NOOBS newies newbies or any other name for a new poster

  Top of Page

Guys,

Clean up time is about to happen. A new wave a mods and a new wave of enforcement is coming.

We were all a new members at some stage. It isnt a bad thing they all arent idiots spastics or the likes. Give them a little time and be helpful WE ALL CANT BE HEROS FROM DAY ONE LIKE SOME.

The top poster and one of the great guys from the forester site just makes a post with links to the answers to their questions and recommends they read them and if then they still dont understand make a post about it.  Now  i would get more enjoyment  knowing that if i new the info and helped somoene out rather than just bash them over the head with my 10" wang.

So lets open this up for some discussion. Keep it nice and keep it respectful and clean

I totally back this up,

lately there has been too much Noob bashing, even from other Noobs!!

I remember being a noob on here, and I didnt cop this garbage, 3500 posts later im still here!

have a look at some of the noobs that got flamed, where are they now?? trolling the site without logging on and not contributing.

all of you pretty much agreed with my comments about this place being more of a community than a forum, rememeber?

I feel sorry for these newbs that sign up and cop it..

Im all for flaming Kosti, there is no issue here:angel:

Re: NOOBS newies newbies or any other name for a new poster

Yeah completely agree. I havent been here very long and when I first joined I asked my fair share of stupid questions, and others were good and told me to use the search function or just gave me the answer.

I think it also depends on what the newies are looking for on the site. They maybe looking for nothing but anyway, whether it be DIY's, specific questions about issues they are having with their car or wanting to learn more.

If someone is going to sign up and rip into everyone then others should be allowed to defend themselves or show the newbie what it feels like to be ripped into.

Anyway theres my 2cents...

If it makes sense.

I'm not really sure what we're discussing here but if I'm on the right track...

It'd be great if people would stop telling EVERYONE to just search for their questions. Have any of you stopped to consider the fact that in 6 months time, doing a search for "exhaust" will return 100 pages of people saying "Search"? And on top of that, not everyone is great at searching. Sometimes people just don't know the right words to use...
A better way to combat this would be if the mods would make useful posts sticky every now and then too...

Yup something like that

for example if anyone would like to start it say suspension topic

create a thread with links to all the useful DIY's or posts regarding suspension mods a list of what fits and all the other useful information

so if you guys want to start them off and i can sticky them

i think when someone posts an introduction thread keep it to that, if any technical questions are asked just direct them to the forum, otherwise the thread just gets dragged on.

All questions that have been covered should be deleted after X amount of days. Ok some people pose questions in their intros which is fair enough because everyone has to start somewhere. Usually those who receive help are genuine with their approach rather than starting off on the wrong foot and carry on like a tool. The New Post page should have a big message telling people to search before they create a new thread. Some hints on how to narrow down the search would help.

I think some of the newer MOD's should start collecting the useful info and start a sticky and then refer noobs and similar questions to these sticky threads

Ill add my bit.

As a tradesmen i try to help people here as much as i can with there electrical and mechanical questions that they may have....but the same questions get asked all the time for EXAMPLE how do i put a bonnet scoupe on my Gen III and will it go faster....i mean seriously you can only answer it so many times or ever read it just the same.....

but i do say we should have a page when you join like frequent asked questions and have a knowlagable mod gather unsful info that answers silly questions like that...so that the new people do clogue up the forum with new thread which we have covered before.....

hope that makes sense and has som input...well that just my thought....

Hi Guys,
Firstly I'd like to apologise for my recent bout of n00b bashing, I just got really sick of NA noobs asking how to get more power out of their setup, it won't happen again.

I agree with what Subaru Junkie stated, in that we need a few stickies in relevant tech sections that cover a basic area.  I tried to suggest this a while ago, but it fell on deaf ears.

That's why I wrote an article entitled "TT path to performance" that I'd like to see stickied:
http://www.ozliberty.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7713
Fair enough, I haven't tested it personally, but most of the senior modders have taken a similar path and it's been modified from a thread by MarkMcRS on RSLC that I found really helpful, that would solve a few, "how do I get power out of my TT setup?" questions.

I had a "suspension Path to Performance article written" but have not yet posted it up, as I'm trying to insert a H-brace section and discover why people think ALKs aren't good (although recommended by whiteline).

I'd like to see a general Tech section as well, as there are a lot of questions that aren't specific to generations, and don't fit in the other sections either.  I'd look as abolishing the Driveline section as well, as no-one seems to read it.

Cheers
Darryl

People you all seem to be suggesting similar things, being stickied threads with links to other useful threads.
Instead of demanding someone else do it, start putting one together yourself! Hopefully some other people will contribute, and before long we'll have a few threads filled with useful links that should answer everyone's questions.

Inserting links in to posts isn't restricted to mods folks wink

Cheers mate thats what i was about to say. I dont have the Lib expertise but i am here to help with the day to day running of the forum .. new mods spam ect ect ...

