Users names

  Top of Page

OK.... i know everybody needs to have a unique user name and all.....

But I find it hard to remember everyone's REAL names..... and with some of the user names people choose.. they're longer than a sentence some of them !!.... it's hard to talk to people on a personal level on the forums

Can i suggest, similar to some other sites, that every user is required to enter their REAL name (checked for authenticity/appropriateness by the admins/mods as part of the registration process)

And it is THIS name that is displayed on threads, with their chosen user name following it in brackets

Eg:  thread title... "posted by David (Spinifex)"
...... or maybe even the other way around  "posted by Spinifex (David)"

This would make it that little more friendly, and personal, when replying to other's posts... being able to refer to people by their proper name.

It will also help with searches for members..... if it will search for real name as well as username, for those of us who DO know someone by name, rather than username.

What you guys think?

i suppose if people wanted to use their real names they would have signed in with them (like I did) some people prefer anonimity

fair enough... but why.... this isn't some weird sexual-fetish site.... what would it matter if someone knew your real name?

Sky Pilot wrote:

actually, no... i wasn't.

i'm damn sure that i'd prefer to respond to your posts personally with "bob" or whatever your name is.... rather than have to type in SkyPilot every time I needed to refer to you.....

i thought the whole idea was to build a friendly community, rather than just an anonymous site where nobody knows anyone else, nobody ever meets, nobody ever helps.  If people actually KNOW each other, its far less likely for flame wars to start..... which is what seems to happen in other car forums that are less friendly and less "communal"

Anyway..... I guess that's a "no" then...... fair enough

Nope, don't think this is a good idea either... the premise of it is good, but too gimicky.

Besides, noones ever going to have the same login name.

Re: Users names

I would prefer it in theory- unfortunately it just provides a level of comfort that, whether realistic or not, helps in places where anyone and everyone can see what you write.

I took it one step further! Being WMD and all, people think I exist, they damn near swear by it, but no matter how hard they look no one seems to be able to find where the hell I am! Some even say I am a government conspiracy...

Re: Users names

I can see merit in both situations, I guess at the end of the day, with the current system, if you dont mind people knowing your real name then there is nothing against you signing off with your name (or including it in your siggy)? (and yeah it would make things easier at club meets, cruise days etc...)

well thats my two cents..

Re: Users names

fair enough guys... thanx all for the responses

i guess no means no tongue

i just felt that it would make life a bit easier on the forums, and at club meets & cruises..... and makes things a little more personal and friendly

i think if people DONT want to be personal & friendly.. then they should find another forum where it really doesn't matter that much...... but i felt that Foz (another name I dont yet know !!!) & Joel wanted this site to foster much more openness and friendship than the other popular forums around

i still think it'd be easier to know what people's name's are.... even if they are not real names, but at least an easily identifiable "normal" NAME, rather than some arbitrary nickname that is 3 sentences long!!!

anyway.... enough......

Cheers
Dave

Re: Users names

Well I think it is a point well made though.

In the interests of at least keeping things a little more open and friendly, I shall post my name at the bottom of all responses (that I remember) to make sure that people at least know who I am in a semi reality way.

I respect that Joel has created a site to try and keep things a little different and less hostile than other forums can tend to be, so Ill do my bit. Just dont expect my phone number and measurements!

Cheers,
Joel (yeah, another one)

Re: Users names

I really think its up to each person weather they want to be known by there real name.

I know I post my name from time to time, and in PM's I always sign off with my real name.
And I think thats good enough wink
