new car...

..not for me.

For my fiance.

As much as she would love a forester GT with all the fruit (or, *gulp* an XT), our budget doesn't extend that far, unfortunately.

As much as I hate newer cars, It's going to have to be one. And for one that's under $20,000 on the road.

What we prefer is a five door hatch, something with some guts, and not ridiculous to service. Economy would be nice also.

So far, we've looked at the Suzuki Swift S (S pack includes alloys, foggies, and six airbags.)

What else should we be looking at? No Koreans, please. I don't care. No Korean cars.

What else should we be looking at?

Cheers

The Swift is a great car, doubt your fiance would be disappointed with it. Even though you said no Koreans, my girlfriend drives a Hyundai Getz and it's not a bad little car and won Wheels car of the year 2 years back.
The golf diesel isn't bad either. Very quick car going up hills, although I have a feeling it might be a bit over budget.
Of course steer clear of the Barina as it's a Daewoo now. Although your eyes seem to be functioning so I expect you would do so anyway...

Swift S or the 1.5 litre Yaris. Can't go past the toyota for reliability/safety/features/resale.

A Gen 3 RX sedan can be had for almost half of what your spending,Although not new.
but for 20g new the swift would be the go.

Re: new car...

Hmmm Suzuki > Hyundai anyday..... The Getz isnt a bad little car but the Suzuki's are better built. Buuuuuuut.. The Getz is better Optioned then the Suzuki as far as little tricks go but for safety the Suzuki is still better.... both have similar power outputs and weigh similar. The Suzuki is going to hold its value better and be more expensive to buy initially.

Have your money ready & take a day off work, go to pickles auctions & you'll save a small fortune on a 12month old car, pretty sure they come with the remainder of the factory warranty & are usually fleet cars which have generally been well looked after, and remember what you save by buying a 12month old car is what you'll lose in 12months, so you'll be about 12 - 16g better off in a years time. They only go for what a yard is usually willing to pay.....then they add 5g.... watch one online to get an idea of how much you'll save, you can even buy online if you want.

You could keep these wheels and put them on the Gen2
http://forum.gtrydaz.com/showthread.php?t=21351
There are a lot of foresters for sale, especially modded examples. I would expect there is a fair chance some may be very negotiable.
My wifey's Foz is a great car. I highly recommend it. Any problems, and you have a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips to repair anything cheaply. And Alex, you're OK with the spanners aren't you?

I bought a 2005 Magna for my sales rep with 32000k's on it last December for $16K from a dealer. So it was 18 months old. Came with the 5-10 waranty, and they didn't even need to detail it. It was immaculate. In this last 10 months its clocked up 45000k's and is running faultlessly.
I'm really happy with it.

Think about it, goes out & buys a car that's currently worth 20g new for about 12 - 14g from Pickles, in a years time it'll still be worth 11 - 13g on carsales, so he's saved 6 - 8g.
Goes out & buys a new car for 20g, in a years time it's worth 13 - 15g on carsales, loses 5 - 7g
Saves say 7g buying 2nd hand & doesn't lose say 6g in the first year of new car ownership, difference about 13g.......................having trouble getting my head around this but I think that's how it would work out:Dntknw:
I've seen 18month old falcons going for 12g, ..............."over 21thousand dollar loss in that time"

I very much like your thinking d-gen, and I almost forgot about the whole auction aspect in purchasing a vehicle. I appreciate the comment. I forgot to tell you, that the vehicle is only temporary, for 12-24 months.

Suzuki swift is the most likely candidate.

I said no Koreans. No ifs. No buts. Thanks for putting up the suggestion.

Jazz, I would love, but the missus despises it. I think they're ace, and have a great resale value, but the missus says its pus. Its her car, so what she says is final.

We would love a golf, but it'd be stretching the budget.

Missus didn't like the mazda 2 neither. She does however, like the 3.

Any other candidates?

New Ford Fiesta's...
Can get them under $20,000
They dont look too bad, really roomy, the plastics are well made and suit the interior... not sure how much it packs in the power department..
Plus there is the boy racer version so you may be able to pick certain features perhaps a bit more power or bigger alloy's.
That's my 2 cents
