noise when idling, dissapears when push clutch in

  Top of Page

I have just purchased a 1995 liberty, clean as, although when it sits idling there is a noise (gearbox) but disappears when i push in the clutch, the gearbox is also quite noisy.
I am sure someone can tell me what it is

Thanks

A throw out bearing is part of the clutch, not the tranny. You would be better to wait until you have to change the clutch and kill two birds with the one stone.

Apparently the clutch is new!!! I dont see why the throw out bearing would not have been changed at the same time

It sounds like noise in the gearbox itself. When you are idling in neutral most of the gears and shafts in the gearbox are turning. When you put your foot on the clutch the gearbox is disconnected from the engine so it stops turning. If the noise isn't really bad just put up with it for a while. If it's really loud then do something about it.

Sometimes when people replace the clutch they make the stupid mistake of re-using an old throw-out bearing, so even on a brand new clutch you might get throw-out bearing noise. Ordinarily the throw-out bearing would make more noise when you push the clutch in though, not less...
