New Site Feedback

  Top of Page

Hi Admin,

I've got to say that I am really not a fan of the new site layout. The functionality of the site itself is passable, but the layout is really bad. Sorry...

I don't know what happened to the title of this thread, it just disappeared... It was supposed to be called "New Site Feedback". Perhaps a mod or admin could place it in there for me? How does it even let you post or edit a thread without a title being in there? Nice work Beta Testers...

I don't want any of this to be seen as a bitch session or to be bagging out the work you've done, but to be seen as an accurate overview or critique from someone that has working in the IT and online industry for many many years.

The layout is not intuative at all. Was any UI done on this thing at all? Were the Beata testers all smoking crack or did they literally have no idea what to point out as an issue?

A big concern is the title screens, they are way too big and force the user to scroll down considerably to find any information. They take up all of the screen on most monitors! See sample picture:

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k67/seesully/ozlibsample.jpg

Look at all of that black space that is sitting there doing nothing. You could have created a really slick menu up the top there that incorporated the logo and the menu functions. Why so much space? It looks like crap and doesn't create a good browsing experience at all.

The colours also make it difficult to differentiate between quoted and replied to posts. Yes, I've tried the other colour options, but they are just as ordinary.

I know a lot of development has gone into the site, but has much thought gone into layout and how it will actually effect the users?
I hate to bag this thing given the amount of hours that have gone into its deployment, but seriously, after a year of working on it, you'd think that it would be a pretty amazing user experience for us all and would be a remarkable improvement over the old forum layout.

I know some of you are just going to say that I am having a whine and that I don't like change and that I'll get used to it, well those situations in this case are just not accurate. I have built many websites and worked for two of Australia's biggest online businesses so I know how a site should operate and the simple fact of it is that this one is a very clunky, busy, hard to navigate and hard to read.
What ever happened to the old K.I.S.S. theory?

I know that his site was supposed to be a big jump ahead in technology and benefits to the users, but we cannot see any of this and in all honesty, this 'upgrade' has taken you two steps back. Reverting back to the old forum would be considered by many internet experts as an upgrade compared to this.

Mods, Admin, feel free to argue my points if you so choose, I'm sure that you you have a substantial investment to protect. However, I think you will find that the majority of users will agree with me on this one.

No argument here mate, this time the comments are well noted and referenced. We will definitely take it on-board, where were you 3 months ago? Asthetics aside the maner in which the information has been stored and indexed was the main point with this upgrade. With our next step focusing on design and speed.

Firstly thanks for the well thought out and genuinely constructive feedback. I have to ask, why didn't you put your hand up for the pilot? These sorts of suggestions would have been really useful a month or even 2 weeks ago!
The excessively large "white space" up the top is something Rick and I are discussing at this very moment, so expect that to change shortly.

What makes you say the revision is two steps backwards? Any site that takes a large number of hits, especially interactive sites (as opposed to information-only sites), generally have a teething period post-release while bugs are ironed out, layouts are bedded down etc.
Granted, the previous site was more refined, but it had seen 5 years of refining to get that way.

Re: New Site Feedback

I was one of the original Beta testers but someone banned me from the site and therefore was removed as a Beta tester.
After that I had minimal involvement in the site up until recently.

I understand that the site performance will be on the up and up from here on, this much is already apparent and was never a concern for me as I know that moving the information across to new servers and indexing takes time to settle.

In saying that this format is two steps back is in reference to it's current look and feel. If this is something that can be changed with relative ease and if you guys are open to suggestions, then that is great. If you are interested and feel that you can receive value from my input and experience, then I'd be more than happy to to help out in any way possible.

I have to agree in that the layout is a bit backwards, it feels very clunky and a bit all over the place
i don't know what it is but just doesn't flow well at all, and then again something i just noticed now, you need to hover on a user to see their location (showing it in the avatar box was handy)

I had a look around during the beta but then i had never ending log in problems and gave up (slack i know)

Thing is people dont like change, its just the way we are.

With saying that, the features are here now, and that is a huge leap forward.
now that the site is live and users are getting back on im sure there will be more feedback then during beta and there will be huge refinements to the site layout.

I have to agree with most of you there, especially CodeBurn3r.

I just recently registered to this forum, which was probably 2 weeks ago and i was just getting used to the site, which was easily done and navigation was simple.

The new site seems difficult to work around, finding things (posts, etc..) is almost an assignment (to me anyway.)

Again, people dont like change.. this was certainly a big one.

I say, the more simple, the more friendly user.

But other than that you guys have worked well.

Why fix something that isn't broken, I was a Beta tester but couldn't be bothered after a couple of try's at it, I can honesty say this is now the worst forum I'm on as far as navigation or for that matter anything else, too much crap to try foraging through for an old fart like me.........Sorry guys but I think you have taken a massive step backwards.

I'm going to have to agree with all of the above posts in some way or another, even though it has only been like this a couple of days I find myself coming to the site less frequently as I don't really like the way it is set up now...

I also found the old site alot easier to use compared to this one. This one seems to take longer to load and does have the clunky feel to it....

i have noticed there has been a lot less posted since the new site has been up and running, is this a sign people arent liking it? is it posible to run the old site in paralell with the new site?

