Personal Import

  Top of Page

Hello

I'm after some info from someone that has brought a personal import into australia from preferably NZ but another county is ok.

I'm looking into this at the moment and want to know more info.

If anyone could help that'd be great.

I think thats how Kosti found his wife? HAHAH!!

I know that it is quite a fair bit of effort bringing over a car from asia / states or europe, from NZ it shouldnt be so bad, as the EPA restrictions are very similar to ours or if not the same,

I had a close mate ship over a GTR from Japan, the problem he had was getting it engineered to Aus standards, which included de-tuning the car and removing quite a fair bit of mods that it had, our sound and exhaust levels are very stringent compared to other countries,

Import tax is a pain too as its a fair bit, and then again you have to trust the companies shipping it over not to put it in a container where it could get damaged.

Thanks..

That's the kinda info i'm chasing from someone that has got one from NZ.

Costs Involved?

Mods Needed to bring it to our standards?

Any hassles with NZ or AUS authorities?

Recommended Companys?

I've got a family member living there atm, she will be moving home in 12months to live back here. Thought i should take advantage of it while i can.

For a personal import you need to have owned the car in that country of origin for at least 12 months!

As stated, you will need to prove ownership within the country for a 12 month period before bringing it back to Australia.. eg. the family member you've got living in NZ would need to be the registered owner for a 12 month period before getting it back here..

As far as standards and what not.. from what I've heard, NZ standards are modelled closely on ADR's therefore most of their vehicles are compliant, or easy to get compliance for import into Australia..

As mentioned, yeh you'll need to pay import duties and all the rest..

If you're serious about importing.. You might want to have a chat with 'legacy rsk' when he return from his holidays, as he brought his car in from Japan, so I'm sure he's got a lot more knowledge on the whole process than most of us!!..

Hope that helps! smile

(Oh.. and they only allow you to Import Subaru's from NZ, so if you're thinking of getting any other cars... you cant wink )

I'd try to find a personal import for sale here in Australia first.

Saves lots of headaches and money in the long run!
