2nd gear around a bend I plant it and all fours lose traction, i slide sideways down a 3 lane road for 50metres and end up going up a driveway/gutter backwards stopping 1 foot from a brick wall.

Old pacific highway, it started to sprinkle... understeer central.

Set of lights in the rain.... I plant it and bounce off the limiter for a short time while an old lady in a car next to me drives past me like i'm standing still.

AWD is overrated!

Hi,

Just cruised through a very boggy paddock, while old mate in his 4x4 ute got bogged behind me. I didn't attempt to pull him out, but it was pretty funny.

The best bit was when our other mate rocked up to pull him out...

"So Nik's grandad car got through here, and you didn't Rocko?"

big_smile

I was probably just lucky, but by golly gosh darn tootle pips it was funny.

Cheers,
Nik

I changed them a week after I nearly went into the wall. Only had 22k on them (potenza re050a's)

They weren't THAT bad though, still a fair way to go before they past the tread marker. Must just get really **** after a certain point

I can honestly say that I have only ever really had good experiences with AWD big_smile I have found that loosing traction and sliding is very controllable, I can say too that the grip these things offer is pretty impressive, I remember having some "fun" following a mate who was driving his Mazda 626 Turbo which had been lowered, around larger sweepier bends I was pushing a bit to keep with him but come the tighter slower stuff and I could own that thing hard big_smile

AWD is nearly as good as RWD tongue haha

awd is awesome, especially if you've got an lsd in the back.

its saved me a few times. like people that forget to turn their indicators off, and drive straight instead. take on flat chat and you know your not gonna bag em up on the spot of go straight.

had a few close calls though, one minute its oversteering, then it understeers and the gutter gets very close lol

Be careful guys, never over estimate AWD.

on Monday i was coming into a round about in the right hand lane.. i was late for work and it had been raining the night before.. i started to turn as i hit the apex and the car just went straight.. so there i was almost full lock to the right, heading towards the gutter and sliding infront of the car next to me...HOLYFVCK i say. The car suddenly gets grip and throws me back into my seat as i head off in the correct direction..

PS: im running almost brand new Federal 595 SS tyre's.

we have awesome traction off the line and through some corners but if we surprise the car with a hard turn in the wet.... the car will surprise us.

I could never drive any other car after driving a Subaru though, even the brand new Honda Accords get massive wheel spin in the wet taking off..

Was it really wet? Kinda sounds like an aquaplane to me. Ether that, or your new tyres might not like the wet so much???

I like the AWD and im sure it has saved me going into the odd bush on the side of the road, but it's a bit too easy for me to get a little under steer, over steer, under steer brown trouser action (even when the rubber was new) when pushing it a little harder than normal.

Still, after driving a new lancer vrx  (wow, they finally made and alright car!!) and a new i30.. *richo hugs liberty*

Coming very recently from a rwd HSV to AWD, I've got to say that the traction difference is amazing.

As soon as I got it, I took it for a run through the dandenong's on a damp foggy morning. I didn't go stupid, due to the amount of blind corners up there, but I can tell you that if I had of taken the corners anywhere near as hard in the RWD, the tail of the HSV would have been beside me. Whereas the Liberty took it in it's stride and just cruised out of every corner like it was a walk in the park.

Obviously AWD still has it's limits, but so far they appear way above any RWD with reasonable power I've ever driven.

AWD does not compensate for retarded, dickless driving.

It's just the limitations for an AWD car are a tad higher than its RWD/FWD counterparts.

Drive like a dickhead in any car and you will come unstuck......eventually.

Hi,

The only difference is, in an AWD you're probably going to be going alot faster when you do crash.

Nik

That could have happened in any car regardless of where the drive is sent... If the front wheels start sliding there's really not that much you can do about it except wait for them to come back.

mine is normally

Me: Righteo, so, what can this thing do
*car says no and coughs in my face*
Me: oh $h!t, oh $h!t, oh $h!t
*car lol*
Me: So, thats what it can't do....

AWD (subaru being the only AWD i have experienced) seems to push the line between fun and panic a bit further up the scale and tends to be very much 'this side of the line is safe' vs 'this side of the line is not so safe'

NO car power delivery system is bad driving, condition proof. Fwd rwd, awd 4wd. ALL are subject to the laws of physics. You enter a corner too fast and you're screwed, and of sentence. The different power delivery methods change to some degree the WAY you can tackle a corner but, in the end, each corner has it's own limits. People in general have a stupid preconception that a Subaru AWD can do "anything" that is a stupid idea and one people should rectify unless they want to wrap themselves around a tree - but and this is just my opinion - these morons SHOULD wrap themselves around a tree cause it gets them off the roads that I have to drive on too.

Awd, Yes it DOES HELP - significantly - but, at the end of the day, it's still only a car and it's only a road. YOU have been trained to drive, YOU are supposed to have a brain, If YOU can't keep yourself under control, driving within your car and your limits then noone to blame but yourself. One thing to remember too. Sliding on a corner can happen for a host of reasons and some can't be mitigated. Even the best rally drivers on earth with the best handling road cars money can buy can come unstuck if they overcook a corner.

*End Rant*
