You can do either aftermarket or factory ecu.
I repin the ecu plug to run single turbo ecus. You need to use a V3/4 ecu if you retain the auto trans. If you want to go manual you can use an earlier ecu. If you want to go manual and single turbo I would recommend you buy a half cut and do it all at once.

Cheap would be 93-6 WRX, fast would be V3/4 STi.

Go see chiptorque, they did a Ezyflash for me and it was perfect (1st time they had done it, im presuming they saved a file).  I turned to autronic to get a more detailed tune and delete the air flow meter.

Yes you can rewire the ecu for a V3/4 ecu, I have done it many times. But if you want to be able to tune the ecu as well then you should just get an aftermarket ecu wired in. If it is done correctly the auto computer will be happy. If it is done by a chimp you will have no end of problems.
