Tasmanians! I'm headed there in May! Advice needed.

  Top of Page

Hi,

I am staying on the east coast in May, and I was wondering where you would think is one of the better places to stay? It will be strictly business, so no need for roses on the bed etc, just looking for internet access and proximity to decent restaurant facilities.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Nik

I did a lap of tassie two years in a row in winter 05 an 06, its a fricken great place. I found there was heaps of accommodation available if ya out of high season, which ya will be, and it was all pretty good. A lot of the east coast is more "motel and fish an chip shop" country than flash hotel an restaurant, but like i said it was all good. St Helens, Bicheno, Coles Bay an Swansea are probably the major towns with a range of accommodation options ie: caravan parks, motels and B an B's. Internet access, mmmmm, not a lot down the coast when i was there, but that was 2-3 years ago.

Hi,

Thanks for the information mate. Much appreciated.

I am headed there for a spirit mission. I have a full three days to spend at Lark Distillery, exchanging info... Mainly me asking questions, and them answering.

So my base will be Hobart, or close there too.

I will need to head to just north of Devenport to see the third of the distilleries penned in for my trip.

As for internet access, just had a thought, my nextG wireless should work as per usual over there, no?

Cheers,
Nik

Hobart = everything ya need, just like any other capital city i guess, it was only out of town i found tassie a little tiny bit behind the times (no offense meant, they still fill ya car for ya at the servo!) I'd imagine ya nextg should be fine, didnt have it when i was down there, failing that there's always wifi from macca's on ya telstra mobile account if ya desperate.

Hi again,

Have checked, and NextG is more than capable down there, would you believe certain parts of Tasmania enjoy the fastest internet speed in Australia?

Any other input from some six fingered Tasmanians would be much appreciated!?

Cheers,
Nik

You will be fairly limited in any sort of Internet access at hotels etc along the east coast.  The bigger places like Coles Bay, Bicheno and Swansea would be your best bet.  Might have to ring around.  Coles Bay has the more upmarket accommodation - if your that way inclined. Like Freycinet Lodge etc.  I stayed at  a place called the Edge of the Bay and it was awesome.  Sweet views of the Hazards and right on the water.

NextG is alright down here, I can pull some fairly decent speeds using my phone as a modem.

If your staying mostly in Hobart, you'll be right.

Now the comment that we have the fastest internet speeds - I dunno.  We have a fairly bad choke hold on the internet speed, otherwise known as Telstra.  Only one exchange in both Launceston and Hobart have ADSL2 DSLAMS, and they are pretty much maxed out.  I had it once, but moved just beyond the boundary and had to kiss 24Mbit goodbye.

If your coming down in May, be prepared for some of the sh!ttiest weather you'll ever see.  It has already snowed this year.

Definitely take the time to get out on the roads, the coastal drives are pretty awesome.  With a bit of snow about a drive up the Hartz Mountains is a heap of fun.

Let me know if you need any info and i'll help you out.

Now, we may have two heads, but calling us six fingered is below the belt! :victory:

all other states are the future compared to tassie...

as for 3g, you should have no problems within, Hobart, Burnie, and Devenport

Or anywhere.  NextG is rolled out all over the state.  Obviously, with any NextG network, you have to be within a decent range of the cell to get your high-speed internet.  Regional areas might be a tad slow.

Hi Shnad,

Thanks for the terrific post. Most helpful.

As for that comment, Tasmania has the fastest speeds in the southern hemisphere, only in one suburb though. They are still running trials in which the internet is fed down power lines - super quick!

Brendan: The top Australian distilleries are all located in Tasmania, in terms of spirit they are ahead of every state in Australia. Definitely kill the poofta capital of OZ.

No problems, Nik.

You are dead right, the broadband over powerline project did get some pimping internet speeds.  But the Aurora pulled the pin because of 'costing' and has switched focus to fibre.  Also, as we predominantly have overhead power lines it could never get rolled out because of the interference it would cause.  A couple of suburbs got the trial, one newly developed with full underground power services and the others overhead.

And not only do whoop the mainlands ass in spirits, but we make a bloody good beer too.  Definitely try and get on a Cascade or Boags brewery tour.

Hi,

I will be making a B-Line for MooBrew! Love the stuff!

Any of the smaller breweries you would recommend? Right coast preferred...

Hazards Ale is bloody good.  Its brewed by Wineglass Bay Brewery.  Well worth a taste.  You can get it on tap in Hobart at the Ocean Child.  Dunno if you can do a brewery visit but its located in Bicheno.

MooBrew is a pretty good beer too.  The new Morilla museum will be opening in a few years, should be a massive eye-opener.
