Ticking noise in engine

  Top of Page

Hey have a 94gx n/a and last nite noticed that there is a ticking sound coming from engine gets louder as u drive and on idle, checked few topics and lots of different answers just done an oil change maybe a month ago used shell helix 10w/40 though reading the threads i maybe have used to thin an oil cause i have 332 thou on the clock and have had some leaks though oil levels are still fine, im thinking of doing an oil change to thicker oil.

any ideas? could it be lifters or ???? sounds like its coming from one side only aswell, how much damage could i do driving it aswell its not getting louder just annoying as i only got this car for now cheers

hey mate that happens with my 97 gx only wen i strt it this is caused by movment inside the tapets not enouhg pressure has built up yet because  it takes time for the oil pump too get oil into the rocker box chambers above the tapets its most probably worn stems coz ur car has 332 on the clock witch wont help oil wont make any differnce      ...andy

Hey Andy.
Looks like you may have some helpful info for others out there.
Had to read it 3 times to understand what you were talking about though.
Try some punctuation and spell check - it will make your posts 10x more helpful.
Thankyou

loud injectors? are you serious???

There is no way you could here injectors firing over the engine noise.

It would be the lifters or tappets, Subaru engines are known for this, there is not much you can do about it.
If you have ever heard an 80's Subaru the ticking sound will often be the loudest thing you can hear.

Maybe you should just take a video or get a soundclip. The words "tick" or "knock" could be used to describe so many different issues.

if its ur tappets yu wont do much damage to ur engie but the stems witch run in and out of the inlet valve will keep wearin away thts wat makes the sorta clapping sound ....... dos he noise sound faster when ur revs get higher ???

Hey well update is that I put lifter noise cleaner in it and today the noise has dissapeared though there is some sound coming back it's kinda on and off now though now I have a worse issue since adding the cleaner one of my plug leads keeps falling off or I think keeps getting jumped off by the spark plug please anyone have any ideas of what's going on I have to stop often to put the plug back on it's the same lead all the time when I put it on it's always tight and I don't see how it could just fall off.  Could the spark plug be making it fall off thanks

i dont want to rain on your party or anything, but i'd use some thicker oil and live with it 330+kzs is a job welldone i think from a engine

if your going to throw any more then 100 bucks at it i would be looking at a 2 or 2.5 n/a and dropping it in , heres a link on ebay , tongue they

are pretty cheap these days, run a 20/50w or a 20/60w in her, but your only going to be delaying the inneviatble :S
