NEWBI need 2 save money on petrol

  Top of Page

Hi Guys, 2 weeks ago i got a 03 lib 2.5rx as my first car, as i am still a student working to pay off the car. Everything thats able to cut off the expensive petrol price would be a very good news for me.
So here is my question:
Part 1: when to shift gears to get the most efficiency out of a N/A RX?
Part 2: when is it shifting too low and will hurt the car?
Part 3: fill up with 91 95 or 98?
Part 4: What item will help boost efficiency of the car, which is cheap and can be easily installed?

Thanks heaps in advance

Don't drive with a heavy foot.
Change before 3k.
If you don't need the spare wheel (ie short trips, partner/parents have 2nd car and come and help you out if needs be), take it out.
Turn the aircon off, drive with the windows down (unless over 90kmh then more fuel efficient to run aircon).
Walk to the corner shop instead of driving.
Get your mates/partner/'rents to give you lift.

Ultimately buy a cheaper to run car. Subarus are not the most fuel efficient.

For anything else, use the search function on the forum.

If you have United/Liberty/Kwik servo's over there give the 98 a try, I'm getting 40-50K's per tank more than I was on BP 98 & the car runs great.

Make sure you have the correct tyre pressure
KEEP YOUR SPARE TYRE IN
Dont flog it, but also dont let the engine labour
and x2 for everything else said...Except the tyre thing...:suicide2:

oh, and for your safety (on the off chance you need the spare) when you check your tyre pressures, check the spare as well  wink

Yeah i saw the 99.9 this morning as well. Which means it still costs $1.10 ish:ohmy: anyway.

Anyway if you want to save on petrol, don't drive a subaru, they may not be as big as commo but they are really quite a heavy car because of the AWD.

just paid 97.9 Per L today big_smile and not that E10 crap either..
My advice, Fill up on Wednesday morning, and don't top up, untill next wednesday morning.
less fuel during the week = less weight and more economy.

also I hear that filling up in the morning is better as the fuel is denser and also dont pull the handle to the max as you pump more air through the meter that way.

its all tiny amounts though. if you are that worried about costs, seriously buy a yaris lol my mate gets like 700+ kms a tank city driving.

in all the time i have owned a car i have never paid under $1 for fuel so this is awesome for me :new_russi $50 for a tank big_smile compared to $80 a month ago when it was at like $1.49.. mate you shouldn't be driving at all if your worried about fuel cost this week!

I just saw Clarkson, Hammond and May do 750miles on a tank. My advice, diesel or hoof it. Remember thats its not what you drive but how you drive it. Remove the rear seats, the front passenger seat, miss meals and keep the tank low and run red lights.

A Subaru is a heavy car and rolls very well....if you can see that you are going to have to stop up ahead take your foot off the little pedal and roll as much as possible in a high gear.  You don't have to be getting in the way of other traffic as the car does not slow quickly at all.

I think the Subaru has a fuel shut-off when coasting in gear, so this should be better then coasting in neutral.

All the distance travelled this way is using little fuel, and a bonus is better brake pad life..

Petrol is still $1.23 here...but that's still the cheapest it's been since I've had my licence (3 & 1/2 years ago).

Yeah, Subarus are thirsty buggers, I just think that's the price you have to pay for having a nice car. smile Sure, you can go drive a Barina or something and get awesome fuel economy, but you'd feel so much better in a Lib. Lol good luck with the fuel saving!

I work a Liberty servo and we buy our petrol from Caltex. I think because most Liberty servos are indepentant it varies which company they get their fuel from. Food for thought.

If you wanna save some petol make sure the engine is running at its best. What kinda consumption are you getting?

If its **** theres a few things u can do to make it run better:
Get a can of UEC from a Subaru dealer
New spark plugs
New ignition leads
New O2 sensor (if its mcrooted)
New air filter
Injector cleaner
Check for any leaks in the intake
New fuel filter

Probably a few more things but those 9 things will give you much better economy if your lacking in that department.

Warm your car up before any long trips (I tend to warm my engine up until it hits 1000 rpm) in doing so the engine will not be running as rich ( will have taken it out of the equivalent of choke) and also the oil will have warmed up to a thicker consitency (making everything slide into position ie: gears). I have an N/A 2.2 but doing this before long trips makes it run better and more fuel efficient.

That and if you have several trips to make in a day try and make them within a certain time frame of each other, the engine will still be warm and thus you will not have to warm it up again.

When I first started driving it was 85 - 90 cents. I could fill my tank with $30 in my old car.
