Spraying rims(HP's)

  Top of Page

I went to get my rims sprayed at a panel beater and was told they cant spray them unless they have been sand blasted... is this true?? the rims are 18 inch shadow chrome HP's. i want to spray them the just a bit darker then shadow chrome. i am also thinking of going full black. If i choose to go black i will try DIY but i wud prefer the shadow colour... i have also read numerous threads of painting rims but couldnt find my answer...

Opinions??

thanks in advance..

Not 100% on this but id say they would need to be sand blasted to get all the dirt/brake dust/oil or what ever off them, and too rough the surface up a bit (so the paint sticks properlly)

You would need a sand blast too do that cause just cleaning them wouldnt do a good enough job and the paint would just flake...

Anyone correct me if im wrong, but it sounds logical to me..

Hi,

To do it properly sand blasting is essential.

You can get shadow chrome in Premium Multona spray cans, so you can DIY that. You can DIY any colour you want if you use the German paint manufacturers - found at any graffiti shop.

Thanks for the replies guys. i dont really want to do DIY because usually they end up getting fixed by a proffesional and costing more than it origannly should.lol

i just got my car repaired and the panel beater told me he will spray them for 150 bucks all four. i know thats cheap and had him spray rims before and had no probs with them, its just now he says these ones need to be sandblasted. roughly how much would it cost to sandblast does anyone know??

or maybe ill rub them back myself and tell him to spray them....

if you are trying top cut corners or find possible cheaper ways to go just remember "measure twice, cut once". meaning if you do it yourself there is a  chance youll save money but if you stuff up then youll have to spend more money to fix it, and if you take it to a pro they'll do it properly which will save it having to be re done and if they do screw up they will replace the rims.

personally i would just get it professionally done to ensure its done right the first time. If you can get onto Suprauc he may be able to spread more light on the situation.

but thats just my 2 cents. and i know your only looking at way to go about it atm, but when i prefer to get pro's to do certain work even if it will cost a smidge more.

Be carefull although German spray paint is usually a good mix it is not nearly as durable as the paint the panel beater will use.....remember the road contains lots and lots of little rocks. 150 for all 4 and approximatly 30 a piece ofr sand blasting is the way to go.........or just leave them as is.
