Resonator-ectomy

  Top of Page

Has anyone completed a Resonator-ectomy on a 2004 Lib GT.  I have previously done it to a 2001 WRX but didn't really see a great deal of improvement.  Current mods on my GT are a Uni Chip and a 3" CES Exhaust giving me 175 KW atw.

I am interested in putting a VF37 on if I can get one at a reasonable price if anyone is aware of one.

These guys did my engine for me too. This is a long way from home for you mate if your from Agnes Waters.

You should post up your Dyno Graph, great result.
I think there is a vendor on rexnet who may have some VF37's.

Alexxx, I'm pretty sure its a Dyno Dynamics.

Standard boost at this stage.  We haven't played around too much with that as yet as I am 600 K's north of Bris Vegas and I can't just rock up to CnJ every other day if something goes asunder but we probably will if I manage to get onto a VF 37.

I don't know if your a member of the Rexnet forum or not, but you should be able to get some ideas from this thread.

if your going to buy a turbo like that...shouldnt you be getting a front mount? and if you do that mod, then throw in a CAI.

Re: Resonator-ectomy

I certainly don't want to go a front mount as I prefer the vehicle to look as it does.  I think (know) that I am too old to need the visuals of a front mount etc and I also don't want to bastardise the vehicle to fit a front mount either.

I guess I am happy to be guided by the likes of Bill and Kel at CnJ who are playing with our cars all of the time.

From what Kel has told me, the VF37 is a twin scroll, the same as the standard turbo and will bolt straight on with no additional mods apart from re-tuning the Uni Chip.  Sounds good to me.

Have you thought about a stealthy black FMIC if you dont want/need visuals but want more power?

Not really.

Although I haven't seen a GT that has had a front mount fitted, I can only guess that there would be major mods needed to the bumper etc and I don't need that.

At 50 something I am happy to have a standard looking vehicle that will kick arse if it needs to.

Maybe I am just a sneaky old bast**d.

Hey Chappo - in response to your original question, the resonatorectomy is discussed by some members of the Liberty.asn forum here:

Re: Resonator-ectomy

I was bored tonight, so did the resonatorectomy mod.  The intake resonator/silencer is a black bottle that is connected to, and sits directly below the air box.

The sound of air being sucked in is alot louder, and gives the intake a throaty roaring noise when giving it reasonable throttle - especially around 2,500rpm to 4,000rpm .  The BOV is slightly more audible when easing off throttle, but still barely noticeable.  No noticeable performance gain - just abit more noise!

Took about 30mins to do (with my dodgy tools).  When fitting everything back on, I managed to break the clips that hold the intake/snorkel bit in place because I was lazy and forced them in, but they're easily replaced.

I spent an hour yesterday and did the Resonator-ectomy on my GT and I recorded all for prosperity.

Hopefully some may find it useful.

Hi Chappo,

Those instructions are excellent, easy to follow,  a resonatorectomy will be next job on the list for me.

Well done Chappo. Bill and Kell may get a laugh out of that the next time they see your car. Good and cheap solution to plugging that hole.

What differences have you noticed since diong it?

Thanks Chappo.
if you're blocking the hole up (rather than simply removing the resonator), then isn't this effectively the same as having the resonator on?
I simply removed my resonator, and left the hole open (it would be difficult for dirt/water to get up through the splash guard)

The way I look at it is that if you leave the hole open then you will not get the air from the Intake Chute forcing through the filter but moreso slipping out through the hole and into the inner guard. But, I am certainly not an engineer.

I will let the gurus comment on my theory.

Re: Resonator-ectomy

My resonatorectomy was a little more violent than simply taking it out, tho prolly illegal, IMO it sounds like a turbo winding up, when accelerating, or sorta like a wee little jet taking off.

were the resonator used to be

illegal bit i think

i've posted this ellswere on the forum, but i think its relevent here as well. ^_^

The interesting thing is that there is nothing visible to see unless you remove the Intake Chute and airbox.

I must say that I have not noticed a great deal of difference.  I cannot really hear any increase in induction noise as I have the full system fitted and I am more tuned to listening to that.  It may be purely co-incidental but the hesitation / missing in low gears that appeared after the chip was installed, and apparently it is a common problem with GT's and XT's does not seem as apparent.  Time will tell.

Does the unichip have a module to deal with the Fly-by-Wire throttle?

The reason I ask is because I thought that was the reason for the hesitation you sometimes get. My XT suffers from the same problem and I often wondered if it was doing what you've done with the chip.

Re: Resonator-ectomy

I am not sure about the Uni-chip having a module for the fly by wire throttle but the issue only became evident with my car after the chip was fitted.  Apparently there are many other people having similar issues and I am not sure if they all have a chip or not.

If anyone has found a way to overcome the problem I would love to know about it.  It is not major issue, just a pain in the ar#@ when it happens and it generally happens at the bottom of my street which is a sharp left-hander that then goes up-hill in a hurry.

Do you find it happens whilst taking off or driving normally then applying throttle for a moderate amount of acceleration?

My XT suffers only under that sort of load. Under full hard acceleration no probs.

I just figured if we both had the same problem it's weird that the Unichip didn't sort it.

Just the same as yours.

No worries on the strip or normal driving.  It reminds me of the old "kangaroo-ing" from days gone by when you go around a corner or up a hill in too high a gear.  It is almost like it momentarily starves for fuel.
