OBD2 scanner for 99' B4

  Top of Page

Hi Guys!

I'm new to the forum. I was wondering if anyone can recommend an affordable OBD2 scanner that can read error codes for the B4. I have the one with automatic gearbox. Cheers!

Is that your legacy? Looks sweet! Not sure about finding an OBD2 scanner though? Does the place you service your car have one?

Hello mate!

Yes thats my legacy. Just got it 2 months ago as a Japanese import which was converted to left hand drive. I don't know if the dealership here would want to mess with it thats why I was thinking of getting my own scanner. It usually has its check engine light on when I go past 120-160kph but goes out if I restart the engine. Its got Tein coilovers when I bought it and handles well. I just replaced the front rotors, suspension bushes, ball joints and timing belt just to make sure. Where abouts are you in OZ BigWillie? Cheers!

Not sure about affordable, but I believe Tractrix cables are quite good: http://www.tactrix.com/

LHD conversion? That sounds like a lot of work and potentially could be responsible for the error codes. What country are you from?

Im in region NSW mate, and also have a Legacy!

I might be wrong but can you pull the codes manually? Isnt there a way to count the flashes or something? You can also try the nz forums, lots more Legacys on there. clubsub.org.nz

Hey mate! About the only tool that will reliably connect to the early model subarus is tatrix. Even then, earlier than 2004 is getting to be touch and go, although with the B4 you shouldn't have too many dramas. I've tried several cheap methods and ended up biting the bullet and getting the tatrix. All the cheap ones have read later model cars, but not my 02 B4. I imagine you'll have this same problem. Get the tatrix and be done with it dude.
Best of luck! Welcome to the forum also!

Cheers,
Ben

Edit - That ECUdatascan looks pretty sweet aek! Only problem is the price tag, although there is a lot of gear stashed inside the unit by the looks.

Can't you connect the diagnostic cables together like on the Gen 2 (BG5)? There should be two green and two black cables that plug in together (above the pedals, you'll need to remove the plastic cover to get to them) switch on the ignition but don't start the car - the engine light will flash to display any stored codes. The long flash = 10 and the short flash = 1 so 2 x long flash and 3 x short flash = code 23 for example.

Although yours has been converted to LHD so I guess the wires might be hard to find if they didn't move them over...