Re: New Site Feedback

  Top of Page

Yup, I agree with all of the above.

This new forum is a step in the wrong direction. It is slow and cumbersome to use.

For example, to view Todays Posts, I have to hover my mouse over "FORUM" and wait for it to expand a box out. Or to view a members location, I have to hover my mouse over their avatar and wait for a box to expand out again. Its just more work on my part. This forum obviously wasn't designed for user friendliness, but rather visual fanciness.

Furthermore, I don't find the visuals to be particularly good. Its too busy and that orange colour used for all links dominates everything, and not in a good way. It detracts from simply being able to read the forum and use it as a resource.

And whats the SD and HD formats? Why can't it just be one size like most forums? Forums should be able to automatically resize itself to fit to ones monitor. I'd be okay with it except I have to press HD everytime I log on in the morning, which again, is more work for me.

I can't believe everyones passwords, avatars and PM's were lost. That is unusual for a forum transition; that usually doesn't occur. I promised two members I'd PM them when I was ready to sell my rims but now I don't have their details anymore so I don't know what to do. Its hard to view old threads with pictures as the formatting is completely stuffed up. In addition to that, I receieved PM's according to my e-mail but I couldn't find them in my PM box. Instead now I'm getting messages in my junk e-mail folder. This desperately needs to be fixed if people are to begin using the Classifieds section.

Also some of the formatting icons are hard to see because its grey on grey. Thats a fundamental flaw. How could this get past the Beta Team?!

Anyways, with all these issues pointed out, I trust the admin have enough feedback to go and fix this place up.

BTW - I'm glad to report this forum is responding a lot quicker than the initial few days. Seems reasonably quick now smile

Re: New Site Feedback

and what the hell happened to the "my ride" section, i would rather that than having the reviews section, if someone wanted to write a review about a product in the old site they could of just made a thread about it.

yeah was thinking that..i was a beta tester and i like the site, but yes it is quite abit more complicated to use, even for me..and the loading time pisses me off..

need more people active on this new site imo..i find myself checking in here less now to, cos theres just no action, but i guess that may take awhile to take off.

Re: New Site Feedback

Admin,

While I can appreciate the amount of time and effort that went into the new site I find I must agree with most of the above, especially the slow and clunky comments.

Just to add, Im having issues with attaching pics to threads and I cant understand why when you post on a thread you arent automatically subscribed.
It also seems strange that everyones avatar indicates that they are online when in fact they are not.

I also would be happy to go back to old site.
Please accept this as consrtuctive critisism, Im not intending it to be a whinge.

Cheers
J

Re: New Site Feedback

I'd like to atleast thank the guys who did the change. If it was something i paid for i would
be dissapointed.
The only problems i've had are the 'go to first new post button' and generally getting used to
all the new stuff. It will be better once we get used to and bug are ironed out. Clearly few people here realise how complicated making a site like this actually is. Give it a few weeks.
Think of it like a new car, takes time to work out where buttons are and how it goes around
corners.

you know why there might also be less traffic is because if you have the old forum index page saved to your fav's that web address will lead you to the old ozliberty page saying

"OzLiberty will be back online shortly.

You can follow our updates on Twitter, facebook, or via RSS in the meantime"

mods might want to link the new forum page to that old address http://www.ozliberty.com/forums/

Re: New Site Feedback

I'm just wondering whats happened to some of the old threads/links, for example, if a thread was created on the old site and someone posts a link in this thread, linking to another thread on the site. This link doesn't load, it just goes to back to the old site where it says ozlib will be back online shortly.

Just gotta give it time for everything to be swapped over to the new site or has most of these threads/links been lost?

Great work on the site guys, keep it up.
Can we get Top botton that appears under every post? so when we are reading down the pages saves us scrolling back to the very top as its so many posts per page now.... and maybe a wide grey area of the site so the letters are bigger and maybe loose this red as it at times gets hard to read, but otherwise its thumbs up ...

Just in case you are still thinking it is a couple of isolated whingers, chalk me up as another who thinks the new layout and colours are absolutely terrible.  I have been struggling to use it and went looking for a thread to provide feedback.

Jovi ,

What is this red you speak of ? ?  My screen is all greys ? ?

*runs to check options in user cp smile

edit ... found it ... "profile" button between search and messages , then "display" , Select your preferred style = Pyxes is greys with orange  , Darktide is white with red  , Dolium Darkis Blackish with reds ..

Pyxes is the best one wink

Re: New Site Feedback

Hey guys, I am another who prefers the original site.
The main concern with the new site is that it takes quite a while to load pages. Can this be improved at all? I have been trying on a few computers, using explorer and firefox, all seem to be slow.

Other concerns are a lot of wasted space with the size of posts etc increased in size, no myride section (is this coming back?), overall is more dificult to navigate.. but I suppose it is not what we are used to.. give it some time to sink in..
cheers

Re: New Site Feedback

Theres a "SD" and "HD" button on the top right corner. Press HD to get it wider.

Other forums are able to just automatically resize to fit screen but this one makes us do it. Furthermore, it resets itself, so I find myself having to press HD when I log-on in the morning....

I think that feature should go.
