Road bike's.

  Top of Page

Well, i've been thinking about getting one for a while now.
For some reason they've started to be really appealing to me.

What would you riders recomend in a cheap starters bike, I know SFA about these things, what i do know is, V-twins sound sexy.

Any help?

I've also thought about this but i'd rather put the money into my car.
Bike+License+rego+insurence and all the other cr@p, my car would nearly be finished to my needs.

Re: Road bike's.

ok think of this spend 30k on your subi = 10sec
and this: of the shelf bike 15k = 10sec

but it all depends on what u want, always keep in mind your first bike u will drop wether it in the driveway or down the road (hope not down the road it hurts)

in vic now the L.A.M.S (learner approved motorcycle scheme) system has just come in: so its about the power to weight ratio. its the same with NSW
eg:
v-twin 650 is in 2-stroke 250 is out.

just promise one thing dont b like everyone else n get a CBR250RR like every one else on their L's (its like driving a wrx with a cannon)

and if u get your L's after 3 months u can get your P's and if u have full car licence u dont need to display P's (but still restricted to LAMS and no pillion)
also .00 BAC after the first 12months of P's u can get any bike and take a pillion but still .00 BAC

roadbike = death.

dirtbike = broken bones.

its not the bike rider thats always the reason behind a bikers death/injury, more often than not its another motorist that hasnt seen them.

I wouldn't ever mix Alcohol and a bike.
I've had  a fair amount of experience ride pushies, i realise there's a difference. But wouldn't the skills i have developed from riding freestyle, maybe lessen the chance of me dropping a bike?
Billsy, I've ridden pushies through traffic without brake's and at stupid speeds.  They don't have to see you, so long as you see them wink.

What would you recommend as far as first bike?
what'sthe go as far as engine's?
I.e, do the make i4's and v-twins, i really got nfi as far as that's concerned.

what'sa decent brand, In the jap market.
I know of Honda and Yamaha. Are there any others worth noting. Out of those two what are the major difference's that can be applied to all there bike's (If there are indeed any.)?

Thanks for your help.

I used to ride when I was young and stupid and would now never contemplate riding on the traffic laden roads we have nowdays.

Re: Road bike's.

ok ive had 2 crashes both in st.kilda and only 12months and 2days appart freaky yeah?

anyz first time f**ked my leg (didnt break dont know whats wrong with it)

second time full sholder reco.

but neither was my fault
car ran a red light in the sholder crash,

n the other some bitch turned into me at a T intersection

so its 99.9% of the time someone else

as for the type of bike i would say in the 250cc range honda VTR250, or a huyosung GT/GTR250, both vtwins the huyosung is cheap but a good learner bike all digital dash etc pretty good bike for 250cc i never did a 250 i went straight to the RVF400 then before the crash it had like i said earlier the VTR1000 engine >smile it was stupid amout of power in such a small bike.

Hi Moto,

I don't doubt your comment at all. But the simple point of it is, you always get hurt. It doesn't matter if it was the other persons fault when you can't work for three months, can't walk again, or can't breathe again.

Paul: Your comment that 'they don't have to see you, you just have to see them' better be a joke.

Cheers,

Re: Road bike's.

but personaly im a fan of twins or V4's as i like the crack and the rumble (hence y i like the boxer engine)

thats my shoulder after the opp at the alfred.
they did a good job to fix me up was in there over night thats all

but they had to wait 2weeks for the swelling to go down before they could really work out how bad (14screws/1rod/alot of wire and plates)
but i still love bikes n saving for a new one (HONDA VTR1000SP-2) look s**t happens dont let it detur u, u can fall from a ladder or chair n do more damage.

as long as your sensable which most u guys r most of the time wink your fine

here is a link to a melb group they deal in learner deals it will give u an idea but huyosung is pretty good bang for buck in 250 range:    http://www.sumoto.com.au/

Mate I've been on bikes in one form or another pretty much all my life, BMX, road, both motor and pedal, XR dirt bikes and a whole bunch of mountain bikes. I had an RG500 for a month and sold it because I knew it would be the end of me and to be totally honest with you I'd rather be pinning my DH mountainbike down a tree lined single track and 75km/h than ride any kind of bike on the roads these days. You can be the safest, most cautious, rider with great bike handling skills but it's the car you don't see, or as mentioned before, doesn't see you, that ends your game. I've got absolutely nothing against road bikes but just really think it over before you lash out.

If you want a speed fix come down to Thredbo and I'll take you mountain biking.