If you guys are willing to put your hands up for a section i am pretty sure i can designate "powers" to that section only so you can mod sticky and edit posts.

Its your forum and it would be great to see you all contribute to the running of it and i think with a few helping out making the DIY AND FYI threads we can clean it up.

Cheers Nath

It will end up all Cheifs and no indians at that rate.

I understand where your all comming from in regards to n00b bashing.
But seriously, there a some stupid-ass questions asked.

Making stickies wont really help the main issue either, because those getting flamed didnt search in the first place, had they, they wouldnt be asking the moronic question!.

Also, spoon feeding these people,  only make's them do it again and again.
Maybe an initial flamming will be crow bar to flip there rock so to speak, make them think "Sh!t, i dont want to get that again.", then perhaps they'll make sure to do some research before posting.
Yes you'll loose some members this way, but hell, do we really need the kind of people that cant wipe there own arse without being told how to?
What can these people bring to the forum, more useless dribble?

If people learned somthing by being spoon fed answers, you wouldnt need to go to University to become a teacher, someone would hand a room full of 30 people a text book and you would have instant geniuses.

If someone really wants to be apart of this mob, they'd put the effort in to make themselve's usefull. As can be seen with a recent new member, Nuko26(?) i believe.  A young fella, seems to have alot of brains and knows how to research! (Shock fuggin horror.)

Stuff your stickies. I hate them with a passion.

I have a better idea.

Why not have a wiki article section, that's still attached to the forums (and hosted by the same servers) where we can compile our own "subaru encyclopedia"? (Much like wikipedia works...based on user's own contributions) Then, we can add the search component to that, or you can actually browse it as a proper reference article, with a menu, and links to all the information you want.

I've seen this being done on another forum, and it worked brilliantly.

There, we can compile our DIY's, FAQ's, edit them where required, and then, we can have everything we need in the one place as a reference point. Slowly, it'll build up to a fantastic technical reference point, to which then, when n00bs sign on, they're made to read the wiki first to answer their questions. Only then if they have questions about the wiki articles, we can answer them without the whole repetitiveness and ad nauseum associated with catering to n00bs with their questions.

Stickies will become unorganised too soon, and you'll find you'll have more stickies than anything.

Leave the forums for disucssion of topics, and have dedicated Topic leaders who would be responsible for the compilation of all agreed upon information.

While thats a great idea, i still believe its flawed in one aspect.

Getting the Stupid ones too read it.  How do you force them, make it so they cant view the forums without looking at the wiki?
They'll just skip it.
Another problem is gathering actuall fact, and not page's and page's of hearsay. That and keeping it up to date, Mods have enough trouble killing spam bots as it is.

All in all a good idea, and a step in the right direction.

Incorrect on many issues.  Stickys are a great idea not just for new members but regulars aswell. If someone wants to put their hand up and help out more power to them atleast they are showing an interest.

Also what gives you the right and who made you god  to attack and yes its an attack a new person.  Lets say a new memeber signs up ... doesnt have a mechanical bone or thought in his head asks a question and as ususal you flame away look at me i am king sh*t i am a forum god .... ok so he walks you say we dont need him here but what IF ( yes it an if but we will never know now ) he maybe is an electronics guru for example with a massive amount of knowledge and just says fark it they are a bunch of tossers. Plus it cant be anymore useless dribble than a lot of stuff is here can it :crazy:

Re: NOOBS newies newbies or any other name for a new poster

As for the n00b topic:

I'm afraid I share a little of everyone's sentiments. As frustrating as it is having shy little keyboard warriors asking how to put on a pod, when they've never taken a screwdriver to hand (except in woodwork class at school) does frustrate the living (and some dead) snot out of me. Here we are, a bunch of Subaru enthusiasts who are limited to putting on pod filters and exhausts.

Sick bro.

For a n00b to successfully integrate into the Ozliberty community, I believe they should be pro-active about the whole thing.

Perfect example is Subarujunkie (Jovan).

Comes along, new to forums, and acts a little toolish.
Sure, we all had a bit of a go at him on the forums at first (who can remember his uber-sized signatures??!.)
Instead of having a mad whinge and sook, he decides to get into shape, and participate in tech and banter.
He rocks up  to meets, and has integrated very well into the social aspect of things.

Happy n00b graduate!

What I can't stand are those shy keyboard warrior types. Ones that can talk the talk, but never walk the walk. The serial poster who asks the repetitive questions that only frustrate people. It gets to the point where I myself refrain on clicking on new topic threads, and only reading ones from certain people. Sure its not conductive to the forum, but I can't bear to read another repeated question.

I think that n00bs do have to prove themselves as not being foolish, baiting people, and posting worthless stuff.

Oh. And Grammar too. I freaking can't stand SMS/lazy speak. Please police this. I can understand people who use English as a second language (I do so myself), but please, make the effort!!
