Rev Matching

Just wondering what people think about the effectivness or rev-matching and double clutching. What effect does each have on the trans?

I always double clutch unless my foot is stuck under the pedal or something strange like that happens.
Less wear on the clutch and the syncros.

Honestly I think it does more damage to your car than anything.

You don't really need it on a new car.

Use the clutch twice as much etc.

However some people think they are good/race drivers if they use it :victory:

Just because your pushing the clutch pedal in twice as much doesn't mean that you're using the clutch twice as much wink
If the revs are matched properly when you double clutch the clutch shouldn't really be doing anything at all.

everytime you pull the pressure plate away from the clutch plate and then it re-engage it wear microns of clutch plate material away...just like brake pads. when i had a manual car the only time i change down was to overtake or stop very quickly. other wise i just coasted then went to neutral to stop.
double clutch dont you only change like that in truck

if you know how and can match the r.p.m you should be able to change gears without a clutch

Just making sure you’re aware that even if you can match revs well you should always use the clutch when double clutching in a truck, doing so doubles the life of the transmission as it’s not constantly under the pressure of the engine and load. I got told this by a manufacturer and a professional truck driving instructor.

And as for doing it in cars or other vehicles with synco’s it apparently does more damage to the synco then saving it, not 100% sure how but been told by many mechanics and friends. I rev match on the down change after I’ve put the transmission into gear. I.e. push down the clutch, take gear out of 5th put into 4th gear then rev to the apparent rev it should be doing at that speed then release clutch not sure if this is good or bad but certainly makes it seam like your putting less pressure on the clutch plate to get the engine up to speed

Doing what you described puts less strain on the clutch itself, but will actually wear the "throwout bearing" out faster. As well as this, there are no benefits at all past the clutch, ie there is no benefit for the gearbox in doing this.

As for double clutching wearing the syncros out, not sure but I don't really see how it could unless you were doing a fairly poor job of it...

Re: Rev Matching

double clutching is fairly pointless if not for a reason.

it can extend the life of your clutch plate
it will lessen the life of your clutch assembly and hydraulics
it will lessen the wear on the syncros
it will use more fuel
it will wear out the engine more

so unless the gearbox is a bit dodge or your playing real life Daytona, then its probably serving very little purpose at all.

or your all cool and have a dog engagement gearbox big_smile

I rev match changing down. How badly or quickly does it do damage to the thrust bearing. It's usually only 5-4 4-3 gears. So it's only about 1000rpm difference or a short blip of the throttle.

Double clutching is best left to truckies. Downshift blips are OK.

in reality its barely going to affect the service life of anything but the clutch hydraulics/cable.

but it is handy to know if you ever lose your clutch function. my clutch hose split a month ago and revmatching was critical to driving it round the rest of the day without the clutch. but it still sucked to drive
