thats bullshit.. you can still drive cars that have been engineered if your on ur p's still.. look at all the mini truckers out there that are on there p's with bag kits.. they hav to get em engineered and if they do they're all sweet.. and no u shouldnt need to get the exhaust engineered.. just dont make it to loud so they cant defect u for it..

Vehicle and passenger conditions for P1 and P2 licence holders
Prohibited vehicles
#Eight or more cylinders (except diesel).
#A turbocharged engine (except diesel).
#A supercharged engine (except diesel).
#Engine performance modifications that require an engineers' certificate.
#Certain high performance six cylinder engine vehicles or other vehicles as described in the publication Novice Drivers - High Performance Vehicle Restrictions.

it does say engine modifications so im not sure if engineered suspension mods are included???

im not 100% on the legalities but im pretty sure you dont need an engineers cert for headers or a catback...as long as it isnt rediculously loud and you drive sensibly you shouldn't attract any police attention.
cheers

The RTA says that minor (owner certified) modifications do not need an engineering certificate. In regards to suspension the RTA calls the following a minor mod
"Fitting of handling enhancing suspension components such as roll stabiliser bars and up-rated shock absorbers"

As for exhaust systems,

If modifications affect compliance with any emission or noise related ADRs then it must be engineered. Most work on the exhaust system will have drastic changes on the emissions coming from your car. As for the noise ADR which from memory is something like 86dB now, you should be okay providing you are not looking at a loud system.

Chances are if you aren't being an idiot you wont have your car checked over but in the event that you do and it is deemed that the mods are not 'minor' there are obviously consequences. If they decide to get the EPA to check over your car you will be up for massive fines and if they wanted to be arses about it they can actually send you to jail for a few years. I have no idea how often this happens but just thought you might like to be aware.

With all the P Platers here I'm actually considering building up a 2.5 N/A engine just to see what can be gotten out of it while it still 'looking' fairly stock. There is a fair bit you can do to liven up the 2.5 that won't break a P platers meager budget. Leave it with me and I'll see what I end up with.
