Science related jobs?

  Top of Page

Hey bit of a long shot but does anyone here work in a science related job? im just finishing up my first year of medical science (hopefully going onto drug research - pharmacology) and so far we have concluded that we will probably end up running underground speed labs tongue because i cant see a whole heap of oppertunities.
hence im asking around to be proved wrong. I've heard different things (bad pay, bad hours etc and then the opposite)

Yep im aware its a car forum but i figured id give it a shot. thanks, palmer.

hey mate,
im just finishing up my bachelor of science at uq (biomed & genetics)
i've found it's basically a toss up between industry and academic jobs..

industry = more $$, but less intellectual freedom
academic = less $$, but more intellectual freedom

unfortunately australian gov't hasn't really prioritised funding for science, compared to say the u.s. or u.k., so heading over there would be much better $$-wise, which is what a lot of graduates tend to do..

but im thinking many new opportunities are due to open up in the near future..

I'd say if ur keen on getting into the industry side of things - which is a pretty huge field in pharmacol (massive drug co.'s and whatnot) - definitely try to hook up some lab experience, so keep ur eye out for summer projects or scholarships that are offered by some companies for undergrads.. (great way to get ur foot in the door)

but yeh, with regards to ur q, i think it just depends on the place ur working at.. say if ur working at a pathology lab which have to be operating 24/7 for diagnostics, ur shifts can be pretty terrible, and you prolly only get something like $20-25/hr

but say working at a drug company, im sure the hrs wouldn't be too demanding, seeings the development of a single drug usually takes at least 10yrs..

if ur looking for $$, go overseas.

Thanks mate, for the amount of work being put into this degree  compared to some others 20-25/hr really doesn't sound too appealling especially considering i have no plans on moving overseas just yet... will definitely need to think this one over.

well medicine/dentistry/pharmacy is always an option with science

If you look good with a pole up your arse and think your s**t doesn't stink and love looking down on other people go the academic route.  99% of what an academic does aint worth a pinch of sh!t the other 1% is owned by the Uni/company they work for.

If you have a clue, want to do something constructive for your fellow man and laugh like a muther fcuker at nerds (i.e. academics) than get an industry job.  100% of the work you do is useful and when you do your job well, bonuses/shares/options come a flowing back at ya.

Just my experience from working in the industry.

Have you furthered your education since yr 10? I got a mate earning good money (bought a house at 20yrs old), has shares etc, but he's working at factory doing s**t hours. Nothing since year 12 so it's likely he'll be stuck in s**tty roles for the rest of his life. And he's got a mortgage to pay off now so he can't exactly drop his good pay for a lesser paying job to have time to study.

Hey all thanks for the replies, always intended on going into industry/research just trying to see if its even possible these days to earn an alright living i mean im doing a B. Science degree so im competing against people with B. Medical science and B. Biomedical science not to mention advanced science degrees. Realistically i could say i could probably do honours but getting into medicine, no deal. thanks again.
