Past MY06 Lib STi owner thinking of buying a MY07 STi, advice needed!

  Top of Page

Hi Guys,

Its been a while since l participated on this forum, looks like it remains an active and friendly forum smile

l was an early adopter back in early 2006 buying a new Liberty tb STi when they were first released. There we many things l liked about the car but ultimately we fell out of love after a year and l sold her off. l didn't like the weak brakes, and the engine lacked a bit of poke, was laggy down low and had an insipid engine note. l could have done some mods but chose to get out while the resale was still strong.

Its now time for a second car mainly for me but also occasional family dutys. Three appeal, an Evo IX, M3 or an MY07 Lib Sti. The later STi really is the car the first should have been, Brembo's, Sunroof, Xenons, 6spd etc. l am yet to drive one and was hoping to get owners opinions on how different it is to the MY06 version. Is the engine torquier with a nicer note? Is the handling improved at all, l remember it being ok but tended to push a bit through corners? l was also curious about the gearbox, is this an STi item or is it just the shifter?

l would consider some light mods, ECUtek & exhaust mainly, any owners done these mods and what do you think of the improved grunt and driveability?

Finally, how much and where can l source one of those neat looking JDM grilles, they certainly finish off the car?

Sorry for all the questions :stop:

Cheers all,
mondie

Hey Mondie, I have the '07 built MY08 GT-B (Wagon) Non Sti.
I recently fitted a custom made 3" Stainless exhaust (Buttler Built Products) Norm Buttler hand makes all his own mufflers and the work is superb. I had the ECU-Tec Tune at Maximum Motorsport here in Perth. It now has more than adequate performance and a really nice, unique note. 2.5 GT's have a traditional single scroll turbo, unlike your previous 2.0 twin scroll that would have sounded like a Fiat with a hole in the muffler. Mine sounds like a WRX at low R/min and cruise speed but in S# mode at full throttle it sounds European, like a 6 cylinder Beemer. It must be the twin mufflers I suspect. It's gone from 142 KW to 159 KW at the wheels. And from 282 NM to 349NM. It also livened up the dead E-Throttle. I thoroughly recomend it. S&J in Adelaide do it too. It won't alter tune/economy in I mode either.
The 6 speed is the way all turbo Subaru should be made in the first place, 5 speeds suck. The Auto sucks too in my opinion.
I have Brembo's and rims to go on shortly so I'll end up close to STi spec eventually.
The 6 speed fitted to the MY07+ GT, GT spec B and the "Tuned By" are all the same as each other, as strong as a WRX STi box but have slightly longer ratios. Mine has a lanky shifter, I suspect the Tuned model has a shorter throw.

Hi Dtrally,

Your comment above has confirmed what l hoped for, now l am even more keen on the MY07. That horrible thin engine note from the MY06 still haunts me, l think it was one of the dislikes with the car that started to make me go off it. Good to know the Gearbox is STi equivalent in quality too.

The car l will be looking at probably tomorrow has already been fitted with a full 3" system and Ecutek4 tune so it should sound the part and go pretty well too. Will report back after l have given it the once over

Cheers,
Mondie

Nice one :Derisive:l must admit the Evo 9 has its nose in front, looking at the Liberty STi this morning so after that it will be decision time. l lay in bed at night wondering if l want full on go kart handling in the Evo, or something thats not quite as full on but has a little luxury too. Having owned an Lib STi in the past, full on is tempting me!

come on Mondie, go with the Liberty TB STI. I got 154 kw and 355 Nm on just the flash tune alone and sounds great now. New dump and larger i/c will net even more improvement on dyno numbers as well. Evo interior is poverty spec imo but it all depends on how much time you expect to spend at the track vs daily driving I guess.

Very true, the Evo interior is the only thing l am still undecided on. The STi Lin l drove this morning was great 190awkw and nice handling too. They have made a lot of worthwhile improvements since the MY06 model.

l live in the Adelaide Hills so its perfect driving country, that's why the Evo is so damn tempting. l will be taking the Evo for a run this afternoon, having never driven one l will ultimately let the driving experience decide which to go for

Cheers,

yeap fair call Mondie, front and rear sway bar mod will vastly improve the handling on the Liberty TB STI as well plus a bit of neg camber alignment.

Hi mate,

Whats involved in these mods, it already has a front & rear sway bars factory l think ? Plus factory strut brace. Keen to know what can be done with next to no mods (and cost smile)

Cheers,

factory sways on even the TB STI are very small and light weight. I chose whiteline front and rear sways and the cost was under $500 installed. This is the first handling mod that should be done for the Gen IV Libs in my opinion. Reduces the body roll considerably.

After having a "short"  short shifter in my foz , the 08 STi Lib shifter feels like a normal height and throw to me .... would hate to see the giraffe in the GT !
