Police cars

  Top of Page

Hi guys, I'm just wondering regarding the police cars, all of their car's engine are sound different when accelerating (pedal to the metal), eventhough it is the same car from the outside to other V6's or V8's cars. If I'm not wrong, I read an article regarding police cars that their suspension were being upgrade to a performance suspension or something like that. How bout the engine? Do they change the headers or put a supercharger or something? Cheers.

Suspension upgrade and chipped over here in WA.

Mate services them.

Apparently demons cars are more highly modded.

Let's give 'em a canary!

yeah they generally have a police pack on the commodores.. used to be called BT1 pack not sure what it is now.. they get FE2 suspension and a different chip.. I know the VR's were MAFless tuned too cos we have a few ex chasers that are VR's come through dads shop and they were all missing the MAF sensor

By the sounds of it, they've been modding their cars for a while, i've a mate who has a Vt (97) commodore which is ex cop and has suspension upgrade and is tuned to something but has the chip removed, rides like a dream compared to the standard models of the same year.

They've been modding them since they've been driving cars mate.

Remember the VLturbo police car newspaper ads?

Ex - Pursuit cars are sought after over here. By true bogans anyway.

VL BT1 Interceptor is the name of EX-Cop cars... and the bad side is, they used the same suspension from the VL-VT... Known as "FE2"

Sold the Subaru, replaced it with a Honda.. but all I know is Subaru's! (and Holden V8's of course):secret:

Thanks for the info befour & XX. Seems they were really behind the times. Maybe the stronger Ford presence in the police fleet will yield better performing cars?

Re: Police cars

most highway patrols are V8 commo's, reason being that suspension is easier and cheaper to modify on the Holdens, and believe it or not, its the officers themselves that prefer the commo?

I work across the road to one of sydney super-stations, and the boys in blue love talking about their cars, and so do I.

they tweak up the ECU, the Gearbox gets a tweak for quicker shifting, all done through holden themselves for the police fleet.

all diffs on V8's are LSD regardless.. the good old Borg warner 8 3/4 inch with 3yikes:8 gears in them..

the V6's all have the same diff but not LSD and 3:4:5 gears,

Do none of the components get removed before sale?

Does it feel good to have a thread stay on topic for more than three posts?

Re: Police cars

I know in NSW Police cars do NOT have anything done to them, apart from bigger alternator, and bigger battery. Some HWY cars have a little done, but very minor stuff if anything.

DO NOT buy a police car. As stated in the past never advertise your car as an ex cop car etc. I don't care if you say it is a D's car on this or that, they ALL get flogged senseless and abused the hell out of.

I mean we have to sometimes get new rotors and pads after 5000k, doing 2000km in a week.

I can garuantee that they DID.. they may not now but they definatly did as we had to service some at my dads shop that had the BT1 package, we get full specs on the car when servicing them from the fleet company that owns them (NSW Police dont own the police cars a fleet company does)
As for the flogging of them this is most certainly true LOL I know of one car we serviced which was a Turbo Deisel Nissan Patrol that nearly died within the first 3000Km of driving because it was flogged soo hard, it did last out its time in service but was more gutless to drive then anything I know of. I get the privilage of driving these cars after a service from time to time to deliver them. The servicing schedules are very strict and the fleet company alocates a certain amount of money for the service, if you go over that bad luck you dont get paid any more, you arnt allowed to even drop the oil without authorisation from the fleet company either. If some form of repair work needs to be carried out such as leaking seals or replacement part you have to again contact the company and give them a quote and full details of what you are doing how and why then they will again tell you how much they will pay.

Re: Police cars

My old man used to own  an Ex-police VS v6.

It was auto, but the shifts were very quick, and sharp.
It had and LSD, and the FE2 suspension.
It could actually beat a V8 VS, stock v Police pack.

Was quiet a good car, my only dislike was the horrible amount of road noise there was in the cabin, and the seats suck. Other than that all was good.

EDIT:

Was a Victorian car....

Yea my brother had0 a VS S years ago, was fairly quick for what it was. Compared directly to another of the same model which a family friend owned, which wasn't an ex cop car.

Apparently different ecu or something along those lines, I know my mate if he hooked it and planted it, it wouldn't start spinning.

No idea if they still do things to em, but I'd believe SkoobyGT

Watch any emergency vehicle responding to an urgent matter and you will not buy one.

I remember hearing a radio call during a chase in Concord (Sydney) once......"We're ah....back on the road now...."

Off road in Concord. Now there's a challenge

Pfft, you run the same risk buying any car, especially a turbo car. At least you are guarenteed a properly maintained, and professionally repaired vehicle.

I agree he is in the know for his state, having three officers in my family, and knowing a mechanic that services the police cars here in Fremantle, WA, I am also 'in the know'.
