New Members a plenty

  Top of Page

After much web browsing and reading many a thread on MRT rally and this site I chose to join up.  It all started when i had to sell my company car ( 03 Ford XR6 Turbo).  First stop the Subaru dealership - test drove new WRX and libertys.
Then drove the B4 - took me by surprise and had to get it. After 1 week of umming and aahring plus reading the threads on this site I picked up the car last week.

Armed with all the info i soaked up from all your experiences I put the Dealership salesman to the test.

I asked:
Q: Can I use just premium 95RON?
A: Yeah no problems wont hurt at all. It's geared up for it

Q: Will I experience any performance issues if the weather is hot? Do I need a waterspray etc etc
A: Not really - not the way you'll drive it

Q: How often should I get this serviced?
A: Every 10K

Q: What about changing the Oil -  every 5K?
A: No need just at 10K

Q: I was looking for a 04-05 GT Liberty - not many around?
A: you wont find them - rare as hen's teeth. Just like your B4.

Interesting.....I really want a nice note coming from the exhaust -  stopped into Midas and asked a few Q.

Had no idea about B4 and had to ring me back.  They finally rang back and told me they haven't done many  (my guess never) it'll cost $2000 from the turbos and $350 for a sport muffler cat back.  I was unimpressed.  on the way home I tdropped into another Midas and was quoted $250 with cat back 3' Cannon with 6' muffler.  I was confused.  Dropped into an independent muffler joint and they quoted me $400 for cat back (as above) and then $3000 for full system.  I asked I didnt want it too loud just a nice sweat humm- he replied did this on a twin turbo WRX and the owner was very happy.:help:

Next stop rims & tyres.  Tried to sell Kumhos for 250 each -  they said Audi's use them so they are good.

Then tried to sell ROH mantis rims.  All fun and games.

Intersted to know your thoughts on these Q & A's  - no doubt they come up time & time again.

well... typical guess-work by the dealership sales team... and the Midas crew by the sounds of it!... :blush2:

For Fuel:
Go to any BP and use ONLY Ultimate 98(its actually written on your fuel cover)

For Exhaust:
Go to Mettams Mufflers in Morley, speak to Pat... If you drop my name(Jimmy) he will look after ya... Very good prices... and they will do whatever you want done!

For Rims:
Go to Tech 9 Tyres in O'connor... Speak to Scott... Huge range of genuine wheels and Tempe Spec stuff... Top bloke and again will look after ya!

Great work/advice.....just what I was after. will be in Morley for work on wednesday so will drop in and say g'day.  Thanks and I will name drop!

I have religiously been filling up with Ultimate  and the guys at subaru  said that premium will be fine no need for the 98 RON.  He was adamant that it was not necessary..... Hmmm bit cautious as I will be having my car serviced by them.

Perhaps they probably stung me for the price I paid for the car too:Dntknw:

Thanks for your advice - you never know i might pop up for a cruise at some point - may have to white lie to the wife!

First off, welcome to the site.

WRT your Q,

Fuel, you will find your own fuel which suits your car and driving. DO NOT USE 95RON - it will not hurt it but the car will drive like a RS - it aint geared up for it and if you do put this fuel in, it will take at least 3 full tanks of 98 to get this back to normal.

Hot weather WILL affect the car and in some case you may hear pinging and the car will feel sluggish after major heat soaking at the lights etc.

Oil change 5K is good.

Exhaust typically, most people go 2.5in of priamry turbo and 3in off secondary then full 3 in all the way to muffler then tip usually 3-4in.
Expect about $2500 for full SS system fitted

RIM, this is again your choice
Tyres once again, your choice, for me P6000 all the way!

Enjoy

IT'S FAR BETTER WHEN THERE'S TWINS INVOLVED

Re: New Members a plenty

As everyone has said, the engine is tuned for 98 ron so that is what you should use, otherwise you'll get issues with the engine pinging. The B4 would have originally been tuned for 100ron in Japan, and then de-tuned for Australia's poor fuel (which is why the Jap spec produces more power). So yes, run 98ron smile

With the servicing, I'm not sure if the B4 has different service schedules or what, but generally Subaru recommend every 12,500kms for servicing.
And as was mentioned, if you're pedantic about your cars, change the oil every 5,000km. The car will live happily waiting between services, but obviously it'd be preferable to do it earlier than that.

Agree with all that has been said only use 98, Only thing.....

I dont do 10,000km in 6mths

So all my services are done on time not Km's, I get a service done every 6mts no matter how many Km's ive done (Usaly around 7000k) and I change the oil my self every 3 months!!

The B4's get very hot under the hood and if you aint using a good oil it will burn it up in no time!

mild steel exhausts have a better sound than SS. use 98 octane, if you've got the money to buy the car you've got the money for the right fuel. change the oil every 5k, service 10-15 or whenever something goes wrong

as alex said, mild steel will give you a better sound as its thicker piping and will have a nice deeper note, rather than a higher pitched sound from stainless.

Sold the Subaru, replaced it with a Honda.. but all I know is Subaru's! (and Holden V8's of course):secret:

Re: New Members a plenty

Get it serviced at Maximum Motorsport in Malaga, Subaru specialists who won't rip you off or try to sell you crap you don't need, speak to Steve, possibly help with your exhaust too, they don't make them but have an exhaust guy that is excellent, go SS.
Pitty you didn't have it a couple of weeks ago, you missed a good cruise............oh & Welcome.

All good advice - I'll keep it in my bag of tricks!

look as though I'm limited to dealership services otherwise i void my warranty.
It also mentions that for turbo engines i have to change every 5k or I void warranty.
Interesting.

Must admit though the car seems a little rough in the morning after a cold night in the shed.  Doesnt take long to warm up  - matbe a km down the road and its almost there.

Hte to think how wuickly it will heat up in summer-  turn key , revers out drive way and there you go - warmed up!

Any way to improve jumpy ride quality until warms up? Or maybe its my clutch control - its' been 7 yrs since had a manual.

Yeah they heat up quickly, mine will be showing running temp within about 2 - 3 k's, but not really any different in the hot weather, just a really efficient cooling system.

It's incredible that the dealership have not pushed me for 98RON yet everyone says it's an absolute must.  Yoou cant miss the warning sign on the fuel lid - it makes me double check the pump twice before I fill her up.

Looking for some rims that are of same weight of BBS and strength.  I cbf'd cleaning them every week.  What price would I get for the BBS? I saw somewhere they are work 4.5K brand new for 17"? Wow that's expensive.

Any ideas - going to stick with 17's due to the cost factor of tyres.

Lots of break dust - is this normal? Soft compound?

you could probably get around $800-$1200 with tyres for the BBS rims... depending on condition and tyre wear...

new 17"s with tyres come from around $1500 and 18"s will be available for virtually the same price... my advice... go 18"s... the cost difference in tyres now is bugger all... they are producing 18" tyres and 17" tyres in almost the same numbers...

If you want to look at some rim options that dont hit the bank balance too hard... go to Tech 9 Tyres in O'connor and speak to Scott... :victory:

In regards to your brake dust, it is probably due to the pads you are using and the way you are driving... probably find they are Bendix ultimate pads... good pad in terms of braking but they are particularly dusty!... just look at changing them to maybe a Ferodo pad once they run out!