Nasty wound mate.
But i concur, Accidents will always happen.  I could get T-bonned in a car tomorow and die, so why spend my life worring about it.

I only intend to ride it on weeks ends, for a bit of fun. So i'd think that would cut the risks abit.

Not that i really have much desire to do this, but whats the modding side of things like with bike's?

Adrian, I physicaly cant pedal a pushy these days. My knee is rooted and so is my back, heavy landings have me sidelined for the rest of the day in some serious pain. Thus my quest for a Bike wink.

Re: Road bike's.

ive had my bike and license for about 3 months now, just using it on my days off and weekends for fun, and its awesome!
your best bet for a roadbike forum is www.netrider.com.au
most people there would advise to stay away from hyosungs, theyre cheap korean crap kinda like the daewoo of the bike scene.
decent 250 bikes i had a look at which can be picked up for a reasonable price were:
kawasaki zzr250(i got this one, tends to be a bit fat and slow but can get around corners decently)
kawasaki gpx250(essentially the same as zzr250 but without masses of plastic fairings)
honda vtr250(regarded as one of the best handling learner bikes)
honda cb250(bike you use on pre-learner course, bulletproof bike)
honda cbr250rr(unconfortable riding position if you are larger than a leprechaun)
suzuki across
suzuki bandit 250
then of course you have all the 250 cruiser style bikes which i reckon are a waste. and also you have the trail bikes which you can fit with road tyres if you only do a bit of road riding.

cheers
dave

are you looking to buy new or would you settle for secondhand?

i only got my licence about a year ago....and im still cruising around on my 250
i ended up getting a secondhand one because its your first bike and your bound to drop it or damage it somehow
oh..and ive got a kawasaki zxr250

my 5 cents anyhow

untill it was stolen i was running a NORCO RS downhill with foseF1 wetones USD tripple clamp forks hydrolic disks tripple wall monster rims with single speed front it soon turned into a urban beast with hookworm shoes

michaels2838 your a netrider.......so am i HAHAHAHA talk about a small world.

u know shona (melb) she is the lady that runs the melb part of it. and also does the motomojo rider ware.

Re: Road bike's.

I started with a CR250, god rest its soul.
Then a ZR250 dropped in the wet and lucky no other cars were coming  in the other direction. Then XV750 twin, some old mole changed lanes at the worst moment. I could see she was hopeless and stayed clear of the blindspot, but thought it'd be safer to be infront of her. So just as I try to overtake her and get beside her she merges, no indicator, and nuges me into a lane of slower moving cars. Just stopped millimeters from the back of a falcon station wagon. Last straw.
So potentially close to death on so many occassions.
Fun..........sure, nothing like it, but your body is the thing that hits very solid objects. At least in a car you have something around you.
So I'll admit twice were my doing but the one I'll always remember and fear the most was not my fault.
Hang around a while Pauly, bikes are a bad idea.
I will now await SOO081 accounts of the emergency trauma ward.

I know what your saying Frank. The thing is, I don't intend to ride in Brisbane smile.

Use this for example. This engine I'm putting together. It should be capable of some pretty decent feats. If I got a sudden attack of the stupids, I could easily park it in an immovable object, and it doesn't matter how much car is around me, a solid object at 100kmh+ is going to kill me, or seriously injure me.

thanks for joining them soop

i totaly agree with u mate it is a problem that the thing that gets hurt your fault or not is us but since when did anything worth doing not get u into trouble or scare u or hurt u.....its just something that we all accept as a byproduct of bike riding.

oh n its usally the sunday riders that tend u have the major problems (from my experance that is)
out of 8 of a few friends that started of on bikes im the only one still going all the others screwed up cos the couldnt handle the bike (even 14hp 250) one slid it out through a corner cos he wanted to do a power slide:jester: what a joker hahahahaha twat.

Soop, sorry to hear about the knees and back. I'm certainly hearing you though as years of moto, surfing, snowboarding, and DH have certainly taken their toll on mine and my shoulders as well. I guess that's why I now wrench/instruct with DH as I still get to ride but don't have the pressure to go flat out all the time. Still been known to let the brakes off on the odd occasion. The hills around Ballina would be great on a road bike and it sounds like you are being sensible about it all.

Moto I've been on Specialized for the past 10 years and have a shed full of bikes. Can't bring myself to sell either a bike or a camera. My current DH ride has Boxxer Teams, Shimano XT brakes, Saint cranks, Manitou X4 shock with a Ti spring and a few other trick bits. My favourite is my 04 SX 4X bike that rails corners better than a STI on slicks
