by Dane on 05-06-07 11:21 AM be careful when buying the chains, they can quite easily damage your rims (with the way they self tighten etc). i would invest in some cheap rims and put the chains on them if i were you... |

yeah I think that'll be the best bet ... though then I have to change all my wheels over each trip to the snow lol
oh the hassles of having nice big rims |

by Dane on 05-06-07 11:36 AM yer but the hassel is worth it. watch out if your car is low too, because if there is not much clearance between your rims and your guards the chains will hit. but unless we get a really good season, you probably wont even have to use chains |

yeah that's why I'm probably not going to put the super super lows back on the car (as the body sits just over the top of the rubber) a few years ago was the first time I have been to the snow and they were fitting chains to 4wds (went up I was driving my friends CRV cos she didn't like the idea of driving in actual snow) was awesome, but yeah may not need to fit them at all. YAY for having a 4wd now |

how do you go fitting the chains, well sides not actually having to use them. I'd prefer to spend the money on the chains (will most probably have them a while) and know they wont scratch my rims than take chances with hired ones if I actually have to put them on.... that is unless you put towels under each of the chains so it doesn't rub on the rims

by WhiteRX on 05-06-07 02:01 PM I hired chains for mine, it's cheap, usually around $20 for a weekend. Mind you I only have 16's....

by ChrisGT on 25-06-07 07:42 PM I notice for NSW snowfields you need to carry chains when driving a 2WD vehicle. 4WD vehicles are exempt from this, so I'm assuming this means AWD as well?

Yeah it applies to AWD also. Most mountains have the following guidelines when it comes to chains. 2WD - must carry chains at all times. 4WD/AWD - not needed for day trips but usually have to be carried if you are staying overnight. The rules change depending on weather patterns e.t.c. and may even vary between NSW and VIC. |

by Ratos on 25-06-07 08:40 PM In NSW you don't need to carry chains on AWD or 4WD vehicles.

Re: Subies at the snow |

|
by AshR on 25-06-07 09:54 PM you're partially right, on nearly all days, 2wd will have to carry chains, some days awd and 4wd don't have to carry chains. but this is only for day trips.

by Ratos on 25-06-07 10:07 PM Chains are definitely not required for AWD in NSW even if you are there overnight in NSW :scout:

Goes something like this...... 8 guys rent tarago for a trip to the thredbo for 3 days. Weather forecast indicates that we should have taken our umbrellas and gone on a bush walk. Thought we would be smart and rented a house that had a garage which meant we only needed a day pass when we would be there for 3. Thought we were pretty cluey. Sometime on the saturday night the rain stops and the snow starts. 20cm in the village between midnight and dawn. No chains and, as the driveway was steep enough to be is own ski run, we need them. Place had a heated driveway but that wasn't even making a dent in it. Run down to servo to get the only pair of chains that will fit the car. There was only one there because a lot of people thought like we did. Looked jealously at people driving past in their AWD subarus. Cutting a long story short, we assumed the car was front wheel drive (after 35 beers the night before no one thought to look for a drive shaft :alcoholic ) but couldn't get enough leverage to fit the chains properly.....so need to roll car slightly (well we didn't but again 35 beers were talking :alcoholic ) and needless to say finger got caught between chains and tyre..... Freed oneself painfully, got out on to street only to discover, that car was RWD. Repeated above process only this time in the snow, not in the garage. Far less enjoyable in the snow. Also happened to be the night a storm struck wollongong and a 7 hour drive became 11. |
