $600 (including new fluids, seals etc) so I'll probably go down that route myself... Good luck mate.
