Road legal race/rally spec upgrade

  Top of Page

Now i know this isnt a liberty, but i find this forum alot more helpful and  more personal that rex net (im sure alot of u are members aswell)

so here goes

i recently bought a 98 gc8 wrx (classic shape) with the intention of making it a race/rally car that is road legal. so far to get it up to scratch (blue slip) ive personally fixed leaking power steering pump, re-booted 2 cv's, replaced boot release cable (alost the most annoing to fix), threw in some sti back lights and tidied all the wiring up. Having the RX on the road and this in the garage is a great presure free way to learn about subarus in general. prior to this i have never had the balls to dissasemble any bits of the liberty's engine OR EVEN SERVICE IT MYSELF!

once blue slip is obtained, i plan on giving it huge service entirely myself, and if u want post up all the diy's (wrx is essentially the same as a legacy). Seeing as this is my first turbo car i plan on learning everything about it, how it drives, how power is delivered, how the boost works and the limitations to grip and braking (in a controlled environment obviosly) before i plan to do anything major to it ie spend bit dollars.

so when the funds allow me (many months) im thinking something along the lines of:

  V7 sti engine with acvs
V6 sti DCCD gear box, diff, driveshafts
  Bilstein suspension
Brembos and rear hubs from V7 sti

i just have a few questions...
do both GC and GD sti use R180 driveshafts and are they capable of handling say a max of 240kw?
is the GC RA gearbox able to handle this power or is it worth getting 1st to 4th helicals?
  is DCCD worth its price?
whats the max power a tmic (v7) can safely handle?

Any considerations, opinions, advice, 2cents are gladly welcomed

Also would u like pics or is a GC8 generally not ineresting??

cheers Nick

sounds like a good project but if you want a dedicated track car, have you looked into buying a race spec car under the 'rally/race'. Chances are, for same money, you could get a gc8 sti already with all the gear and ready to race. Plus as a dedicated track car, you can have full roll cage and all that stuff that would make it difficult to own a race spec car that is also road registered. With a cams licence, you can drive the car to and from the track and also to the shop for work on it, etc.

Post up the pics!

I know ive seen those cars, plenty on trade car view, for next to nothing. I dont hav the intention of building a permanent racecar, id love it as a weekend drive with some races in mind, ultimately targa tasmania but i guess ill just have to see where this project will take me. i think ill get more enjoyment and satisfaction if i do it myself, plus ill get to learn so much about these engines. the way i see it i cant make it any worse, old owner had a boost controller that has a peak boost reading of 19psi yet blows no smoke, so should last me awhile till i get my act together. btw dont have a cams license or competed in any form of track days etc, so i am really really knew to this

The only GC8s that came with an R180 rear were v5 and up STi RA models - the standard STi was just a regular R160 4.44 rear. Not too sure on the GD series though.
Whether R160 and standard gearbox can stand up to 240kw, that depends on your driving style and what sort of rallying you're planning on doing - having less traction on dirt is an advantage in that respect since there is less stress put through the driveline when launching.
I've seen people suggest a GD series STi top mount will handle quite a lot of power, but a front mount would do the job much more efficiently. You should also consider oil cooling. I've seen some people go front-mount and mount an oil cooler under the scoop in place of the top mount which seems like a good use of space.

i dont plan on doing hard launches, idealy circuit style stuff, tarmac rally, and if im able to a bit of gravel rally. 1st to 4th helicals as proclaimed by PPG "can handle upto 400hp". im trying my hardest to ge tthe right information the first time so i wont have to do things twice and spend twice the moneys. ie do i waste money on RA box with DCCD of do i just uprgrade the standard box i have now with 1st to 4th helicals? will R160's do the job...these exist but do they claim to do what they say http://www.driveshaftshop.com/import-ax … l-years... for $1200 (for onlythe rear pair) i sure bloody hope so! i just need food for thought and really  really wanna avoid buying shit that will become useless once i upgrade in the forever distant future.

cheers fellas...also would service diy's be of any value here or they best kept for rex net or similar?

As someone who did this sort of thing without appropriate advice, I suggest you find someone who has already done it. So go to race meetings and rallies and find people there with a similar car. Don't be afraid to ask, most people who do that sort of thing are happy to help out and tell you what they did and where they went wrong. This is the best place to get advice, from people who are actually doing what you want to do.
