Vik's gen 5 pix and review

  Top of Page

Lads, got back from the Subaru Gen 5 Liberty and new Outback preview. here goes,
1. The build quality is a lot better, more solid feel, interior trimming is better fitted and the fit and finish is not to bad for the $$$. Sadly there is over lapping in the body kit and the chrome trimming around the windows is poorly fitted.
2. Bigger car inside and out then the Gen 4, smaller boot opening and boot space. More room sort off spoils the feel,u feel like u in a Commo or Aurion not a Liberty.
3. The Outback looks good and u know it's true to Subaru, sadly the Gen 5 Liberty looks confused, some people left straight after the cars were unveiled. The rear looks like a Hyundai cross Lexus, side view looks ok, similar to a Aurion and the Front looks like Maxima has mated a Accord. Those headlights make u think ahhh???wtf. Those side mirrors look like Dumbo had his ears transplanted to the car, they're massive, truck size and look sad on the GT.
4.Looks like Subaru have ditched loyal owners and the bloodline of each Generation and gone after new customers cause this is 1 big F++k up and I will not even look twice at buying it, from the people there, most left disappointed, even acouple of sales folk were negative. Sure it's gotten better in safety, technology and quality, the interior is not to bad, I'm sure some people will enjoy it, but we left thinking did we come from a Nissan preview or Hyundai, very confusing to a Subaru fan, now I know what Impreza fans are going through. Keep ur Liberty lads
Prices, Liberty $37.779 for 2.5i man, $40.344 for 2.5i CVT, GT starts from $57.254 man to $63.468 Bspec wagon auto, 3.6 auto is $56.227. Outback 2.5ltr starts $41879 man to $62.107 3.6ltr premium auto.

Good write-up vik. Looking at the pics I have to agree with you about being confused... Those lights look a bit like it's caught down syndrome...
Prices look quite expensive for what you're getting IMO.

You were there last night Vik?  Was looking around to see if i saw any familiar faces but saw none...

Confused is probably the best world to describe what the Lib looks like.  Overall, i think the car doesn't look too bad, esp the GT and think it'll grow on me.  Woulda been good to get more info on performance etc but i'd like to know how the new 3.6L would be like.

I don't mind it.
But so far i don't know if i'll ever upgrade the B4, don't like the Gen 4 or 5 enough.
Although i wounld'nt mind the interior of a Gen 5, reckon they ever make a retrofit! big_smile

Styling wise it's a personal choice, there will be those that love it, but with those huge side mirrors, Toyota Aurion feel interior, longer/wider base, 5 speed auto in a 60k+ car, the 2.5ltr will still struggle to cope with the weight, size and awd, the headlights that look like we save on paint and Metal if we whack these massive cheap looking headlight that almost tickle ur toes, and that cheap plastic chrome around all the windows that are now framed,it's just not Subaru. Don't get me wrong,it's better build, more features, latest safety and still is a good car, debadge it and u'll be like hmmm, what is it meant to be. But the Outback, Bravo Subaru, looks great, and the 3.6ltr is as fast as the auto XT Turbo Foz, it's got that all round Subaru feel and you know what the car is built for. Just my 2 cents worth, alot off people and me left disappointed and confused.

VIK did you go to the Docklands launch? only person i saw was B4Cruiser.. KEV?

i was standing right next to you the whole time lol next to your wife? was going to say hi but then i wasnt sure you remembered me from the BBQ almost a year ago.

I really did not like the look of the new sedan at all, interior was ummm ok, didnt like the pod like radio/sat nav section it protrudes too much.

the trim was nice though.

totally agree the outback is nicer looking though. i think that will be a much better seller than previous years.

and YAY i got a first aid kit lol

I don't think they look too bad, subaru is just keeping up with honda etc, it reminds me of the accord with the shiny bits and the bulkyness... Interior looks awesome though, but i still like Gen3 and Gen4 better over all i think.

I was at Docaster Subaru, they had a black 2.5 Liberty, a Blue GT wag and and Silver Outback 3.6ltr. Gift bag was disappointing, at the Impreza preview we got Cd case, keyring and pen set. I'm doing a test drive soon, good to see the on road changes. What kills me is that rear, WTF r they thinking, surely a Yanky Doodle designed the Liberty, the Outback is really nice.

Mate, No1 was taking any photo's, wasn't sure if it was allowed so no flash was used. I only snapped/reviewed away so u lads get a look and feel before it's release later next month. Like I said, the Gen 5 didn't interest me. Saying that, if u like it, feeling horny about the new direction where Subaru is heading, enjoy it.

Thanks Vik.
I dont think its any more ugly than a GenIII.
If its a good drive and reliable then I can live with the uglies.
I did with our GenIII.
