The most epic (expensive) and pointless GenI rebuild

  Top of Page

Hey all, am new to the forum and thought I may as well jump on and say G'day. My name is Ian, I live in Bathurst, have rallied an RS Impreza and am currently (and for almost 3 years have been) rebuilding a GenI wagon... Here is a quick Summary

November '02 Buy a 1991 GX Manual Wagon, in "Mushroom" brown, complete with 12 months rego, for $2500... But it has blown airbag suspension, and looks like the owner was pretty happy when braile buttons came out on ATMs.. it is a little bit scratched, everywhere..
30mins after purchase, drop off at Pedders for a spring conversion

Over the next 2 years it overheats/gets abused/and eventually gets towed back from Sydney because I cannot keep it cool, due to the risk of contaminating the oil, I leave water out of it for the next 2 weeks and continue driving it... turns out there was that little oil in it that this was not worth it (less than 2 litres)

Because I could still not kill it I gave up and just ripped the bloody motor out.

It is now going back together with the following mix..
MOTOR
'03 EJ25 bottom end, <30k old, completely balanced to within 1 gram, new genuine rings and bearings
GenII 2.2 heads, rebuilt, flowed and complete with very mild Tighe cams
K&N panel filter
2.5inch cat back Hitech Exhaust
STI Fuel pump

GEARBOX
Heavy Duty Exedy Clutch
'04 Forester Gearbox <30k old, with a conversion to Liberty diff (Forester gears are taller than Liberty, and Liberty diffs are taller than Forester, this is just to get revs down at 100k, and I have the torque to do it.. I hope)

SUSPENSION
'04 Impreza RS sedan Struts, front spring SEATS are cut and welded to bring the front down in line with the back (about 1 inch drop)
Falken Azenis Semi slicks (for now)
GenI RS Turbo wheels

Also have essential dark tint, and a lovely '04 RS Impreza Leather MOMO Wheel..

Grand total >$13k...

In the meantime I have had a Stagea (which F..ing rocked which I bought for $15k..)

He had about $5500 on it.. but when I showed him a quote for a new set of airbags he soon changed his tune...
Forgot to mention previousy as well.. Due to the qualified mechanics that had the first couple of goes at putting the heads on it now has 1/2 holes for the headstuds that have been sleeved back so that the headbolts are going into steel and the alloy is under far less stress (pulled 5 threads out, then pulled helecoils out as well..)
All the pumps, alternator, radiator etc have been either replaced/rebuilt as well. I rebuilt the motor this time, I am not a mechanic, this sems to be the most reliable way to do it!

Now I am rebuilding the box (today after another mechanic stuffed it), the motor is in and waiting for a gearbox so that I can start it!

Regardless of cost at least you know you have a reliable car that will last another 20 years. smile
