Steering Wheel shake on braking.

  Top of Page

Hi All,

I just recently bought a 2004 Lib GT wagon, 1 previous owner with 74,000 clicks on it. The car is in great condition and i recently did a road test from Sydney to Brisbane. The only major issue i have is when breaking hard at a decent speed, the steering wheel shakes. Does anyone have any clue what would be causing this or is this a common issue?

Thanks
Bob

You may have warped disks.  You can get that in any car when the brake disks get to there minimum thickness.
Have the disks been changed since the car was sold?

Thanks for the response. No they are the original discs. Would you recommend seeing a brake specialist?(i live in Sydney) I think the brakes are a little soft as well. I have a impreza GX and the brakes are much more responsive in that than the Liberty.

Given you have a couple of concerns and I'm guessing you're not mechanically experienced, I would take it to a workshop that does brakes. They're fairly important, lol

If you have warped discs it's most likely that you'll be able to have the discs machined - basically they put it in a machine that skims some metal off to make it flat again, similar idea to a lathe. Shouldn't cost you too much, I think retail it's something like $20 a disc (never paid for it, sorry). Given that your car is fairly new you shouldn't need replacement rotors, there should be plenty of meat left on them.

If your pedal is soft you might benefit from a fluid change and having the brake lines bled properly, to make sure there isn't any air in them. It's also possible that you have a weak spot in a line somewhere, like a hernia. When you press the pedal some of the effort goes into inflating this herniated spot rather than on working the brakes, so you lose a lot of feel... and if it bursts you have no brakes.

Either way a brake specialist will be able to sort it out for you smile

You guess it subnub, i'm mechanically useless.

Thanks for the info, i wouldn't have a clue otherwise. At least now i'll sound like i know what's going on once i speak to a brake specialist.

Many thanks
Bob

Not 100% sure on this but cant also having bad wheel alignment also cause shudderring when braking. How is your wheel alignment?

I had the wheels aligned a few days after i bought it when i had new rubber fitted. Which is a good thing as the back wheels were aligned in the opposite direction to the front.

Hi,

Generally a bad alignment will show off braking though, if it is only under brake, and more noticable at higher speed, I'd put my dollars on warped discs. Good idea to get it looked at ASAP, as it can cause troubles further down the parts line.

Cheers,
Nik

I've got it booked in to have the discs straightened and the lines bleed as well, in a few days. Hopefully that's all that it will need.

mine does this too, so when i press the brake from like 70-20 it shudders and when i stomp on it the brakes lock! so i am guessing the abs isn't working - and yes i checked the fuse.

ive got new bushes on order as some of them are worn, so perhaps its warped discs or the suspension.

did you end up getting new discs?

In response to my issue with steering wheel shutter a few weeks ago. It was warped discs as advised , so thanks heaps for the feedback fellas. I haven't had a chance to test the problem under any hard braking, due to running in some new pads. But so far the problem hasn't reoccurred since having the discs machined. Apparently ABS and brake lines all checked out fine.
