is the upgrade worth the money, if so what will it do.

($380) AMD AM2 X2 Dual Core 5400+

($420) AMD AM2 X2 Dual Core 6000+

($400) AMD AM2 X3 Triple Core 8450 +

difference between the double and triple???

No, the current AMD solution is poo. The original A64 series (like what I have on my system) from ~3 years ago is a bargin and really fast compaired to the ofering from Intel (The p4 "prescott"). Now Intel have the "core" series of CPU which are much cheaper and a lot faster than the AMD offering. Also, Intel will be releasing their next line of CPU's very soon (nahelam) which will be zomg fast, but prolly not all that cheap

Double and tripple - amount of cores or CPU's on the package. I dont think they bother with single core CPU's these days. Its all about density. More CPUs=more things at once, not faster, unless the application is SMP aware

Some of the newer games are Multi-Core aware... Hmmmmmm I love multicore.

But IMHO Intel >> AMD ATM. <- That being said it's always a moving target.

what is this like

http://www.officeworks.com.au/technolog … 27KT.shtml

Can it fit 3gb DDR ram?

does this and the other slime line dell pc's allow for upgrade of ram and graphic cards?

sure, a handfull are now days, but I have tested this (with my aging system)

Disabling the games ability to use multiCPU (if possible) didn't drop that much performance, however with the switch to desnity being the all mighty king these days, it wont take long until the industry* switches.. But in saying that, its been what... almost 4 years since the first "dual core" CPU came out ? HURRY UP CODERS!!!

Also, a half decent vid card (g92 based min) alows you to keep playing the latest and greatest for about 18 months longer than you *should* be able to.. Water cooling the system helps a bit .. I mean, no I didn't void my warrenty by OC'ing hehe

Hamish - Just go to a comp store and say "Mate, this is what I have, make it better, keep it under xxxx. ta. Oh, some blokes I know say intel is better ?? yeah ??" Unless they're dodgy f****rs, they'll look after you.

* and I mean, app writers, game dev's etc etc etc

stay away from your dell, hp, compac etc's. All over priced and use crap components. A $2000 dell system has the same components as a $900 (or less) system from a normal comp shop.

yeah - mine does (well did, I dont like it)

if you can budget ~1200, you will get a 1/2 wya decent core2duo (e8400 or what ever the current 45nm CPU is - can't recall), good mobo, 2+gb ram, 500-1tb+gb hdd space, dvd supermulti drive, case, 22" LCD (vista looks nice on wide screen) and software and a nice video card. You'll be set for quite some time.

... dang, I wish my system was that well spec'd

Get this little animal, well worth it and a good overclocker. Run your O/S in 64bit mode with this cpu.
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/pro … s_id=34835

Like Richo said the original A64 series was king in it's day, I'm running AMD 4000X2 overclocked and it's a peach, but I'm a AMD fan, hate intel.

If u want a good system try Alienware, well worth the extra $$, top workmanship. http://www.alienware.com.au/dnn2/
I build custom comps as a side gig, if u were in Melb easy done and cheap when u build ur own.

*prepares for flaming* I bought an Aldi PC about 18 months ago and only recently upgraded the video card to cope with some of the newer games I play. Never had an issue with it and they aren't a bad price for a plug and play unit. Quite a few tech heads at my previous workplace had them as well and could not fault them.

The main bugger (well, my gripe) is that they have a port for a removable/portable hard drive but they have never had them for sale ! Minor issue in the big scheme of things really. Given you aren't a big PC head then it could be an option

Some of the guys here have purchased these and use them as media servers and they all seem to say they're ok.

Re: need help Computer experts..

well i have the X2 6000+ and i can count for it, i bought it back when i was going my 2year comp systems engineering diploma and in all honesty while everyone was going for uber pricy core 2 duo's my X2 6000 is still able to play anything i throw at it. im not saying get it or anything just saying its definantly morew than enough for a average user.. encodes movies nice and quick

I used to build systems as a part time cash job while at tafe and got sick of the Intel vs AMD war when the core 2 duo's first came out so i built  one system with the x2 6000 and the c2d E6600 and i think after running encodes of movies as a bench mark there was like a 1 minute difference between them, the intel chip was of course cooler but the AMD was able to still cope with multitasking a bit better while the 2 systems were encoding.
probably because the AMD has faster memory access than the intel chip.

in all honest what made me chose to buy AMD is the path of upgrades is easier.
history shows intel change socket almost yearly.
AMD on the otherhand have a habit of sticking to a socket configuration for a LOT longer time.

in the case of AMD currently the AM2 cpu's are compatible with AM3 (the new configuration AMD will be adopting soon)
and also AM3 is compatible with AM2
the only thing that may cause issues is buying a AM3 motherboard that only has DDR3 on it as the AM2 don't have a memory controller capable of using DDR3

so my upgrade plan was laid out back when i started my new system to run from a AM2 setup with DDR2 then change up to a AM3 cpu when they are much better than current gen chips, then afterwards buying into a AM3 motherboard and some DDR3 ram a bit after to keep my upgrade costs down.

This was my reasoning for going the AMD AM2 X2 6000+
i want the best possible but at the lowest outlay (all you students know the feeling of living by fortnightly centrewank payments)  lol

As far as I'm concerned, Acer suck. I work in a school and we were using Acer laptops and desktops, brand new SK50 desktops at the start of last year, we had about 15 DOAs out of a few hundred machines, plus many many failures since then.
This year we got HP desktops and we've only had two or three problems with these in total. Way more reliable than the Acers!
