New Gen 2 Wagon

  Top of Page

Hi guys, new to the forum, been keeping an eye on things here for a couple months now (since i bought my new legacy GT). Lots of useful info to be had round here. Little bit about me, it's my 21st bday in 6 days (the 8th), i just recently became unemployed (bad timing too), hoping to start an apprenticeship at eblens subaru in the next couple months, do freelance DJ work in my free time, love the water, love the snow and i love the sound of twin turbos spooling under the hood of my car. Live up in the belair/blackwood area with my girlfriend, trying to set myself up for life and raise my wagon to be the beast it always wanted to be.

Just got myself into a shiny dark blue 1996 Legacy GT Wagon (TT ej20 etc).... which is unfortunately off the road at the moment with a f*cked crankshaft. Long story short, the previous owner did a couple mods too the car, AGX Shocks, Heavy Duty Clutch, STi Springs, 5 inch cannon, Racing Direct Wheels and an old school HKS Blow off valve. Body needs a bit of love and a whole new paint job and the brake calipers could use replacing as there is a bit of rust in select spots on the car from it living by the beach before it got to me.

UNFORTUNATELY after taking it down to my mates workshop the other day and getting it up on the hoist i discovered both of the engine mounts had snapped clean in half, the engine was supported entirely by the transmission. Anyways i was taking it down towards marion the day after to get a quote on how much it was going to cost me to replace the engine mounts when the car finally gave and the main pully (harmonic balancer i think) sheared of the fron of the engine with the crankshaft dropping to the bottom of the housing behind it. Only doing carpark speeds at the time so hopefully the crankshaft itself is undamaged. Quoted $600 installed for new a new pulley (hopefully a quick cheap fix if the crankshaft isnt to damaged) and about $500 for the engine mounts. Either way, this car is at the begining of a long journey back to factory standard and well beyond (car karma willing).

I've already decided if the crankshaft is shot im going to try and replace it with one thats been shot peened and nitrated. My main goal for now is to bring the entire car up to factory standard (including an engine rebuild of some description as is has done 150,000k's) and then see what i can do about bullet proofing it (mabey even closed deck, sleeved pistions and a stroke to 2.2L) and taking it beyond what the factory envisioned.

Anyhoo, thats just a brief introduction to me, my car and my plans for the time being, if anyone can recommend some reliable experienced professionals to help me work on my car i would appreciate it greatly, also i'd love to cruise with some other subie drivers in adelaide once my cars back on the road. Even with the engine mounts broken etc from the previous owner this wagon still pulls 80-100kmh around every corner on belair road, good times good times.

Welcome, it's normal for the round GTB type mounts to die, just replace them with a set of 2nd hand WRX ones & save yourself $400, easy enough job to do yourself, see if you can get some better quotes for the crank too, pulley is cheap 2nd hand also and provided the key way isn't bashed to death it's a cheap easy fix.
