Tax return

  Top of Page

I just went to do my tax return and it looks like I have to pay the motherf*cking bastards!!!

Not happy!! I'm going to ask my dad (accountant) to look at it, but I don't think there's anything he can do. Looks like I didn't pay enough tax - I had 2 different jobs over the financial year but I was working the whole time, so I don't get it!

Has anyone else had to pay them before?

mad Hate. The. Tax. Office!!!

Ive only had to pay them once, and that was due to me being a sub-contractor and not quite doing my maths right

yeah i paid them around $3000 last year due to capital gains tax. I was not happy. It meant less mods to the WRX.

But with my current losses on the market i wont be paying that again for a while

:suicide2:That's terrible, and here I am bitching about having to pay them $100...no one should have to pay them anything.

Well, no one except criminals.

I even studied accouting hoping to learn how to avoid paying tax, but with no luck.  I learnt the best you can do is defer it, eventually you have to pay.

Set up a small business and write it off on that, best way is Primary Producer.....haven't met a farmer yet who pays tax. Just set up a vege garden and send your produce to the markets. Have to research the amount of money you need to earn through it to be able to write of all your tax, but it will catch up with you when you retire. Is only applicable to those who earn enough to offset their tax, say +$80,000

But I don't earn much...my partner earned a bit more than me and he still got $465 back. Doesn't make sense.

i think the reason you didn't pay enough tax was because of your second job and the $6000 tax free fresh hold, did you claim traveling between your first job to the second

Just wait until you own a business and cry when you have to pay.

Hi,

Considering this is the 'I pay taxes' pissing contest. I make a tax excise return every Monday, paying now $68.57 a litre.

Shwing.

I don't know much about HECS, but is it worth considering taking out a personal loan (depending on the fees) to pay it out and then just pay the personal loan at a set rate per month?

No not really, the way its meant to work is HECS repayments just come out of your pay like tax does once you earn over 50k or around that, but i never told my work to take the payments out. And the only reason ill have to pay interest on it is because if you owe the ATO money and it isnt paid straight up they charge you interest.

Re: Tax return

tina,

having to pay tax back or getting a refund basically comes down to your employers estimating how much you are going to earn this year, and having 2 jobs makes it difficult as they dont know how much you earn from teh other and vise versa...

Like my boss over estimates and im hoping to get a fair chunk of what i paid back with that and deductions, my mates employer does the same thing and he is getting at least 4g back just from percentage of his wage blah blah.

Having to pay money back to them has nothing to do with the amount you earn, and someone earning more DOES pay more tax throughout the year through PayG deductions from there salary but this DOESNT mean they will need to pay at the end of financial year, it also doesnt mean they will get any money back... it has to do with you need to pay 38% tax but you only paid 32% say, you now owe the government 6% of your wage for that financial year.

basically thank your employers for the $100 you have to pay them and try and get more deductions together for next year

Thanks. I wasn't very clear in my first post; what actually happened was I left one full time job for another. But I worked about 3 or 4 Saturdays for the first job after I left, so for a bit, I did have 2 jobs at once.

Oh well, there's always next year for a tax refund...

Re: Tax return

I think I've got a bill of around $1000 owing to the tax office. Only paid $30 tax last year, because for 51 weeks of it I was paid as a contractor, therefore do my own taxes, and didn't save a cent. Grrr.

Although, my pay in 2006/07 was a bit over $40k, last tax year was only $16k, a heaps big drop, I know. Dunno how I survived.

The ATO website says I can claim 5000km or 12% of the original price of the car, without the need for documentation.

Even though I did about 5500km, I can't be bothered making a false logbook and odometer readings for the sake of 500km, even though I do have a record of every shift I did, thank you invoices.

So, at 69c per km, and for $5000km, I can claim $3450.
12% of original purchase price [ $38000 estimate for new in 99 ] = $4560.

Add to that laundry expenses, $300 max without receipts, and $45 fee for last years return.

It looks pretty good, but yeah, I have to start saving for the end of October, then do my return at the last moment. Hopefully visiting a decent accountant will help a bit.

Re: Tax return

I lied. Just did the etax, and laundry is $150/yr without receipts, but going by my invoices, could only claim about $70. Grrr.

Anyways, thanks to some low income tax offset of $750, I'm only due to pay $185. Not a bad effort. $225 tax for the whole year. That's more than Kerry Packer though. And I was totally honest with my answers.

Sorry Tina, doesn't matter!

If you worked two jobs and claimed the tax free threshold on both, that could be why you underpaid tax.. weird thing is that you can claim travel between two jobs and associated expenses.

I just did mine and I received 1.3k on travel between work(s) and uni alone.

You just have to know what you can claim!

Ha, Ha.....ha. I've met a few, I agree that alot don't make money and have been hitting it tough lately, but my father's mates all drive Mercs, Beemers and Lambo's. They own multi million dollar warehouse's in Brisbane, and own countless apartments and houses in the south east QLD. It's all about the way you play the game, they cheat the tax system throught the protection of being a primary producer. The farm is basically a tax write off for their investments.

I cant say I've had to pay the ATO office yet, I've always got tax money back, this year I almost got 3k back smile , tho I would have got a little less back if my pay was constant through out the year but due to o/t, travel time/km etc I was put in different tax brackets each week so some weeks I would pay heaps of tax others I wouldnt.

When I had 2 jobs at the same time, I only claimed the tax free threshold on one. smile

Anyway, I hadn't done my tax return right - my dad looked at it and showed me where I'd gone wrong. So after all of that, I will actually get a refund!

congrats on the return, tina. spend spend spend!

work just called me to say someone has quit and that i'll be getting 4-5 shifts a week now, instead of 2-4. so good. now i don't have to work as a casual contractor, and will be able to afford to pay the tax bill, plus maybe even get my brakes finally done.
