Dealer ships dont buy the cars they lease them till they sell them and are put onto a thing called a floor plan. once are car has been on the floor plan for 12 months they are paid out and become demos . So if you are ordering a car and its coming off the boat they dont need to offer a huge discount to get rid off it,but a car thats been sitting on the floor plan that wont sell would attract a discount to get rid of it.

normally the people that get the best prices are fleet buyers have you tried

there are some places that get fleet prices for private buyers for a fee

I shopped the exact same car at 3 Perth dealerships in Feb. MY08 GT spec B manual wagon. I got the same story that was bordering on arrogance. I had cash, knew what I wanted, didn't need a test drive, cup of coffee, pat on the back etc. and couldn't get anything off list price. The deal was there for anyone wanting to knock a bit off list but it went nowhere. I got told all kinds of bullsh1t storys about demand and lack of supply etc. Was told "that's the price, wait 4 months, take it or leave it". In the end I bought a MY08 with 7000km at auction in Sydney for substantially less.
Sadly it seems that it's not all that uncommon amongst subaru dealers to have this attitude.
In contrast, I bought my wife a new Prado a fortnight ago, got 8 grand off list, free towbar and mats and it took 1/2 hour of no nonsense negotiating. Toyota actually wanted to sell me a car, that was the difference.

I would like to add that Hamish Brader at Docklands Subaru was possibly the most helpfull and professional car salesman I've ever met. He was the only one of numerous who actually followed up on several occasions, listened to what I wanted and tried to find me the right car without telling lies.
