Subies at the snow

Hey guys, just wondering where I'd go to get a set of chains?

looking to buy them (have 18" x 8"s) just wondering if they'll fit chains or it'll be easier to get some 2nd hand wrx wheels or something like that in a 16" for the chains?

Supercheap auto, or any good camping / 4wd shop.

be careful when buying the chains, they can quite easily damage your rims (with the way they self tighten etc). i would invest in some cheap rims and put the chains on them if i were you...

yeah I think that'll be the best bet smile ... though then I have to change all my wheels over each trip to the snow lol

oh the hassles of having nice big rims

yer but the hassel is worth it. watch out if your car is low too, because if there is not much clearance between your rims and your guards the chains will hit. but unless we get a really good season, you probably wont even have to use chains

yeah that's why I'm probably not going to put the super super lows back on the car (as the body sits just over the top of the rubber)

a few years ago was the first time I have been to the snow and they were fitting chains to 4wds (went up I was driving my friends CRV cos she didn't like the idea of driving in actual snow) was awesome, but yeah may not need to fit them at all. YAY for having a 4wd now

I have been to the snow heaps with my lowered GTB.

I have never had to fit chains.

I always just hire them, easy and cheaper.

how do you go fitting the chains, well sides not actually having to use them. I'd prefer to spend the money on the chains (will most probably have them a while) and know they wont scratch my rims than take chances with hired ones if I actually have to put them on.... that is unless you put towels under each of the chains so it doesn't rub on the rims tongue

I hired chains for mine, it's cheap, usually around $20 for a weekend. Mind you I only have 16's....

The beautiful part is that I accidently forgot to return them. I arrived back in melbourne, had a rest, popped the boot to start unpacking and had chains staring up at me.
Still got em. Yay, chains for $20!!!

I notice for NSW snowfields you need to carry chains when driving a 2WD vehicle. 4WD vehicles are exempt from this, so I'm  assuming this means AWD as well?
I wasn't sure if the exemption was for full size 4WDs like Landbruisers/Pajeros only. Can anyone confirm?

Thanks.

Yeah it applies to AWD also.

Most mountains have the following guidelines when it comes to chains.

2WD - must carry chains at all times.
4WD/AWD - not needed for day trips but usually have to be carried if you are staying overnight.

The rules change depending on weather patterns e.t.c. and may even vary between NSW and VIC.

In NSW you don't need to carry chains on AWD or 4WD vehicles.

The only reason that you actually need them is for when there is ice on the road. Snow actually provides traction - watch the rally of sweden sometime - they avoid the first cars tracks and hit the snow. Usually its because snow has fallen on top of the ice. so the exposed sections of track provide less traction than the snow.

Once a few cars have broken the ice that is frozen to the road, I reckon even a 2wd vehicle may not need chains.

The instructions in the handbook are pretty good, except they make a comment that you should try to avoid putting chains on the car in the first place! You can do so much damage to the car its ridiculous - the rotors, the pads, the wheels, the springs, the shocks.....let alone the bodywork!

Don't forget that you only need a pair of chains as they are only required on one axle.

To tell you the truth.....come to NSW and forget the chains.

As for NZ, if you look at the snow reports they tell you whether AWD need chains. Buses sometime required to fit DOUBLE chains.

Re: Subies at the snow

you're partially right, on nearly all days, 2wd will have to carry chains, some days awd and 4wd don't have to carry chains. but this is only for day trips.

over night trips all vehicals have to carry chains regardless of 2wd or 4wd status.

with awd and 4wd you only have to put chains on the front wheels. 2wd you have to put chains on the "drive" wheels

hope that helps you out, usually if you check with the chain hire place near the moutain they'll tell you if you if you'll need chains on the day trip or not smile

Chains are definitely not required for AWD in NSW even if you are there overnight in NSW :scout:

Reading up on it they seem more concerned that you put the right amount of anti-freeze in the engine. The random chain inspections only seem to occur when you actually need them. Link to RTA below.

I discovered the importance of chains one year when we actually needed them when I also discovered (after nearly losing a finger) that a early 90's tarago is actually rear wheel drive.....who would've thought? :Dntknw:

Thats correct for NSW's.

In Vic all cars need to carry chains.
Unless you are doing a day trip to buller, then AWD and 4X4 cars sometimes don't need to carry chains.

Re: Subies at the snow

ive just come back from the snow (mount hotham) as today was a joke (hardly any lifts open.. it was like a blizzard)... the road was icy with a layer of snow on top... i still did not need to fit chains on!..
The lib handled great.. did not slip once... not up or down the mountain.... xenons in snow are decent.. but i wish i had some yellow fog lights for the conditions we encountered...

As for chains... if i were to buy some... id be getting diamond pattern chains.....
i too have never needed to fit them!.

Goes something like this......

8 guys rent tarago for a trip to the thredbo for 3 days. Weather forecast indicates that we should have taken our umbrellas and gone on a bush walk. Thought we would be smart and rented a house that had a garage which meant we only needed a day pass when we would be there for 3. Thought we were pretty cluey.

Sometime on the saturday night the rain stops and the snow starts. 20cm in the village between midnight and dawn. No chains and, as the driveway was steep enough to be is own ski run, we need them. Place had a heated driveway but that wasn't even making a dent in it.

Run down to servo to get the only pair of chains that will fit the car. There was only one there because a lot of people thought like we did. Looked jealously at people driving past in their AWD subarus.

Cutting a long story short, we assumed the car was front wheel drive (after 35 beers the night before no one thought to look for a drive shaft :alcoholic ) but couldn't get enough leverage to fit the chains properly.....so need to roll car slightly (well we didn't but again 35 beers were talking :alcoholic ) and needless to say finger got caught between chains and tyre.....

Freed oneself painfully, got out on to street only to discover, that car was RWD. Repeated above process only this time in the snow, not in the garage. Far less enjoyable in the snow.

Also happened to be the night a storm struck wollongong and a 7 hour drive became 11.
