NHRA Drag Racer Scott Kallita - Fatal Crash

  Top of Page

Hi,

Just so sad. For anyone that has even a remote interest in drag racing, the Kalitta name will be a familiar one.

RIP.

Video Here.

Cheers,
Nik

Shame about this event however there are some positives from this tradgedy.

He died doing what he loved to do which means a lot to some people like myself. If I had to choose when my time was up, I'd have to choose something like this.

Also, he wouldn't of felt a thing due to the speed and sudden impact of the accident.

This happened in a controlled environment. Drag racing is a dangerous sport, but that goes along with everything else in todays world. If it was on the street, who knows whatelse might have happened. I realise its a purpose built car for the track but still, its more so the principal.

My thoughts go to his family and friends.

Yep, if you're going to go you may as well go doing something you love...

Let's hope that more positives can come out of Scott's death - perhaps a revision of the emergency areas at all the major tracks and a defined standard of design and construction.

Tragically it appears that both parachutes were torched by the fire. Fires like that are usually survivable in drag racing otherwise. I hope as a result they do some research into better parachute materials or longer, flame resistant cables perhaps?
Energy absorbing barriers, catch fences, sand traps etc. It appears that there is a fairly substantial barrier at the end of that track.
Sadly it's usually only after something like this that safety upgrades are looked at.

As a result of Scott Kalitta's crash, the NHRA have announced a temporary reduction in the length of the racing surface from 1320 feet to 1000 feet for Top Fuel and Nitro Funny Car, effective immediately: story here.

I can understand why they have taken this step, however, personally I wouldn't like to see full length (1320) tracks lost forever - Nitro drag racing has always been over a quarter of a mile.

No announcement as yet from ANDRA with regards to Australian events and venues.

The NHRA has said that it is temporary while ways of improving track and driver safety are investigated, but as this is the cheapest way of increasing the stopping distance available, I have a feeling that this may become permanent.

On Funny cars, brakes on all 4 wheels is already mandatory. However, while front brakes are better than nothing, the tyres are relatively small in width to be able to provide massive stopping power.

Also - having worked as a track official in the braking area of a dragstrip before - the big problem I see with braking and drag cars such as funny cars, is a combination of a short wheelbase, no suspension and large 'slicks' on the rear. When the brakes are applied they have a tendency to cause the car to bounce on the rear tyres, and when they are up in the air they aren't doing much to stop the car.

Stopping a 300mph funny car with no chutes takes real skill on the brakes - and thats when the engine hasn't exploded in front of you and you can see where you are going...
