New member with Fuel Guage Problem

  Top of Page

Hello to everyone!

My names Geoff - 38yo father of 8month old Elizabeth, husband of Cath, owner of a 1999 built MY00 Liberty RX Manual sedan - silver bought new in August 1999 and now with about 130,000km on the clock

By trade I am a motor mechanic although I gave that up 10 years ago and am now a partner in a small family business.

NOW sorry to put this in my intro - but.......

My reason for seeking out and joining this forum is I am hoping to get some help with a problem with my Liberty.

About 2 weeks ago the low fuel warning light  came on when I still had about half a tank.  Then a few days later the guage would just drop to DEAD empty then sometimes come back.

My training said simple - fuel guage sender unit BUT On speaking to the local stealer I am told they have TWO senders!  One built into the unit containing the pump and another (main) one.  This to me is WEIRD!!!

They also tell me that there is a notification about some models having a problem almost identical to mine but they wont tell me the solution without running through the entire check (at a cost of $100!).

Can anyone tell me about this "Second" sender unit or advise if they can help in any way?

Love to get some advise ASAP as I would ideally like to solve this problem before I run out of fuel!!

Thanks

Geoff

Welcome!

Yes the gen 3's have two senders, one on the drivers side and the other on the passenger side.

You could try cleaning each of them.

To get access to the senders, remove the rear seat, and lift up the bits of rubber, you should see two access ports.

I hope that helps.

Thank you for your welcome Alexxx.

Thank you for your input also Mickey.  I actually am well familiar with the location of the senders (long story to do with holes in my fuel tank thanks to careless car stereo installers!) but wonder why Subarus have two?

According to the diagram I have seen (I haven't  had the senders out yet) the second sender appears to be a small plastic box - hardly big enough for a actual level sensor so I am assuming it may be the low level warning light switch?

The main sender looks more like the sensors I am familiar with and I am not sure if it is a sealed unit (where you cant actually touch the contacts) but I did read somewhere (may have been this forum) that someone else cleaned their sender so might well be worth a look although in my former life as a mechanic we would normally just replace the unit.

Is there anywhere anyone knows of where I can see wiring diagrams or schematics of the fuel gauge circuit?

Thank you again

I've pulled a couple out of WRX's, (same thing different day)they look pretty much the same as the main sender, it could have something to do with the fact that the tank is almost in two halves & be part of equalising the tank.:Dntknw:
