Rear bumper respray?

  Top of Page

Hey all,

This is an awesome forum here, have been reading for a while, but not yet posted, I am hoping to get some advice on a repair needed for my rear bumper....

I was stupid (and tired) late one night earlier this week and reversed my silver gen 3 RX into a cement beam sad, so I want to get it fixed and I have been to a few places and have basically come back with two options:

1. Repair and respray
2. New (reconditioned) bumper and spray

The scratch/bump on the bumper bar is minor and you can barely notice the dent at all (not sure if there is any damage behind the bumper, I wouldn't think there is), so I think the main issue is the stressed/flaked/scratched paint.

The thing I'm not sure about is if a respray is any good? One panel beater said that you can't properly strip back the plastic bumper and so if you tried a respray then the paint job would be no good and would just flake off down the track. Does anyone know if that’s the case?

I don't mind paying the extra $200 for the new bumper option if the repair/respray is no good, but I don't want to fork out the extra $$ if it’s not needed.

Thanks in advance!

+1, my rear bumper has mad bumper aids and needs a respray (or to be replaced with an RX kit)

I have had both a front and rear bumper respray done by the Touch-Up Guys - Paintless Dent Removal or whatever they are in your area and never had the paint flake off down the track, well not after 3 yrs anyway.

I've had both my old 01 RX Liberty and my current 03 Forester done and I'm happy with their work and will definitely use them again if and when needed.

My Liberty had the front bumper repainted before I bought it. Paint is chipping off it. I got the rear bumper repainted, and asked for a touch up on the front. His comment was the front hadn't been properly prepared, and would keep chipping. Moral - choose a trustworthy painter!

Prep as stated is the key. Use a quality repairer.

If its only a slight dent, it can be heated and and popped out easily and the paint is an easy fix either patch repair and blend or total bumper respray.

Ive had both done and never a drama.

I get a bumper resprayed inc any minor repairs for $200 cash if i remove and take the bumper too them.

Most places should be similar if you do the same and pay cash.
