New RX Owner

  Top of Page

Hi all,

We've just picked up our new RX "family" car. Looking forward to getting in an tinkering under the hood, but very happy to have something to throw the baby seat in with our new arrival due some time in the next 14 days!

This car replaces the Mazda 3 MPS (which will be sadly missed), but it definitely wasn't a car built to carry precious cargo comfortably. The other car sitting in our garage is a Mazda Astina SP20.

Looking forward to asking lots of questions when the time comes for it's first DIY service!

Cheers
Jon

haha, "moved up" - I like it!

Not really dedicated to one manufacturer in particular, if it wasn't for the outragious insurance quotes I was getting for a WRX there was a good chance that would have been in the drive over the MPS.

I've got a number of friends with Foresters, my parents just getting one to replace their Liberty, and a few with Libertys. I actually convinced my dad that the Liberty was the way to go, so I'm been interested for a while.

Good to hear! I came from a 626 myself, although it was a POS '84 model so I wouldn't exactly compare it to the MPS
What year RX have you bought?

welcome Jon. i agree with you that children do change the outlook for what sort of car you need. i also had an SP20. theyre a great car. The MPS is nice shame you had to sell, but you cant go wrong with a subaru. plenty of helpful info to be found here. :good:

It's a 2001 in silver with about 80K on the clock.

It came down to a choice of having no money to play with and a very nice car, or having more money and a nice car... I'd much rather get myself a big screen tele in a few months than struggle along for the sake of my wheels. I do miss the car, but the priorities just shifted, besides you can still have loads of fun without all the power in the world.

thats exactly what i did. sold my sp20 for $18000 and bought the lib for $9500. the sp20 was modified alot and was a waste just driving it to work everyday. i still came out with a tidy car and money in the bank.

The other plus is that I'll be happy to tinker with this one without having to worry about voiding warranty or buggering something up! Looks like it will be brakes this weekend, first timer so it should be fun.

When I get some spare time I'll br sprucing it up with a proper clean, clay, light polish and sealant. It's silver so the paint work hides a lot of the problems but it is pretty tidy.

sounds good. get some pics up when its all detailed. silver is the best from a  maintenance point of view. i went from a black family car to a silver one now. no way i'll ever get a dark car again.

Our SP20 is black and it shows up everything! I love the look of a clean black car, but it doesn't stay that way long enough for my liking - not to mention the fact that the tiniest little scratch is glaringly noticable.

New brake pads went in this afternoon, I will get getting parts for other basic maintenance this week with a trip to Dr Subaru to get some more technical niggle sorted.

Thanks Adam. When I get the time to give it a good clean I'll post some pics up, it's looking quite poor at the moment. When doing the brakes today I took the chance to give the wheels a proper clean (front and back) and a tyre finish, it's amazing how even such a simple thing as this can improve the look of the car!

Well I'm part way through the oil change, having replaced the air filter (which was filthy) and the spark plugs. So far so good, it's stacks easier doing oil changes on this car than the SP20, the oil filter is just sooooo accessible!

Of concern is the oil that i found when pulling out one of the plugs. I can't remember if this is "OK", bad or really bad - any advice?

Just letting the sump drain over dinner and then I'll be filling her back up, running through some UEC and fuel system stuff and then to bed!
