New Clutch and Flywheel

  Top of Page

Hello fellow Gen 3 Liberty owners, I've owned my 2003 RX Liberty for about 4 months now, it's done about 150,000km on the clock and AFAIK the clutch has never been replaced, no paperwork or receipts stating so. There has been a couple of squealing and grinding incidents here and there but it isn't completely stuffed yet, but I'm starting to think it is time.

Reading through some of these old threads I've seen that the generally accepted thing to do is a single mass flywheel conversion along with a clutch replacement. I've been looking at replacement clutch kits online and the only place I can seem to find any are overseas sellers on Ebay.

After some browsing I reckon this one is the pick of the lot http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/F1-OE-CLUTCH … 396wt_1396 The whole shebang with plate, disc, flywheel and bearings for just a tad over $500 delivered to my door.

What I really want to know is, am I in the right mind thinking I will not have any troubles installing this kit because it suits the 2000 - 2006 Subaru Legacy 2.5L SOHC 4cyl non-turbo and fit straight on? Am I missing anything here? It seems too easy, need some reassurance, thanks!

yeah id hurry up and get that done as i left mine too long and ended up completely blowing it up. not 100% sure if it will fit no problems as its always tricky buying from Ebay. have you ever replaced a clutch kit & flywheel before? its a BIG job. about 6+ hours depending on experience. heavy parts etc. not a bad price though. mine RRP for $900 but got it for $650. i chose to stay with the dual mass flywheel though as it much nicer to drive i find.

Its a big job, 6 hours to do on a hoist. If you get a quote from Subaru, they may be able to tell which clutch your car has. My vin# did not list which clutch I had, so had to pull it out before ordering parts.
Lucky I had the flex type clutch, only $250 plus new spigot bearing & flywheel machine. Subaru make a conversion kit for a reason, the dual mass is a dog. I'm glad you like it.
Even the flex type had 2 different sizes, 225 & 230mm from memory, had to be measured when removed. One thing to remember, drain gearbox oil before you remove it, or oil will end up on floor. Good chance to change g/box oil anyway. Make sure you grease all the release pivot points, as per workshop manual.
Good luck.

I really would not recommend going with an unknown brand like 'F1', particularly ordering from the States where a warranty would be difficult at best.
It might seem like you're saving a few dollars, but if the clutch turns out to be rubbish and disintegrates in 10,000km (yes I've seen it happen) then what's it going to cost to fix again?
Consider ordering Exedy OEM parts locally...

I am aware of the work involved for replacing a clutch and that most of the cost is labour, I would not be game enough to do it on my own. Maybe if I had the proper equipment though, but anyway I rang up the closest Subaru dealership and got a quote of $1700 for them to do a SMF conversion, and $675 was just for Labour, so it still would amount to be quite a fair saving if I did go with the cheap Ebay option which is why it was so enticing.

Beckers, I thought the Liberty range from Gen 3 onwards were fitted with a DMF, I'm no expert so I might be mistaken. I will double check if my car actually does have a DMF. To be honest I kinda assumed it did since the clutch pedal feels SO much heavier to put your foot down on compared to the other manual cars in my family by a large margin and I do doubt it has a SMF in there already.

XoN I think you might've been the final nail in the coffin and knocked some sense into my head. I might just wait and hold off on doing anything potentially regretful and until it really becomes a bigger problem, and wear the higher cost then. An extra $500 for the peace of mind really isn't that bad in the grand scheme of things, cheaping out never pays off.

Probably worth having a chat to some local mechanics there, $1700 is pretty extreme for a clutch change. My local mechanic reckons he can change a Subaru clutch in 2 hours, so Subaru is charging $337.50 per hour?

Yeah it does seem that way XoN, but to be honest I really don't trust these shoddy grease monkeys in my local area and I wouldn't let them touch my car with a 10ft pole. I've dealt with them in the past and in my experience the car always comes out worse than before. I really need to find a mechanic friend that I can trust.

However, the best service I had received was from the Subaru dealer in Fountain Gate, they were absolutely superb. They were very friendly and answered all my questions and concerns in detail, the car actually felt and sounded like it had been re-birthed, kudos to them! It almost, just almost makes their extortionist prices worth it smile

Xon no mechanic can do an AWD subi clutch in 2 hours, in & out !!!
Hey crazy, since you are in Melb, maybe try URD in knoxfield, if he is still there ??
It cost me $560.00 to do my clutch, but I work @ a car dealership, they only charge staff $35.00 p/h, so 6 hours labour plus parts.
My new clutch does feel a bit lighter.

Subaru would be charging $120.00 to $150.00 p/h.
For parts try Makin & Luby Parts in Heidleberg, they always look after me.

Last time I did my car I had the benefit of a hoist, and had the gearbox on the ground in under an hour. I would hope a professional could do it faster than me, especially the monkeys at Subaru doing it every day...

Re: New Clutch and Flywheel

I'm not sure what flywheel I have on my Liberty. It's the very first of the Gen IIIs, from early 1999 (I've checked the VIN against the redbook database and it fits the category that doesn't have a month for 1999 which is why I think it is an early 99 model.

I need to replace my clutch as it is slipping, I have noticed a little bit of shudder, however it isn't major. Thinking that I might have to put it up on a friend's hoist and pull the clutch out, find out the diameter as I've read that some are 225mm and some are 228mm, then also check what flywheel I have. If anybody knows for sure what flywheel the early Gen IIIs came out with as I keep hearing mixed reports, that might be helpful to avoid too much downtime.

In my googling and what not I managed to find this http://totallywholesale.com.au/store.ht … ory_id=201 which they list as being an Exedy OEM clutch kit, which indicates it comes with the bearing and cover also...but the price seems unrealistically low. I'm going to try and contact them...has anybody seen this before or know about the website?

Turns out they borked the details/pricing. I contacted them and we sent a number of emails back and forth and they claimed that "There is a pricing issue with FJK-7115 throughout the system". So then next time I checked the price it had jumped up to $490. I sent them a nice thanks for stuffing me around and no chance I'll use you guys now reply.

Then managed to find a Clutch Industries kit on eBay for cheaps, brand new they claim. Hoping this one is legitimate.
