Ticking/Fluttering sound from exhaust or engine?

  Top of Page

My liberty has a 2.25" mild steel catback sports system however under load it ticks not sure wether its from the engine or the exhaust.
Its loudest when theres a wall or a car next you as the sound has something to bounce off. I am think maybe the cat or manifold gaskets?

Any help appreciated..

unfortunately i had the same or similar noise in the last liberty i had and it died the death of blown head gasket which will also give you that nice ticking sound under load.
This may not be the case with your car but for the sake of saving a liberty i would check and keep your eye on the    water level just in case.
fingers crossed it is a shitty manifold gasket somewhere mate.

If its started doing since you installed the exhaust, take it back to the shop and get them to check the welds again. Also see if the muffler or piping is vibrating against something.

go back to exhaust shop and get leak test done, especially around headers.
if that all comes back clear, get a long screwdriver, place it on each head/valve cover and stick your ear on the handle, you should be able to hear the ticking resonate through the screwdriver if its lifters.. if so, go to Bursons and get some Nulon Lifter free (ask for TRADE STRENGTH) only Bursons sell it, the usual repco or supercheap will only have retail stuff.

i cant remember if its before or after an oil change but the EJ22's get a bit ticky when the oil is old, and also, the nulon stuff works wonders!

Thanks for the help fellas, the car was owned by a mechanic before me and it runs like a dream.. 170,000 KM on it and he got the exhaust system installed, the thing is.. the whole system is welded from the cat back which is attached to the headers. So the headers would have had to be taken off to weld it all together and maybe they didnt replace the manifold gaskets, which means 17 year old gaskets which have been removed and reinstalled.. They might have crumbled and cracked at someplace on them I think I might go replace them as they are cheap and see what happens?..
