New site poll: Wide or skinny?

  Top of Page

Need some opinions from those that will be using it:
The theme we've chosen for the new site is a fixed-width format (900px for the technical ones) which will not expand if you make your browser window larger.
While we can make it "fluid" width (ie it will take up the whole screen) it would most likely delay the release by quite a while and mean we couldn't concentrate on other things like speed etc.

The question I'm asking is do you all think it's worth the extra effort, or would you find a fixed-width format acceptable?

what's the current width? as it's far too skinny even for 15" screens.
Fixed suits me but just wider than  it is currently

The new site is 900px wide, which is wider than the current one but only slightly.

Is it not possible to do what RSLib does and just adapt to whatever screen is being used at that time? That is ideal.

I think the fluid width is a lot better.
For myself the main time i use ozlib is at work, and because of the colours it can kind
of stand out if it's full screen.
Can be easier and quicker than alt tab at times big_smile

That's what I mean by fluid width. Yeah it's possible, it just takes a pretty long time to convert the theme from fixed width to fluid.

I'm gonna go with fluid width. I'm using widescreens. I'm gonna like the idea when I go from a 15" laptop screen to a 42" plasma, that the width will follow..

id have to say fluid width, itll be worth the wait and why not apply the car modifying mantra to our site 'do it once, do it properly' will be heaps better, chances are if we do fixed then it'll be changed again later to fluid anyway

the current system (with the SD [fixed] and HD [fluid] buttons) seems to work alright... can we not just stick to the same thing?

or is it not possible to carry over?

Tristan the fixed/fluid buttons are a feature of this theme. To be honest I don't know why you'd want to switch to fixed width when fluid is an option...

the smallest screen i use is my laptop which is 1280 wide, fluid would suit me better but if its going to mean months more waiting then go with what you have got and work it out later

yeh, get the theme running and then sort it out from there...

i think you'd find that 1280x1024 or 1280x800 (laptops) is probably the most popular resolution in this day and age...

having said that, i run 1920x1080 on my 24" at home...

i personally would rather have the screen filled with more forum than blank space, as would be the case on a 1920 wide resolution...
