New from Canberra

  Top of Page

Hi all.
Myself and my GF are looking at getting a MY02 B4. It has 76000 on the clock, but it hasnt been modded and from what I can tell, only been pushed hard a couple of times by the current owner who has only owned it since December (though I dont think he pushed it all that hard, cos he seemed a little nervous when I tested it big_smile).

Im in the process of searching for advice on what to look for, but so far, havn't found there to be many problems with them. Theres always the people saying that all Subarus go bad after 100000 ks, but looked after, they are fine yeh? I was thinking of getting the 100k sevice at 90k to make sure it stays good.

Anyways, this not my first performance car, I also have a Datsun I have been building for race and a Landcruiser Troop carrier for towing.

The main idea for getting the car was that my girlfriend wanted something sporty, but an MX5 or similar just isnt practicle and I wanted her to be driving something with a bit of poke still, but safe, practicle and comfortable. I think this is it. She doesn't like WRXs cos everyone has them and since it will be mostly her car, im happy with it.

So if you have any other advice, please dont hesitate to tell me.

Cheers

Scott

Welcome to the forum mate. Good to see another Canberra member on board.

Not sure how you determine "going bad" after 100k, they might mean that the 100k service is a big one and if you don't do it then you risk things like the timing belt going kaput and then things going bad.

If it looks well cared for and preferably has a service history or receipts for oils etc then it should be fine. Get a roadworthy done on it as part of the sale deal and that will generally pick anything wrong up pre-purchase.

Might catch you at an ACT event some time.

Is this a white B4 (manual, I think) that was for sale in Canberra late last year with about 70,000 km on it?

It had an Ecutek tune and an exhaust on it, from what I remember, and looked very tidy. As much as you can tell from an owner's blurb, it seemed  very well looked after.

Just wondering, as I was considering it myself.

I ended up with an 01 manual, and am very happy with it.

If you get a B4, you must get its ecu looked at, in my opinion, or the detonation can be fatal (to the engine, that is). It also liberates a few, or even many, ponies. You should factor in an extra $1000 on the purchase price for this, or almost double that if you want MRT to do it.

They are great cars, and very involving and rewarding to drive. I think of them as a WRX for grown-ups.

Subarus are strong and solid (once the detonation is sorted on this particular model). I have a Liberty RS still going strong with 250,000 km on it, and many have a lot more km than this.

Good luck with it, if this is the way you decide to go.

Thanks for the replys.  It is dark blue, totally stock standard and from what I have seen so far, hasn't ever been modified.
Ok, so this ECU thing, should I take it to say for example Subaru in Phillip and get them to do their thing there, or is something that is meant to be done through a tuner etc?  Is it a remap or something similar, or just clearing the error codes or similar to that?
Basically, people keep talking about things going wrong with them after they reach around the 100k mark, however, I am much wiser to this and realise it is very dependant on the servicing and especially major service.  My parents had '99 forester and a friend had a similar era impreza, the Forester was fine after the 100k mark having had the service at about 95k so I am told, however my friends Impreza didnt do so well, he was lazy.  It died around the 110k mark...

I hope we do get one and I would be sure to go to events.  Do you guys meet up at all?
I have the same view as you on Libertys, much more appealing.

Thanks again

Hey Scott,
Welcome to the club smile
I've not seen many if any Subaru's have catastrophic timing belt failures with just over 100k on the belt.
If well maintained Subaru's will often do 300k+ on original engine/turbo and gearbox. the key it to have someone that knows subaru's to maintain it (that doesn't mean dealerships).
other than that it should give you years of happy boosting.
We try and have a cruise every 4-6 weeks and dinner meets on occasion.
Kev, are we planning dinner meet soon?

Do you only do performance parts, or do you service these puppys properly too, or could you recomend someone?  I would be keen to find someone who knows them well to do any work, especially the ECU problem.

Mate, Mick can do it all.

I've had 5 liberty's so far and they've all been to Mick for performance and servicing,

He knows his stuff and gives it to you straight.

Yeah mate, whenever anyone wants to I am up for it. Prefer Thursday eve over most others. I'll post something up on the ACT section.
