I thought they were 215/45/17 from the factory?

Anyway, that size is fine, even better for handling.

can go 225/45 providing the tyre has a stiff sidewall.

correct, but 215 is legally the widest tire you can put on a gen2

I bought a set of 2004 liberty GT rims a while ago (17" 5 spoke, i think these are the ones u r talking about?) they have 215/45s on them, what is the widest tyre i can get on these rims? can i put a 225 on them, and is that
-legal
-safe
-beneficial for handling, or will the tyre roll over more like that or something?
also will it look obvious that the tyre has been put on a thinner rim? has anybody done this on a liberty (i have a 2002RX)? my tyres still have plenty of meat left on them, but when i upgrade i thought maybe i can get wider tyres for better grip?

i've got 225/40's on my 18" wheels and they are only 7" wide.

they are legal, my car is engineered + listed as a modified vehicle with the rta.

since when and says who??

i got my car engineered with 225/45/17s... AND!! my speedo is more accurate than my mates who has 205/40/17s... there really wasn't that much change between my 215/45 and my 225/45 tyres...

the only thing is, my 225s won't fit onto standard struts with the ammount of camber i want to run... they scrub on the strut (the conical bit that holds the bottom of the spring on)

the only reason i can run wider tyres and higher camber, is cos i have coilovers...

but the bottom line is this:
you can run 225 tyres (i can't attest to the legality of them, but who really cares?) so long as you have a wheel alignment right after you fit them to make sure they don't scrub out...

oh, one final thing, if your car is too low they will scrub out on the inner guard... that's why i'm getting mine raised a bit today...

will it hold the road any better - can i drive faster around corners (which is what we all like) or is it not really worth spending the extra cash to get the slightly wider tyres?

also, does anybody know anything about getting a speedo recalibrated or checked? i know i can check it with a gps, but where do i go in adelaide if its out of whack? (non-stock rims/tyres put it out a bit) and does it cost much?

just check it with GPS.

standard size on my wagon was 195/60/15 and i'm running 225/40/18 and it is 100% spot on what it says on the speedo to what i'm doing (GPS)

With what provar has said - it all depends on which state you are in, and whether it is listed as acceptable with the local equivalent of the RTA. SA has about 7 or 8 different laws regarding tyre and rim combinations, one of which is no larger than 2" dia from standard and 1" wider than standard (so if the car has 195/60/15 (is this gen 2?) on the placard, biggest you can go is 215/45/17). There are other laws regarding rolling diameter, etc.
Also, never go by the biggest on the placard. I got done having 17's on my old skyline, despite the placard having 15s and 14s. Mainly because the copper was being a prick, but its something to be wary of.
