by dtrally on 22-06-08 12:24 AM Tragically it appears that both parachutes were torched by the fire. Fires like that are usually survivable in drag racing otherwise. I hope as a result they do some research into better parachute materials or longer, flame resistant cables perhaps? |

On Funny cars, brakes on all 4 wheels is already mandatory. However, while front brakes are better than nothing, the tyres are relatively small in width to be able to provide massive stopping power. Also - having worked as a track official in the braking area of a dragstrip before - the big problem I see with braking and drag cars such as funny cars, is a combination of a short wheelbase, no suspension and large 'slicks' on the rear. When the brakes are applied they have a tendency to cause the car to bounce on the rear tyres, and when they are up in the air they aren't doing much to stop the car. Stopping a 300mph funny car with no chutes takes real skill on the brakes - and thats when the engine hasn't exploded in front of you and you can see where you are going... |
