Oxygen sensor, thown so much money at it.

  Top of Page

It all started when my Check Engine light came on for the first time....I didnt have the money to get it looked at so I saved up and took my 98 RX to the local Subaru dealer and got them to check the codes. They found that the oxygen sensor was bad and wanted $600 dollars for a genuine one.

I went and got a 2nd hand one from the wreckers and got it installed by Subaru. 10 kms down the road, same problem. They said that O2 sensor is bad too "Get another one" they said.

So after saving more money I ordered one from Supercheap Auto and got it installed by the local auto electrician they told me to get the fault codes cleared from Subaru. But I didnt have the $50 required so I cleard the codes myself using this tutorial http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/How-to-read-a … 002365952.

I was cheering until the light came back on after driving for a while, the codes still reads O2 sensor.

So. What could be the problem you guys? Ive only owned this car for about 4 months and have had so mnay problems with it. I just really want to get it back to normal. Could something be fouling the o2 sensors repeatedly? I just got all oil leaks fixed.

Could that tutorial not of cleard the codes properly even though I got the 4 long flashes at the end? Could it be wiring somewhere?

the idea after you have reset your ecu, check to see if there are any fault codes. if there are you havent done it properly...

same thing happend to me got a new o2 sensor got it put in cleared the codes then the check engine light  came back on again ... check the codes 02 sensor again im beginning to think i got a dodgy 02 sensor , its confusing because with the new sensor in the car is running better ... who know cant count how many time iv reset the ecu ... disconected the battery over night it cleared the codes .. check engine light came back on again cleared the codes by conecting the black and green plugs under the dash drive ror 10 kmh etc check engine light flashed constant node codes showing up ...  so when i get a chance im going to just get another 02 sensor and try again ...  the one i got was the bosch after market one ...

Im thinking bad earth also. Did I read somewhere about a earth fault at the back of one of the heads? It might pay to check the O2 sensor voltage at the ECU. Hot engine of course.
Maybe a workshop with a scan tool can give you the voltages and graph the O2 operation.

if your in sydney, i'll scan it for free and let you know whats going on with the car via the scan tool...

In my experience, while trying to exhaust all the mods possible on NA 3.0RB H6 before biturbocharing it, the Oxygen sensor has been hpothesised as the reason as to why the check engine light kept coming on. We changed the spark plug to hotter ones that seemed to help for about 6 months then it started agin. I found that just resetting the ECU did the trick everytime. I wouldn;t waste anymore money on the oxygen sensor and look at the sparkies and the wiring. Thats what I think I could be wrong.
Good luck.

Liberty GT '04 wagon.
I've had a CC flashing and engine light on for a while and no change in performance.  I decided to get it checked after ran battery flat charging my mobile for 10 minutes. The battery needed to be changed then, guess what,  o2 failure.  I bought an after market o2 sensor from hiflo.com.au. $60.  Mechanic replaced and tested it fixed fault. Unhappily after short time driving CC and Engine LIght came on but ECU would not hold the fault.  I then drove 200 km with car working perfectly. CC on all the way.  Wow success I thought.  Sadly as I left the freeway, returned to driving in traffic, it  FAILED!! I doubt it's the sensor as each time the ignition is off it the light doesn't come on???

in my experience any silicone based sealants like gasket sealer etc which are used on the intake (common) or exhaust side (not too common) can affect the o2 sensor readings

Ok I got new aftermarket one and got it wired up. I took it back to Subaru when the CEL came back on and he goes "This ones fucked too, get another one". He showed me the scan tool and the signal from the O2 Sensor was barley registering.

He assured me that the O2 sensor is the problem and it is sheer luck that the replacement 2nd hand genuine one was stuffed aswell as the universal aftermarket one. I dont believe him. Any suggestions?

Fairly sure a poor earth will trick the ECU into thinking the O2 sensor is faulty. I would be looking down this path given it showed a "weak" signal. Did the tech take a reading directly from the sensors wires using an oscilloscope?
Hope this helps.

same thing happend with mine when i got it scanned showed no readings ... mines finally working now touch wood i was told it may take a while for the ecu to recognize the new sensor with numerous ecu resets, and weeks later finally i left the battery disconnected over night and half a day reconnected it let the car warm up and then drove!!! check engine light hasn't come on for 5 days now ,so hopefully its all sorted .. car seems to drive better now .. only thing is iv been letting it warm up b4 driving when i drive it on a cold engine before it had warmed up it can splutter sometimes ...

How many wires come out of the O2 sensor? What colors are they?

I had this problem recently as well. But I think mine is dodgey because it's a sensor of an old rusted G1 pipe.
AutoXcess stole my original one when they were working on my car. I got given most of the original piping but no o2 sensor...

there is 2 white and one black i think the 2 white ones are the heater wires?

i know on the after market 02 sensor the black wire is in the wrong hole in the plug ..

Yes the white wires would be for the heater and the black is the signal. As there are only three wires there is no earth wire (only 4 wire heated or 2 wire no heater have an earth).
If the sensor is working you should have the same voltage at the sensor and at pin #26 of the ECU (2nd row 4th from left?? ref to workshop manual to check). You will need to test the sensor with the engine fully warm and running about 2000rpm. The voltage produced should fluctuate between about 0.2 and 0.8 volts faster than once per second (0.2v is the lean end). To test the voltage you will need a digital voltmeter or a oscilloscope.
A crook O2 sensor will produce practically no voltage and a old (lazy) sensor will fluctuate at greater than once per second with a narrower voltage band.
The heating elements are powered from the main relay, the same one that powers the injectors.
Having rambled on a bit, the first thing I would check would be all the connectors and maybe clean them with some contact cleaner.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

PS If the black wire is in the wrong hole, how does the signal get to the ECU?

Ok guys I am still having this problem and Im bloody sick of it.

Heres the things I have tried:

Taken it to 2 auto electricians, both dont want a bar of it

Taken it to subaru, they wanna replace the oxygen sensor for like $400

Replaced O2 sensor twice by pros and once byself

Cleared computer

Left unplugged from battery for ages

Used a bottle of injector cleaner.

Only thing left to do is replace the spark plugs which im picking up tommorow from supercheap. Also how much are spark leads and how often to they need to be replaced?

Im gonna give her a service tommorow but im a bit of a noob.

Heres what ill be doing :

New air filter

New Oil fiter, fresh oil

Spark plugs

Check all fluids.

Check brakes

Is there anything more I should do?
